MANGROVE PLANTING IN COLLABORATION WITH CEBU GREEN PROJECT, ASIA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY AND DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES! (FOR BETTER CEBU PHILIPPINES)
Mangroves have significant contributions that benefit the coastal ecology. It has an ability to grow in places where no ordinary trees can. It is used for tropical coastal vegetation consisting of such species. Mangroves prevent coastal ecosystem from damaging natural disasters. It also serves as the habitat of the species living in the coastal areas. In tropical countries like Philippines, it's one of the million ways to help balance our ecosystem specially nowadays we are almost experiencing global warming. They also improve the water quality of the areas where they are planted. Swamps with mangroves shields coastal areas from erosion, storm surge, typhoons and tsunamis. In collaboration of Cebu Green Project, Asia Pacific University (APU) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources and kind-hearted local volunteers and Japanese students made things happen and it was indeed successful.
Cebu Green Project founded by our good Japanese friend Hironobu Maehara aims to build a better Cebu by having clean ups all around the City. Making Cebu as the cleanest province all over the Philippines. It's a non-profit organization which solely for transforming Cebu into a better community for the benefit of future generations primarily getting help purely from local and international volunteers.
Don't you know that it takes two years for the plants generally become self-supporting and can be thinned out where required? People should fathom so that they would stop cutting these trees.

Most of the participants of the event were Japanese students staying in the Philippines to study English. By the way, I work as a part time English teacher to Japanese students that's why I am very interested about their culture and meeting them. I have talked to some of them and they told me that in Japan it's really way too different compared in the Philippines because people in Japan are more get together and organized government system and they want to bring that in our country. It's just very heart-melting to see the effort of the volunteers specially from these Japanese nationals knowing that it's not their country but have compassion and passion to help.
The event was held at Labogon, Mandaue City. When we arrived there, the place that we were supposed to do the activity was in high tide so we became skeptic that perhaps we were not able to continue with the activity but we waited for few hours and coordinated with the locals to find a spot where we can plant the mangroves. At this moment, I was very proud of them because they didn't even mind the stinky water and they were very determined to plant all and not waste even a single mangrove.
I was very fortunate to have given this opportunity because It was my first time to plant mangroves. I learned a lot of things on how to properly plant mangroves and its importance. Most specially realizing that there are actually million of ways to help the community and environment we just have to take the first step by doing it yourself. I also learned from my Japanese friends that initiative is very important. If we do things without being asked to do so, I can already see a whole new better world.
