Greetings from the Great Plains!

Steem intro photo.jpg

Howdy folks! My name is John and I'm writing to you from the Great
Plains region of the United States. I am in the state of Texas which is
in the Southern Great Plains.

For those not familiar with our U.S. geography the area between the
Rocky Mountains and the great Mississippi River is known as the
Great Plains because the topography is generally considered to be flat.

I was raised on a farm out by Dodge City, Kansas where we raised
cattle and wheat. I left the farm in my 20s in search of more
profitable employment during my wandering years lived in
several different states including Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky
and Ohio.

My wife and I met in Ohio where we built and ran a successful real
estate business and ran that for 12 years but it was always my
dream to get back to country living. As they say.."you can take
the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of
the boy!"

When the real estate business became all consuming and we realized
we had no life outside of work we started planning our escape and
decided to move to the country and that's how we ended up in Texas.

It hasn't been easy because the property we bought had sat
abandoned for over 8 years and had interior damage from broken
water pipes in the attic so many of the walls were gutted.

The house and yard were overgrown with trees, bushes, cactus, weeds
and wild grass, much of it over 6 feet tall. You couldn't see out of any
of the windows because they were covered with vines and the
overgrowth was so tall and thick around the house that we had to rent
a Brush-hog to knock it down.

The photo below is of me using a lawn tractor in one of the areas
which was short enough to use the tractor mower on.

mowing.jpg

We had to take the property back from nature who had engulfed it
and turned it into part of it's own domain. Not only was the place
overgrown with plants but there were swarms of wasps and hornets
with nests built inside and out, grasshoppers were jumping all over us
as well as the biggest spiders we'd ever seen.

We also had to deal with scorpions, snakes(I've lost count of how
many I've shot) and armadillos who loved to dig all around the house
and tear up the yard.

It took over 2 years of clearing, cutting, trimming on the outside and
cleaning, repairing and remodeling on the inside but it's finally
coming together.

North pond.jpg

Now I'm as happy as a "pig in slop" (another country saying) because
we have our own place on a totally private 15 acres of land with 2
ponds. Actually around here they say "pots" because any pond which
is man-made is called a Pot, at least in this part of the country.

Oh and we also have a German Shepard named Jack who is a great
Watch Dog and is very protective. Here's Jack:

jack.jpg

We love the peace and quiet of the country...well there IS alot of
gunfire out here because the area is a gun culture so we hear
shooting all around us anytime of the day or night.

Also being just 2 miles from a gun range assures the constant sound
of gunfire. I grew up with guns being raised on the farm and I'm a
bit of a gunslinger myself but even in Kansas we didn't have the
gun culture that they do here.

It's not a negative though, it's a positive thing... when my wife
and I moved here and found out about all the dangers of living in
the country(coming in another post) we realized that one would have
to be a dang fool not to be armed.

And Mama didn't raise no fool. I'll tell some stories about that later.

One of my passions is researching history of all kinds but particularly
the history of the Old West in regards to the settling of the land and
the battles and strife between the Native American Indian tribes and
the U.S. Army and Settlers.

Texas is rich in that history so I will be telling some stories of the Old
West and the modern times as well which you may find of interest.

My wife and I are also passionate about staying healthy and eating
right, anti-aging methods, supplements and working out. And if ya'll
have any tips on anti-aging or staying healthy after age 40 then we'd
love to hear about them.

We started the Keto Zone diet a few weeks ago and I'll be writing
some about that because it's turned into quite an amazing program
with some surprising and beneficial results.

All photos taken by us and are of our property and some of the
wildlife that we have here and enjoy watching.

deer.jpg

My wife is a city girl but has quickly adapted to the country lifestyle
and feels like it's home. It # IS # Redneck country but we love it! lol.
Oh, for non U.S. readers the term Redneck is a positive one.

Although it has become something of a pejorative term it basically
means "good ol country people". Hardworking, strong in faith and
character but not sophisticated or polished and I reckon that's
putting it mildly. I'll write a post about what a Redneck is from the
perspective of a Redneck.

I will say this about the people here though, in our area...my wife
has lived in different parts of the U.S. but has NEVER been treated
with such respect, caring and kindness as she has by the men in
these parts. She's been called Ma'am more in the last 2 years than
she has in her entire life!

vulture.jpg

That's all for now, I look forward to getting to know people from
all over the world because from what I've seen so far this
community has some of the best people on the planet!

Not only that, as if that wasn't exciting enough, I read in
an email the other day that Weise Ratings ranked Steem
as one of their top recommendations for 2018 and one
of the safest cryptos on the market.

Hi (here I am not knowing how to address you, might it be ok to call you sir? mr? I dunno, please let me know what do you prefer).

So this was just first post, from here on I can say it is nice to meet you John. Currently I'm working in my spare computer (it has almost 8 years now), since I have loaded on cache your full post history in one browser page and esteem surfer desktop version simultaneously the computer might crash if I attempt to search my first post to paste it here in order to introduce myself as well 😆 So after posting this comment I will search on my profile and edit the comment to add my introductory post.

I have lived my entire live in a city, I would also like to live in the country side someday. When that happens I want to take amazing shots and share them with everyone as you did 😊

In order to overcome my not that convenient shyness I have to retell my self that there are not silly questions but there are a lot of fools who don't dare to ask 😅 Ok, so what does howdy mean? I have noticed that it is your usual greeting, but I have no idea what it stands for or what its origin is.

Best regards.

So here it is, my introductory post on Steem and my introductory post on Whaleshares.

Howdy again sir joelsegovia! Oh, the greeting "howdy" just means hello.
Many years ago people used to say "how do you do?" for a greeting and then it got shortened to Howdy
but only the people in the South of the United States uses that greeting for some reason.

As far as what you call me, I like janton or cowboy. Many people call me cowboy because I was raised on a farm and ranch and also love the history of the old West and live in Texas so it makes sense. I like to be respectful to people so I use "sir" also but you don't have to call me that unless you want to. What about you? Do you have a nickname that you prefer instead of your username?

Your steemit introduction post is in Spanish, is there an easy way to translate it? I'm fairly bad at computer and tech things. The whaleshares link doesn't work and I'm not a member there. By the way, how do you like it there and is it similar to steemit?

So you are saying you are shy? Me too! But I have reason to be, hey you are a fine, handsome young man, I wouldn't be shy if I were you! lol.

You lived in a city your whole life, that's amazing. I almost said that's too bad! lol. But many people love the city and it fits them well. I am so alarmed at what is happening in Venezuela, how are you making it there? We heard there are terrible food shortages.

Hi Janton, I added an Enlgish version of my introductory post at the bottom of the original one. If you wan to translate some post (when using google chrome) just right-click on a blank space on the page and the option "translate to English" should be available in the pop-up menu. Since I used too many colloquial Spanish words that will not help you much while reading my post.

Regarding living in a city, I really like my city despite all the issues it has. The thing is that I want to have the experience of living in the country side for at least a couple of years.

Getting and account on Whaleshares is fairly easy, there are some members of thealliance there. Whaleshares started as a fork (clone) of the code behind the Steem blockchain and some of the availables opensource front ends (like busy). Then the developers have started to add new features to it somewhat making it different. Although the code is mostly the same the intention behind each project is different. Whaleshares is more community/blogging oriented, the developers and witnesses there focus more of their attention on keeping the community engaged with many Discord events and many whale funding community projects with their big upvotes.

Howdy today sir joelsegovia! Thanks so much for adding an English translation and for the tip on translating while on Chrome.
I agree that you should live in the country for awhile, it would be very interesting to see if you enjoyed it or if you would miss all the conveniences of the city. Are you guys able to get all the necessities you need? We keep hearing about food and other types of shortages.
Are you living with others, do you have an apartment or a house?

I've heard good things about Whaleshares but at the moment all my times is spent on steemit and I still don't have time to do what I want. Do they have flagging and downvoting on whaleshares? I didn't think a community could be more blogging oriented than steemit, so that's interesting!

Welcome On Steemit platform... Keep Steeming pals

Thank you @introbot, are you a cyborg? I will check out all the links, I've never seen so much information on one platform, holy moly! But I reckon it wasn't put together by a bunch of Rednecks nor was it put together in one day! Much obliged!

But I reckon it wasn't put together by a bunch of Rednecks nor was it put together in one day!

A redneck can still survive around here though!

I'll drink to that.. or maybe chew on a scorpion sir Wildman @papa-pepper!

Welcome to Stemmit, from a fellow newbie. Beautiful property you have there. My wife and I have bought our retirement home too, and are working to fix it up as well. We've got six years left before we retire and move there full time. I see you like history. I'm a historian and history writer myself. Welcome to the forum, fellow 4-21-18 classmate! Please do follow me, and I'll go follow you as soon as I finish typing this.

Thank you @mepatriot! I have followed you, I really like your blog! A Christian Constitutionalist from Maine?
I didn't now there was such a thing up there, I thought that was Liberal Land! lol. I'm going to go read all your stuff, you must be a prolific writer which I'm not. I'm like an old rooster scratching around in the dirt hoping to find something to eat, that's the way I feel when it comes to writing but I'm gonna try anyways.

Oh yea, bro. Northern Maine is very much like Texas, except COLDER. Lots of gun-toting conservatives up here. We call Aroostook County (the largest east of the Mississippi) the "real Maine."...lol...

I've been writing a long time and never made any real money, but for me it's more about sharing discoveries and doing my part to keep our country sane. I am what some would call a "revisionist" historian, but if you ask me, I'm just trying to restore some of what the real revisionists have ruined/hidden/revised.

@mepatriot I suddenly love Northern Maine! I like real wood-burning fireplaces so I could get used to the cold! I love your mission to educate and help preserve the Republic.
Is your retirement property also in Maine?

Yeah...just as rural too, but it's in northern Penobscott County in a little lakeside community called "Norcross"...population 22.

Man, I burn 8 cords of wood in this big old farmhouse I'm in now. You can't beat wood heat. Hoping to reduce our costs significantly when we get into the "new place" though. It's actually a younger house than any of our kids are, whereas we've lived in two homes that are both pre-1850 up to now. The wife is looking forward to retiring to a place with fewer maintenance and upkeep requirements.

Ya'll have some strange county names up there! Indian names?
And 2 pre-1850 homes? wow, what are they, log homes?
Yeah I bet your wife is looking forward to a younger home! lol.

But for an Historian is sounds kinda cool.

Yes, Indian names. Just those two counties I've named are like half the state. Huge land-wise, but fairly sparsely populated.

No, not logs...old stick-built farm houses.

Yeah, the wife definitely deserves this new place we bought. It will be a nice change for me too. I wasn't going to be cutting and stacking 8 cords a year into my 60s...lol...

Welcome John! This is a very nice and long introduction that I truly enjoyed reading it!

I believe my husband spent a year long in Ohio before but I don't remember exactly the story 🤣

Redneck is often associated with negative meaning but I'm from oil city, where redneck means something else 😊

Cheers,

trythisone (2).jpg

Thank you Ma'am! I know about the oil field Roughnecks but oil field workers are also called Rednecks? Are they similar to Roughnecks? I'm sorry your husband had to spend a year in Ohio. Just teasing! it's a great state, just not nearly as great as Texas and the people ain't very friendly neither. What kind of baking do you specialize in? I'll visit your blog but it'll probably drive me crazy because on the Keto diet sugars are strictly forbidden which is a severe bummer for us. I've been dreaming about donuts lately!

Yes! The Roughnecks are the ones who work a lot digging up and whatnot, under the sun, which then they would get sunburnt much, hence they are the red-necks 😊 at least that's what I read awhile back from one of Unocal's books of oil history in Indonesia, while waiting for the GP to see me 😂 yes, tons of oil related books at the doctor's clinic 😂

I owned a cake decorating business, but I have been putting it on hold since I turned vegan and then joined Steemit 😅

I am keto too, although vegan keto, my husband is keto as well but regular keto 😊

And omg, yesterday I was craving donuts so very much I texted my husband about it all day long.

So looked up vegan keto donut recipes, nothing was good imo. Tried using my protein powder, it didn't really work (it would with egg obviously but can't...vegan 😅).

Cheers,

trythisone (2).jpg

Ha! Thats too funny about the donuts! I'm tellin ya this Keto thing is not for the weak-willed, the first few weeks were torture for me but the health benefits were too substantial not to give it a try. But how in the world do you do a Vegan Keto diet??
what the? The only thing that keeps me going is being able to eat lots of eggs, beef and chicken... how do you get enough protein?
Thanks for writing back with the Redneck explanation and also the oil industry books in the doctors office thing was hilarious too, now I know where to go to study the oil industry!

hi
i just follow you

Thank you twilliams!

You have a minor grammatical mistake in the following sentence:

and turned it into part of it's own domain.
It should be its own instead of it's own.

My bad, should've known that!

Ignore the grammar nazi, he often makes mistakes himself while trying to correct people 😂

Hi @janton, you have made a very nice intro, I just put your post link in my blog, if you like it then please upvote and follow me, otherwise please comment in that post, then i will remove your link.
