Giving Steemit One Language

or “Steem Translate”

Greetings Steemit-Community! Before getting into my actual thread I would like to quickly introduce myself. Not only for the sake of this post but because this is going to be my first ever entry on Steemit and because I want to connect with the community as I hope to stay around for quite some time.

My name is Leif and I’m a 20-year-old student from Northern Germany. Currently I’m studying Social-Science with an emphasis on politics and economy, looking to possibly combine those subjects in the future to work as an economic lobbyist or similar. I have been following the topic of Bitcoin and other Cryptos since early 2013, but have only gotten invested into it within the last couple of weeks. Personally I think that Crypto currencies hold great potential to become a lot more popular within the years to come and I’m sure that I will grow older, seeing Bitcoin and such become an everyday thing for most people on earth.

At the time of writing this text I have found out about Steemit only a couple of days ago but immediately fell in love with the concept of a social network based around Crypto, gathering people from all over the world who are looking to get involved with the topic.

At this point I would already like to get to the actual topic of my posting.  Scrolling through Steemit and checking out the new content over the past couple of days I have noticed the trend of me skipping through a bunch of highly voted posts written in foreign languages (mostly Chinese and Spanish) as they, even though the content might have been great and much to my interest, did not hold any value for me as I was not able to understand what they were saying. Some of those posts have been translated very informally at least, but most of them were plain useless to me. When checking out the “Tags and Topics” bar to the right of Steemits front-page I could see a continuation of the same trend, where posts would have been categorized under tags such as “German”, or “Spanish”.

Before I continue please let me state my view onto this trend as I don’t want anyone to feel offended by my post. I think it is completely fine that people create content in their native language and about national or even regional topics. A social website like Steemit lives off of that sort of content just as much as it does off of highly trending international content for a large viewership.

But while I feel like that content does most certainly have a right to exist, I also feel like the people that use Steemit, which are the same people that want to enable fast and fee-less international transactions, internationally combined super-computing and easy world-wide communication through Cryptos, would be very interested in what the Chinese think about their AntShares conference, what the Russians think about the current trends of Bitcoin and Ethereum or would just like to understand the VLOG of a girl from Spain. And most importantly I believe that every person on Steemit should be able to access all the information that is being uploaded to the platform.

Now while we all know that copying a Chinese 5000-word text about a Crypto conference into Google-Translate won’t really help you gather any useful information at all and while we all know that it is unrealistic to expect every user to translate their post into 6 languages before uploading, I still believe it to be very possible to make most information on Steem accessible to everybody.

It certainly is a community effort to do so but let me try to explain by introducing a very successful take on this topic by name related game-platform Steam. Steam very much like Steemit also provides a community platform for their 125-million users allowing for uploads concerning mostly gaming, coding, modding and other topics. In 2010 Steam launched a translation program called “Steam Translation Server”, which allows for every user on Steam to participate by verifying their translation skills through a number of tests and eventually help translate the platform into their language under the supervision of a few selected Mods.

I could most likely write a 10-page article about Steam Translation Server but instead will just show up some of the key features, which the idea is built around:

• Every at least bi-lingual user can participate after verifying their translation skills through a number of test translations.
• New translators are only given a small number of easy to translate texts, before the quality and quantity of texts are gradually being increased as the translator becomes more experienced.
• All submitted translations for a single text are being reviewed by a number of mods before they will choose the best translation, which makes its appearance on Steam.
• Very active and trusted translators can become mods themselves to support the increasing number of new translators. 
• Translators of Steam are mostly used to translate texts concerning the platform itself but have lately also been requested by game developers and content creators in the community hub, making most of the content accessible for people from all over the world.

At the end of my post I will leave a link for anyone interested in further information about this take on community based translation.

While I wish I had the perfect idea on how to implement this system into Steemit (which I don’t) I also think that it could be a lot of fun to create something like this together as a community, seeing how it develops from a bare plan into something that will – hopefully - help make this platform so much better for everyone.

Wouldn’t it be great, if every person that has something to share would be able to share it with everyone? And wouldn’t it be incredible to have almost completely (language-) barrier-free website? All it takes for that is the people that are already there, and the skills that those people already have. Everyone who would like to create great content for the community could just request translations for their post and it would be accessible for everyone on Steemit.

I hope some of you have managed to follow my narrative to this point and feel like they can relate to some of the points that I have mentioned. It takes a lot of people to do something like this but it should definitely be worth it in the end. I’m really looking forward to discussing this with you guys, hearing other people’s opinions and ideas on this, and potentially working something out as a community.

I believe we can make Steemit even better and pave the way for a truly international community. I will add a German translation to this and would be greatly appreciative of any further translations in the comments as I feel that my personal French and Spanish skills aren’t on a level that would allow me to translate this text to the understanding of anyone.

As this is my first post on Steemit and I don’t really know how the monetization process works I would like to say that upvotes obviously are greatly appreciated to raise awareness of this topic but I would like to state that I do not expect anyone to give me any money for this post. I genuinely want to improve Steemit and seek my reward in achieving that. However to make any monetization as transparent as possible I’d like to mention that I will use the 50/50 setting on this post as I’m not aware of the effects of the 0% and 100% settings.

Sehr geehrte Steemit-Community,

Bevor ich mit meinem eigentlichen Post anfange würde ich mir gerne die Zeit nehmen mich kurz vorzustellen. Nicht nur im Zusammenhang dieses Posts sondern auch weil dies mein erster Beitrag auf Steemit ist und ich die Community gerne näher kennen lernen möchte, da ich vorhabe noch einige Zeit auf Steemit zu verbringen.

Mein Name ist Leif und ich bin ein 20-Jahre alter Student aus dem Norden Deutschlands. Aktuell studiere ich Sozialwissenschaften mit einem Schwerpunkt in den Bereichen Wirtschaft und Politik, da ich diese Gebiete in der Zukunft gerne vereinen möchte um als Lobbyist für Wirtschaftsunternehmen oder einer ähnlichen Position tätig zu werden. Seit 2013 beschäftige ich mich mit dem Thema Bitcoin und anderen Krypto-Währungen, bin aber erst in den letzten Wochen auch finanziell aktiv geworden. Ich persönlich glaube, dass Krypto-Währungen ein enormes Potential haben in der Zukunft großes Aufsehen zu erregen und bin mir sicher, dass ich miterleben werde wie Bitcoin etc. zum Alltagsgegenstand für die meisten Menschen werden.

Zu dem Zeitpunkt meines Schreibens habe ich erst vor wenigen Tagen von Steemit erfahren, war von dem Konzept eines Sozialen-Netzwerks für Krypto-Interessierte aus aller Welt aber direkt begeistert.

An diesem Punkt würde ich gerne zu dem eigentlichen Thema meines Beitrages kommen. Während ich die letzten Tage durch den neuen Content auf Steemit geschaut habe ist mir aufgefallen, dass ich leider einige aufsteigende Posts überspringen musste weil sie in Sprachen wie Chinesisch oder Spanisch verfasst waren. Und obwohl der Inhalt dieser Posts bestimmt interessant für mich gewesen wäre, konnte ich ihnen leider keine Informationen entnehmen da ich den Sprachen in welchen sie verfasst wurden nicht mächtig bin. Einige der Beiträge wurden zwar sehr informell übersetzt aber die meisten hatten leider keinen Nutzen für mich. Auf der Frontpage von Steemit ist mir derselbe Trend in den Tags aufgefallen, wo Beiträge in Kategorien wie „German“ oder „Spanish“ eingeordnet wurden.

Bevor ich fortfahre würde ich gerne meine Meinung zu diesem Trend darstellen, damit sich niemand von meinem Post angegriffen fühlt. Ich finde es absolut in Ordnung, dass Personen ihre Beiträge in ihrer eigenen Sprache und über nationale oder sogar regionale Themen verfassen. Eine Webseite wie Steemit lebt von diesen Beiträgen genauso wie sie von großen Posts mit einem internationalen Publikum lebt.

Aber während ich glaube, dass diese Art von Beiträgen definitiv eine Existenzberechtigung hat, glaube ich ebenfalls, dass die Personen die Steemit benutzen, welche dieselben Personen sind die über Krypto-Währungen internationale und steuerfreie Transaktionen, internationales super-computing und einfache internationale Kommunikation ermöglichen wollen, auch daran interessiert wären zu erfahren, was die Chinesen über ihre AntShares-Konferenz denken, was die Russen über den aktuellen Trend von Bitcoin und Ethereum halten oder einfach nur den Reisebeitrag einer Frau aus Spanien verstehen zu wollen. Und vor allem glaube ich, dass jede Person auf Steemit die Möglichkeit haben sollte auf eine für sie verständliche Form des hochgeladenen Contents zugreifen zu können.

Und obwohl wir Alle wissen, dass der Versuch einen 5000-Worte Text über eine Krypto-Währungskonferenz bei Google Übersetzer einzugeben relativ erfolglos bleiben wir. Und obwohl wir Alle wissen, dass es unrealistisch ist von jedem Uploader zu erwarten, dass er seinen Beitrag in 6 Sprachen übersetzt, glaube ich dennoch, dass es sehr wohl möglich ist die meisten Informationen auf Steemit für alle Benutzer zugänglich zu machen.

Es ist definitiv eine Gemeinschaftsbemühung so etwas zu erreichen, aber möglicherweise kann ich es anhand des Ansatzes der namensverwandten Gaming-Plattform Steam etwas besser erläutern. Steam bietet seinen 125-millionen Benutzern, ähnlich wie Steemit ein Communityhub für Beiträge in den Bereichen Gaming, Coding und Modding (und vielen weiteren). 2010 hat Steam das Übersetzungsprogramm „Steam Translation Server“ gestartet. An welchem jeder Steam-Nutzer teilhaben kann, indem er seine Übersetzerfähigkeiten in einer Reihe von Testübersetzungen bestätigen lässt um die Plattform anschließend, unter der Kontrolle einiger Moderatoren, in seine Muttersprache zu übersetzen.

Ich könnte wahrscheinlich einen 10-seitigen Artikel über „Steam Translation Server“ verfassen, werde es aber bei einigen Schlüsselaspekten belassen, auf welchen das Programm aufgebaut ist:

• Jeder zumindest Bi-Linguale Nutzer kann teilnehmen, nachdem er seine Übersetzerfähigkeiten anhand einer Reihe von Testübersetzungen bewiesen hat.
• Neue Übersetzer erhalten zunächst nur wenige, leichte Übersetzungen bevor die Schwierigkeit und Anzahl der Texte mit der Zeit erhöht wird. 
• Alle eingereichten Übersetzungen für einen Text werden von einer bestimmten Anzahl an Moderatoren auf die beste Übersetzung überprüft, welche letztendlich genutzt wird.
• Sehr aktive und vertrauenswürdige Übersetzer können selbst zu Moderatoren werden um die größer werdende Anzahl von Übersetzern zu unterstützen.
• Die Übersetzer von Steam wurden größtenteils für Übersetzungen der Plattform selber eingesetzt, sind in letzter Zeit aber auch von Spieleentwicklern und Personen aus der Community eingesetzt worden um möglichst viele Inhalte für Nutzer aus der ganzen Welt zugänglich und verständlich zu machen.

Am Ende meines Beitrages werde ich die Website vom Steam Translation Server verlinken, falls jemand an weiteren Informationen interessiert ist.

Obwohl ich gerne den perfekten Plan zur Implementierung einer Community basierten Übersetzung für Steemit hätte (welchen ich nicht habe). Denke ich auch, dass es viel Spaß machen würde so etwas gemeinsam als Community zu entwickeln, und dabei zu zusehen wie sich dieser grobe Plan in etwas entwickelt was Steemit in Zukunft hoffentlich noch besser machen kann.

Wäre es nicht großartig, wenn jede Person die etwas zu teilen hat, dies mit jeder Person auf der Plattform tun könnte? Und wäre es nicht etwas Besonderes eine beinahe Sprachbarriere-freie Website zu haben? Alles was wir dafür benötigen sind die Leute die bereits heute in der Community sind, und die Fähigkeiten, welche diese Leute bereits besitzen. Jeder der Content für die Community erstellen möchte, könnte einfach eine Übersetzung beantragen, und der Beitrag wäre für Alle verständlich.

Ich hoffe, dass es einige bis zu diesem Punkt in meinem Beitrag geschafft haben, und sich mit einigen der von mir genannten Aspekte identifizieren können. Es braucht eine Menge Leute um so etwas zu erreichen, aber das Ergebnis sollte es definitiv wert sein. Ich freue mich darauf, mit euch zu diskutieren und eure Meinungen und Ideen zu dem Thema zu hören. Ich glaube wir können als Community etwas Tolles erreichen.

Da dies mein Erster Beitrag auf Steemit ist und ich nicht wirklich weiß wie die Monetarisierung funktioniert würde ich gerne anmerken, dass ich mich natürlich über jegliche Upvotes freue um dem Beitrag mehr Gewicht zukommen zu lassen. Ich erwarte aber nicht, dass ich für meinen Beitrag auf andere Weise entlohnt werde als die Community zu verbessern. Um aber mögliche Monetarisierung transparent zu machen würde ich gerne anmerken, dass ich die 50/50 Einstellung nutzen werde.
