Silently welcoming new Steemians

I do not recall the exact date when I started but I have been silently curating the #introduceyourself tag for some time now. I say silently because unless you check the upvoters then no one will know that I have been into almost all of the posts that I curate. I understand it matters much to engage but I rarely leave a comment lately. Real life duties are taking most of my time so yes, I have my excuses that I can no longer engage like I used to. Beat me!

I will not be able to sustain the conversation for all if I leave a comment on every post that I curate and I think that is not fair to start a conversation then not reply at all so I'd rather be quiet. However, I do not stop my curation with my upvote because upvote is not the same as curation. Instead, I recommend the posts to @c-squared through the Discord channel for the top curators' further curation. I thought of it as my way of welcoming new Steemians even if I do not engage much and just curate on the background. Also, it will certainly help to give more exposure to the newbies.

I also curate other tags but the #introduceyourself tag takes more of my curating time. That is because I know how frustrating it can be when you are a newbie and nobody welcomes you. More so if you spent a lot of time and effort in preparing your post and you see this:

What's worse? The five comments are spam from either bots or non-bot accounts that are "marketing" their own agenda. It is overwhelming to see many "marketing" comments on newbie posts and not leaving a sensible comment related to the post itself. While the "marketing" comments are sometimes helpful, just copying and pasting it from one post to another without commenting something specific to the main post is spamming. I hope the newbies will find those "marketing" comments useful.

I do not keep a list of those whom I curate but let us have a quick preview of the following that came to mind at the moment.

These photos were taken from the respective introductory posts below.

@sinikka
She is a biotechnologist who left her office job to be a freelancer. To her, being a freelancer is an opportunity to gather experience and knowledge about several fields. Go check her post if you wanna know her secret to such wandering career.

@kepi
In the beginning, there was promising project. Things turned out sour but @kepi is still heading for an adventure. I had a short conversation with this guy and I admire the simplicity. Go check how he planned his adventure.

@merlotmama
In her introduction post, Melyssa mentioned that she is from Canada and is soon-to-be mom. She plans to talk about her motherhood on Steemit which she found out through her boyfriend. For mothers or expectant mothers out there, you have a new Steem pal.

@nandy4eva
Ana shares what's with her name that she really researched about it. She also talked about the lost of her father and how she is faking fearlessness to be fearless. For those who are fighting the same challenge, you may want to check how Ana is doing it.

@g-shot
I am envious of The Wave photos on his introductory post. The place looks so magnificent that I thought @g-shot is very lucky have been there twice. Go check it out for yourself.

When I recommend a post to @c-squared, I can not help smiling when I check back on Discord and see this on my recommendation. This means that it was accepted and worth the @c-squared upvote.

That is what makes me happy specially when I follow through the post and see this comment on it! 😊

On the other hand, I have to admit that there are still a lot to learn even in curating.

  • I had one recommendation that got an "ant" response which tells me it is not of a good quality.
  • I also had a couple of recommendations that were bypassed. I suppose those do not meet the qualification.
  • Then I had a recommendation that was found out to be a scam (read: scam, not spam). It was not just embarrassing but horrifying too! The photos used on the post were copyright free from the internet and not the author as he claimed to be. I charged that to experience and had been more careful in recommending a post.

Another thing that make me smile is this smiley bot. I smile back when I see it. I was surprised when I had the bot message for level 1 because I do not know what it is for. I assume that it is about the volume of posts that I have recommended. I wonder up to what level is there and I hope to see more of this. 😊

One thing that I am skipping is curating the non-English posts. I hope I can have more time for the translation.

... as I often find myself in the same predicament, e.g. trying to support the PIFC community ... You have pointed out a different way to do this. In the background. I will have to investigate ...

I like it! 👍

Thank you for your compliment @roleerob! Yes, it feels good to be nominating newbies for a little help from the community. I am sure you can very much do it. 😊

I mentioned your post here @macoolette in a Discord exchange in C-Squared. As a result, they made me a curator. 😊 Now, rather than talk about it, that means I may have to actually follow through and do something! 😧

One of my favorite sayings:

"When all is said and done, a lot more is said than done ..." 😉

Yeah, right! Let's go curating... See you with your endorsement posts in Discord. 😊

That's really kind of you to do. I'm sure the new steemians appreciate the boost. And don't feel too bad about not commenting. What's really helpful for new steemians is just to look around and find communities of people that are interested in similar things. Hopefully these new steemians will find their niches soon.

Thanks for your compliment. I really hope they appreciate the small boost and that they don't easily give up and leave the platform.

I hope so as well. It is sad how difficult it is tl get started on this platform :/ hopefully things improve soon, but unless they change the RC issues I really doubt it will.

¡Excelente publicación @macoolette! Te felicito y doy las gracias por tu gran ayuda de curación, cariños y besos.

Thank you. 😊

Howdy there macoolette! Great post and I appreciate you working to welcome newcomers, unless they have friends on here already it's a tough road to climb. Not all of us have magnetic personalities like you. lol.
Anyway great job!

Magnetic personalities! I like that! And I really hope I have them because I don't even have many followers.

Hey, how have you been?

Howdy macoolette! Again. tonight, although there I have no idea what time of day it is.
But anyway, yes you have a wonderful personality..are you kiddin me? yes absolutely.
It's just because you don't have much time to spend on here that's why. I don't know if going
with steemhunt has hurt you in that area or not, it's kind of a branch off of the regular steemit
so people may find it a little distancing. I'm not sure about that but the main reason is the time
factor.
I'm doing great, just cruising along working on Steemit for the most part. It's been raining here so
I couldn't be working outside anyway.
Your job is going well but it takes almost all your time right?

Thanks for the compliment. I'll take that! 😄

Yap, Steemhunt is not of the regular articles or post you see on Steem which tells me only few are interested about it. And I guess you are correct, Steemhunt limited the engagement somehow. Only fellow Steemhunters would comment once in a while but that is fine. There is @janton who also pops up but even more often than them. 😄

So I guess the rain works on favor of Steem for you these days. Take the chance to get back to curie. I see only regular names there lately. I see many new names, which is good somehow.

Howdy today macoolette! Are you doing some on curie? I somewhat gave up on it because in order to spend time on curie means not getting to my regular followers and people that I like to talk to so I had to make a choice between the two.

Nope. I haven't had a single curie comment since the start of this year. Just like what I mentioned on this post, it is not fair to start a conversation and not be able to sustain it if the author is responsive. So I'd rather not comment at all.

it is very nice of you to choose your regular followers. Run for a witness and I will vote for you. 😄

Howdy today macoolete! Well that is very thoughtful of you not to engage when you know you won't have time to keep with the conversation. I guess you could just say good job and good luck! lol.

You have your priorities straight so that's a good thing. At this point no one knows if steemit or steem will even last so it's good to build your career in the real world.

Run for witness! lol. that's a new thought. Maybe someday if steemit lasts! Thank you for the confidence though!

Just saying good job and good luck without anything related to the post itself is spamming to me so I don't do it. Some may even think that I am commenting just for the sake of the prize. Someone already thought of me like that. I didn't know until he confessed when he saw me engaging really well with a newbie and not for the curie contest.

Yap, I think you can make it to a witness. 😄
