Strava extension overview, StravistiX
Here is a review for a Chrome Extension for the Strava website named StravistiX. For those that have never heard of Strava, it is a site that uses GPS to visually see a map of your bike rides, runs, hikes, snowboarding, etc. It shows basic statistics regarding your activity for free, the paid service show much more data.
With the StravistiX Chrome extension added, it gives the free user a bit more data to analyze. Here is a trail run that I did last year on Strava.
.
.
Here is the basic data that is provided. It's actually pretty good as you can see the pace, grade, grade adjusted pace and cadence if you have a cadence sensor. You can move a scroll bar to see various data on certain parts of the activity. (Like where you slacked off and when effort was high) The scroll bar was at the end of the run in the example below and a data box pops up.

With the StravistiX extension, you can also see the following data points in customizable bar graph form. You can roll you mouse over a bar to see exactly how long you held your heart rate within a certain parameter. In the example below, the Z10 bar is highlighted with a HR between 142 bpm to 148 bpm which I was in for 13 minutes and 10 seconds during the run.

You can also see your year over year progression. The data below is from bike rides, both for road and mountain bike. You can scroll your mouse over various dates and you the data at that time for the year. You can choose distance, elevation, time or the number of activities.

This is the year over year for runs. You can see that in 2012, I had the highest year regarding 'runs'. It also included hikes... In 2012, I broke my clavicle in a cycling accident so I was hiking instead...

You can download the Strava application on iOS or Android and it's free to use. It's best to view your activities on a computer screen to see all of the data when using StravistiX.
You do not have to be a runner or cyclist, you can just record a walk or a hike as well. I think it is good to see your workout history as you also get a good idea of how many hours you worked out during the week and how long it took for a certain activity.
Happy workouts!
Looks amazing and very creative site.
What else do you need for hiking to get all the data above with Strava?
You can get a heart rate monitor strap from Garmin or Wahoo fitness. Garmin also has a cadence sensor that you clip onto your shoe. You can just use Strava on your phone for free just to log the GPS data.
Great, thank you for all this info. It’s realy helpfull.
I had no idea you could get an extension to get more from your Strava data, thank you. Although, if I install that extension I think i could lose all my spare time!
If your somewhat of a data geek, you will like this extension. I've always found it interesting to see the breakdown of my activities and relate them to my conditioning. (Or the alignment of the planets...)
Oh dear, this could be dangerous! Does it allow the same level of analysis on other people's runs? I'm a coach and often wondered if there was a way for me to delve deeper into my athletes' runs.
The extension is only for your Strava account. If your students have a GPS device, they can open the free Strava account and DL the extension.
If you get the paid Strava service which isn't that much, you get a lot more data.
I did see this site regarding running data analysis last year.
https://runscribe.com/
I think it would be useful for serious or competitive runners, like if your competing in the Boston Marathon....
I am not a serious runner, mostly a weekend warrior cyclist. I'm also >50, so getting much slower....
Thanks, I actually backed RunScribe's kickstarter campaign so have a version 1 pod but at the time the app wasn't great. I'll have to check out the current app and dig out my pod!
Thank you for the discovery! It's really cool to have more data.
I un googled myself last year, is there not another way to collect said data, without google? like a phone ap, or something?
