Believe me, we do have great Hip Hop & culture today in 2017. Anything that isn't good like that, or doesn't give you that feeling, isn't hip Hop! I listen to a radio show called Hip Hop Philosophy radio, and he spends the week collating amazing NEW hip hop & playing it for a few hours on a Monday, it's called Monday Night Fresh. I love that Stretch & Bobbito doco too. I first fell in love with Hip hop here in New Zealand listening to mixtapes by DJ's. That was the only way I could hear good music coming from the states. I first heard a mixtape by DJ Reminise, and on that was a song by Nice & Smooth called "Sometimes I rhyme Slow" I think that was the first hip Hop song I learnt all the words to. We had Hip Hop summits here in the early 2000's too which further confirmed my love for Hip Hop. It's one of those most beautiful yet misunderstood cultures. You either have it or you don't. Some good new artists & groups releasing good music today that I like are, Mello Soul Black, Last Jazz Club, Insight The truncator, Jess The Facts. Here is the mixcloud for Hip hop Philosophy Radio with all their shows on. Great post thank you! I love Hip Hop <3

I was born in a LP shop ;)
Sort of.
It was my second home because my father owned it so I was born with music in my blood.
I grew up listening to all genres of music which I am deeply grateful for.
I have a huge love for old soul and rnb.
There is something about the rich caramel voices and beautiful melodies that just pull on my heartstrings and make me feel all warm and gooey inside.
I think this stems from that basically when I was 7, my mum kinda took me away ( in theory, she kidnapped me but to me it didn't feel that way ) and we just started driving. For 7 weeks straight.
And it is on that magnificent journey, we listened to a lot of cassettes that had old soul and rnb.
So I guess what I am saying is, it reminds me of a time where we were completely free, living like nomads in our car and sleeping in a tent, and had escaped the cold and we were in the sun.
Ultimate bliss!!
❤️

hee hee... "I was born in a LP shop..." what an intro.

mmm... the old soul and R&B, rich caramel voices, beautiful melodies pulling on heartstrings, warm and gooey... damn girl, I can feel the magic coming through your words!

awesomeness.

Great insightful post @rok-sivante. I love your questions at the end. I am an active musician so there is a lot of music that has helped define me as an artist and a person. I would have to say Experimental music has had the biggest impact. This has taught me to be free from limitations of other styles. There was no wrong or right. Love it!!!!!!

Sounds are very powerful and I think most of us have either songs, bands or genres that have influenced us in some profound way.

I can literally hear certain songs or bands and I feel the exact same feelings and experiences as I was going through in that point in my life, like a time machine. Its very powerful.

I don't really listen to music any more and haven't for quite some years, but when I hear certain songs its still the exact same, timeless.

Loved that photo of DJ bruce lee btw.

For me, it was the sound behind so much of the underground music coming out from both sides of the Atlantic in the early 80's.

And those sounds were produced by the legendary Roland TR-808 and TB-303. They completely changed the musical landscape from which there is no going back.

Another enormous influence was the Amem break, a 4 bar drum sample taken off the 1960's funk band The Winston's tune, 'Amem Brother.' Breakbeat, Hip-hop, DnB, Jungle have used this break so much it's ubiquitous with all these genres, albeit at different speeds.

Check out the break here at 3 speeds

These 3 things (808, 303, and the Amem break) gave rise to so much that I love! 😜 Amem!

This is some nice hip hop aswell enjoy!

Well, for me it was classic music, the beatles, the beegees, James Brown, ABBA, John Lennon, Micheal Jackson and those golden oldies my grandparents were listing to every sunday morning earlier than you would like... That definitely left a huge timeless imprint.

When we first arrived here when I was 7 years old, I got hooked on heavy metal, at the same time being pulled between classic and rap music while growing up. Can you picture this? Me wearing a AC/DC t-shirt with sneakers loved by rappers, carrying a mini boombox with Mozart kickin out of the speakers?

A great shift took place I think somewhere in the late 80's when Run DMC and Aerosmith came out with a remake of "Walk this way". Then came along "Pump up the volume" from a group name MARRS. House music was added to my growing collection of audiocassettes :) So yeah, on the dancefloor at some parties you had to switch from being ghetto fabulous to being a headbanger or a Euro dude wearing a training suite ...LOL

As you see my inspirations came in many forms and at different times in my life but if I must choose one it would definitely be classic music first and heavy metal second and rap third.

Classic music, metal and rap calm me down. My "goto" whenever I wish to turn off the world around me.
Too many why's but it boils down to one thing... Anything that sounds good and makes you feel good...is good...even if it's bad :)

Thanks for taking me back into time for the past few minutes!

Lol. That is quite the visual!

And interesting that heavy metal still calms you.

Your welcome. :-)
