Do you postedit your images or are they pure as they came out of the camera?

This question belongs probably to one of the most controversial topics in photography moreover since the digital era has come.

There is no image that comes out of the camera as a perfect reproduction of nature. It is just another way of mapping the world like the human eye which also has an optical apparatus with a lens and a retina and a processing unit in the brain.

In the camera the light is captured through the lens, which determines how the motif is reduced to the photo sensor or the analogue film.

In the analogue case the choice of the film and the developement process determine the result of the photoprint. In digital photography it is the sensor technology as well as the image processing and the output medium.

Bearbeitest du deine Bilder oder bleiben sie so wie sie aus der Kamera kommen?

Diese Frage gehört wahrscheinlich zu einem der umstrittensten Themen in der Fotografie, vorallem seit dem digitalen Zeitalter.

Es gibt kein Bild, das als perfekte Wiedergabe der Natur aus der Kamera kommt. Es ist nur eine weitere Möglichkeit, die Welt abzubilden, wie das menschliche Auge das auch einen optischen Apparat mit einer Linse und einer Netzhaut und ein Sehzentrum im Gehirn hat.

In der Kamera wird das Licht durch das Objektiv eingefangen, das bestimmt, wie das Motiv auf den Fotosensor oder den analogen Film trifft.

Im analogen Fall bestimmen die Wahl des Films und der Entwicklungsprozess das Ergebnis des Fotodrucks. In der digitalen Fotografie sind der Sensor, die Signalverarbeitung und das Ausgabemedium entscheidend.

RAW or JPEG?

Die entscheidende Weichenstellung beim Drücken des Auslösers ist: Speichert die Kamera das Foto im JPEG Format oder als RAW Bild?

Um die Tragweite dieser Entscheidung zu verstehen müssen wir uns zuerst den Aufbau des Photosensors ansehen.

In fast allen digitalen Kameras werden Sensoren verbaut, die pro Pixel nur eine Farbe - rot, grün oder blau - auslesen können. Das bedeutet, dass jeweils die anderen beiden Farben aus den umliegenden Pixel interpoliert werden müssen.

In order to understand the implications of this decision, we must first look at the structure of the photo sensor.

Almost all digital cameras use sensors that can only read one color per pixel - red, green or blue. This means that the other two colors must be interpolated from the surrounding pixels.

JPEG

If the interpretation of the data is performed in the camera and written into a JPEG format, there is not much room for post-processing afterwards, since the JPEG format greatly reduces the information. For example, similar colors are combined and converted into gradients and mostly the colors are reduced to 256 tones (8 bit) per channel (RGB).

If the photo looks good, everything is good, but if you want to capture a certain mood, you have to rely on the ready-made profiles of the camera manufacturers. Everyone has their own way of interpreting image information and with the help of artificial intelligence the automatic post-processing has made another big leap forward.

In plain language, this means that every image is processed. The only question is whether you want to decide for yourself how this happens or whether you are happy with the result of the camera.

Wenn die Interpretation der Daten in der Kamera durchgeführt wird und in ein JPEG Format geschrieben wird, bleibt im Nachhinein nicht mehr viel Spielraum für Nachbearbeitung, da im JPEG Format die Infomration sehr stark reduziert wird. Beispielsweise werden ähnliche Farben zusammengefasst und in Verläufe umgewandelt und meistens werden die Farben auf 256 Farbtöne (8 bit) pro Kanal (RGB) reduziert.

Wenn das Foto gut aussieht ist alles gut, aber wenn man eine bestimmte Stimmung einfangen will, ist man auf die vorgefertigten Profile der Kamerahersteller angewiesen. Jeder hat eine eigene Art Bildinformation zu interpretieren und mithilfe künstlicher Intelligenz hat die automatische Nachbearbeitung nochmal einen großen Entwicklungssprung gemacht.

Das heisst im Klartext, dass jedes Bild bearbeitet wird. Die Frage ist nur ob man selbst bestimmen will, wie das passiert oder ob man mit dem Ergebnis der Kamera glücklich ist.

In den Anfangszeiten mit meiner DSLR habe ich noch JPEGs fotografiert. Als Beispiel habe ich bei diesem Bild versucht, den Himmel etwas abzudunkeln um die Wolken und die Textur deutlicher zu machen. Im rechten oberen Bereich kann man deutlich sehen, dass aufgrund des Gegenlichts der Sonne keine Zeichnung mehr vorhanden ist.

In the early days with my DSLR I still photographed JPEGs. As an example I tried to darken the sky a bit to make the clouds and the texture clearer. In the upper right area you can clearly see that due to the backlight of the sun there is no drawing left.

RAW

Raw means that all data as recorded by the sensor remains stored. This means, especially with the large full format cameras, that a wider range of colors and brightness levels are available, which can be accessed afterwards.

When I take photos, I see a certain aspect or atmosphere that I can clearly bring out through post-processing. Raw means more freedom in this respect.

In the next phototechblog, I will show an example of the enormous variety that post-processing a raw image allows.

Raw bedeutet, dass alle Daten, so wie sie vom Sensor aufgenommen werden, gespeichert bleiben. Das bedeutet vorallem bei den großen Vollformat Kameras, dass eine größere Bandbreite an Farben und Helligkeitsstufen zur Verfügung stehen, auf die man im Nachhinein zugreifen kann.

Wenn ich Fotos mache, sehe ich einen bestimmten Aspekt oder eine besondere Atmosphäre, die ich durch Nachbearbeitung deutlich herausarbeiten kann. Raw bedeutet in dieser Hinsicht mehr Freiheit.

Ich werde im nächsten phototechblog ein Beispiel für die ungeheure Vielfalt, die die Nachbearbeitung eines Raw Bildes zulässt zeigen.
