Time to get back to work. It has to be done. Trading today was all finished. Tools and equipment are ready.
But, is the old man ready. Ha
I had to clean out around the little walnut tree. I don't like it that close to the fence. But we will save it.
I can remember when we would pick up walnuts as kids and sell them to the produce store in town.
It put a little money in our pockets. For kids. That is exciting. It is now too. lol

Back to the clean up area. It needs to be cleared up some anyway. But mostly for the two little hickory trees.
Even if I never see one hickory nut in my lifetime from the trees. It is worth it. Someone will be glad that I cared.

Two cedars must be removed. But how I want to do that is the question. Save a log or maybe a post?
Also keeping in mind future fence for horses or cows.
I will have to cut high if that is what I want to do.

I knew I didn't cut a big enough notch. The chain is dull and wasn't cutting very well.
I should have put the new one I bought on. But, as always. I try to save. lol

Since the tree is lodged on other trees around it. How do I get it down? This is a very dangerous time.
A year or two ago a man that had cut trees all his life was killed by a falling tree.
So, caution is a must.
There is a grapevine attached to the tree. I will try to pull it down with it. Using a long rope.
20170908_143445.jpg

So we will tie the rope to the red iron horse.

It didn't work. The grapevine pulled loose. So I had to go back into the danger zone. I finally got it cut down.
I didn't like working so close to the lodged tree. Very dangerous.
But, we prevailed. As you can see below.

It took hours. I was a little tired. After playing all week. I need to get back to full working strength again.
Well, for me anyway. Ha
I have more to show and to tell you. Some good and some bad. It will have to be in a later post.
Here is what we have finished so far. See the little hickory tree next to the down log?

We are leaving the work area. We are not even close to being finished. It will take weeks.
But, we will get it done. It just takes time. The green "iron horse" will soon be back in action.

I really like the land.
The physical labor is nothing compared to a well groomed and planned out setting to look at.

Thank you for following along with me in my determination to clear and clean up the land.
As long as I have the time to keep working.

Together we will see my thoughts and ideas for how a homestead should look.
It is a lot of work. It will take years to finish it to my satisfaction. So, we move along slowly.
Like the turtle. Just keep on moving forward.

I really appreciate that you can readily recognize, by sight at a distance, the different species of trees growing on your property. Unfortunately, I currently couldn't tell the difference between a hickory tree and a beech tree. Little by little you are teaching us all, some of what you know and I happen to think that that's a beautiful thing. ;)

@rebeccaryan
Thank your so much for your reply. Just made it back to the hill. Would you believe a birthday cookout today.
No dancing girls for me this year. Maybe next year. What a silly, goofy old man I am. lol

I know a little about trees because I grew up cutting wood for firewood when I was a child.
Just basic knowledge. I am really fond of Hickory trees and Walnut trees. Maybe I won't get anything.
But, someone will. That is what counts. That is the correct way to think anyway.

Francis

@rebeccaryan
Oh Rebecca
Oh knarly327
Where art thou?
Why not take a peek. You are my leaders.

Francis

I'm glad you got everything accomplished that you did! I wouldn't be able to keep up with you but I sure as hell would try. I would love to have that kind of land!

@bluelightbandit
Oh, you could keep up with me easy. I am in the seventh decade of doing work.
Doesn't stop me, but I don't have the youthful strength I once had. I just keep on rolling along.
The land is nice. I would advise anyone to own some land.
Some day in the future. There will be two classes of people.
Those that have land and those that don't. At my age. I don't have that problem to think about.
Even 3-5 acres is huge. So comforting to have some land.

Francis

Good afternoon, Francis. Of course the iron horse is Your great helper. In such dangerous proximity to the felled tree should be used with caution. I'm glad all ended well. Have a nice day!

I guess it is a good thing to keep busy. Most times it makes for a longer healthier life.

if you own much property work is never done I can remember Dad saying there's always something to do

Looks like you can't see the forest for the trees. Lots and lots of trees.

Be the turtle Francis! The journey is part of the charm of a homestead. Keep the vision in sight and it will grow more and more in line. Even little accomplishments are encouraging.

@tamaralovelace
Thank you for your encouragement. I love the land. I don't love weeds and thorn trees.
I don't mind the work. It pleases me to see what I have accomplished each time I do something
worthwhile.
We will complete it though. If we have enough living days left. I am old. Old but healthy.
No drugs of any kind, no physical aliments of any kind.
But, with age. That could change.
But we plod on. It is too enjoyable not to.

Francis

Hahha that sounds just like me! I have a few acres myself. I get out and try to clear a bit in my old woman's way. We have these vines that are the bane of my existence. They have thorns that rake the daylights out of you lol. I simply enjoy the journey :)

Having a homestead is a lot of work but brings great satisfaction for a job well done. When we bought our property 10 years ago it was a pretty wild place with no fences and a lot of waist high weeds. We had a few salvageable trees and others that would make piles of fire wood. The land laid for a few years while we drew plans and saved money to build a house. No mortgage for us. When we bought the land we laughed and said it was our 10-year project. We are now into our sixth year of clearng, planting and building. And when we look at what we have accomplished it is amazing, but oh, there is so much more to do. It's still a ten year project!

@cecicastor
A 10 year project is a reasonable time period to shoot for. It takes time. Not to mention lots of money.
My project is just for fun. I like land. I don't live on it yet. Maybe never will.
Just depends on whether we want to change our life style. I grew up on a farm.
Most everything is not new to me. Just something I like to do.

Francis

As we grow older it is harder for us to change our way of life. We become complacent with our life as it is. But change is possible...

Great pictures! You have done a lot of work

@gossamerlily
Lots of work has been done over the last few years. But there is a lot left to do.
I will be showing some of it on Steemit as time rolls along.
Thank you for your reply and upvote. I appreciate it.
