Crazy Rich Steemians

in #movie6 years ago

So the other day I jumped on the bandwagon to watch Crazy Rich Asians. It's been getting many positive reviews, and my friends were all pretty excited about it. (There are no spoilers in this post)

I'll just say right away that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Coming in, I had found out some fun facts, that

  1. The movie has an all Asian cast. This wasn't really a big deal in my mind, but it comes in contrast to the tendency in Hollywood to favor white actors. The other point to make here is that the cultural identity of the role in question is pretty critical to the story, so it would have been pretty bizarre barring some sort of magical makeup or computer magic. But why bother with that, when you have so many talented Asian actors?
  2. For distribution they declined a very good offer from Netflix with high pay and creative freedom because of the cultural impact of a theatrical release.
  3. The cast was found through an international casting call and there are some interesting choices, including the lead who prior to this role was a biracial Malaysian television show host with no prior acting experience. Apparently casting biracial actors caused quite a stir as well, but at this point I stopped paying attention.

Building up to the movie was watching the co-stars interviewing with various late night show hosts and describing the movie, and so I went in knowing that it was a romantic comedy. The funny thing is that other folks we watched the movie with did not realize it would be a romantic comedy and had to quickly adjust their expectations as the movie progressed.

It was fun to see a variety of reactions to the movie. As I said, I enjoyed it. The production quality is what you'd expect from Hollywood, and while the plot is nothing too special I'd say it fills that special mushy romantic comedy hole that some people have for their guilty pleasure they don't want anyone else to know about. I also liked the fun animations they used to show how fast gossip travels in the social circles in the movie.

One of us disliked it so much she wanted to walk out of the theater, but sat through it uncomfortably. We were going to eat dinner afterwards anyway. This was one who thought the movie was not going to be a romantic comedy. I did read from the Wikipedia article that the marketing was intentionally vague so that people would not know what to expect, so that fits.

My wife, who grew up in Taiwan, was not impressed. She thought there were many elements that were too "American", among other deficiencies, such as the main male character being boring, which I could see as well. The most interesting part after all was the interaction between the female main character and the mother, which they consciously made the focus of the movie. The movie emphasizes the gap between Asians and Asian Americans, which not many people may know exists. Indeed, in some cases Asian Americans are looked down upon by the Asians for "forgetting who they are". And what do you know, it's amusing to see this difference in opinion concerning the movie between my wife and me (I'm Asian American).

The final point is that reading the book plot synopsis from Wikipedia, unsurprisingly the book plot and character development is much richer than the movie. Makes you wonder whether the Netflix 3-part format would have been a better format for the story. Probably so, but I can see how a theatrical release would generate much more buzz, as much as it did. (Well at least around where I live, not sure about you).

Anyway, any of you see this movie? What did you think about it? And will the world be ready for Crazy Rich Steemians?

I think all movies should probably start to do international casting calls. At least the ones with a big enough budget to fly people in.

We have to start admitting that there is no way that we will have a cast that isn't white-washed unless we hire international actors. The majority of Americans are "white". That is to say, they're Anglo-American. If more movies did an international casting call, they could get actors from all over the place that are both great actors, and from a diverse cultural background. The number of Asian actors in America is limited. Every single one I can think of I like...but there's not many.

If we started hiring more Filipino and Thai and Chinese and Indonesian etc. actors, we'd probably see a lot more good movies where the characters aren't changed because a white actor is who seemed like they might be the best for the role.

Makes you wonder whether the Netflix 3-part format would have been a better format for the story.

They probably could have done a theatrical cut, with a Netflix 3-part version to be released a few months later. There are tons of movies that are cut way down...usually to their detriment.

I hadn't heard of this movie before this post... I kinda liked that series about the daughters of rich Chinese parents, so it sounded interesting at first...but I'm not sure if I would like it considering it's a romance. Especially with the main actor being boring...

Yeah, it's rather interesting, how then even the stories considered for movie adaptations would need to take into account distribution of roles. But I suppose each group would need representation into the movie industry.

I wonder if they will do another long-form version. It's true that it certainly could happen, though not sure how it works with licensing and whatnot.

If the past is any judge, they probably won't have a longer formed version for years, if ever. It's possible though. Hell, they're coming out with a Netflix series of The Hobbit. I'm sure it's going to be plenty long...and sucky.

“Eat your chicken nuggets, there are starving children in America!”

Sorry, but that was really funny.

I enjoyed the movie but my bar is set low and I see pretty much every movie released (thank you Moviepass).

For an entertaining, cute, two hour escape to a dark movie theatre with reclining seats - I vote yes.

That was a fun line haha. Oh and I liked the mother in this one.

Movie pass still chugging?

Moviepass is limping along. We got the annual pass in January and proceeded to get our investment back within the month (thinking that the business model just couldn't be sustainable). So now every movie we see is just gravy from the financial perspective.

Until recently we could see any movie at any time without issue. Currently, it's a kind of movie roulette to see which films and which showtimes are available through the app. Since we go to the movies several times a week and our schedule is flexible it's not really that big of a deal for us. They've also added the annoying requirement that we upload a picture of our ticket for verification - so apparently they ran into some fraudulent use.

With the new pricing structure and their Uber like surge pricing (which I'm not subject to until my annual pass expires) I probably won't renew or it's possible they won't even be around anymore to renew anyway.

Well as long as you didn't buy their stock too ;). I know someone that "bought the dip" as a token of thanks for letting him see so many movies haha. And it's still going down...

Thankfully, no, I did not buy the stock. But it's just acting like it, since just about every stock I do buy then proceeds to fall off a cliff 😂 - investing 101 - don't buy any stock Tamala owns.

Someone walked out of a romantic comedy? Never seen that. The only time i walked out of a film is when it thoroughly dissapointed me in its direction, if for example i was invested in the wider story. Like with Star Wars Last Jedi.
But really, "one off" films i dont think can have such offence on me is . And its just a movie in the end.
The point your wife made on cultural impact of hollywood on something that is a story with a completely asian cast, might be correct... but still if it was a US made film culturally you will have similarities with the culture the film was made in.

Yeah it seems pretty obvious, huh. The movies made in Asia tend to have more elaborate and lean towards the absolutely ridiculous plots. In my case, if it has a story and I'm in the middle, I usually want to know what happens regardless of how terrible it is lol.

When does Crazy Rich Steemians come out? Soon?

I think we could write a good story about high crypto society with lambos and shunning dPOS consensus and some star crossed lover tokens?

then watch the creator leave steem and do an ico :P ;)

Take my opinon with a grain of salt,I think it's overhyped but I understand, it's the first Hollywood movie with all Asian cast. Though on the other note, when it's being played in Asia, it's less relatable, as your wife said, it has slightly too American element. For me, the plus point, it shows the world, Asia is not all about bush and we have amazing sky scrapper 😂

Overhyped is right. She also commented that the beginning segments felt like a tourism commercial. And you know what? It worked. I want to go there haha.

I haven't watched it and don't plan to watch it just because it's an Asian film produced in Hollywood as that alone doesn't justify me wasting a couple of hours. So it will have to be a good film. Will see what the reviews say first.

Having said that, its good to see some alternative to normal Asian films which seems to be dominated by martial arts and rubbish kung fu artist who thinks they are the king of the world

One of my friends was surprised that rotten tomatoes had rated it so high, but yeah I think ultimately it might boil down to what kind of movie you like or if you like the actors.

I agree about the typical style of movie as well. I do have a soft spot for Jackie Chan though.

Shame about the Netflix shun . I think Netflix normally do a great job with different cultural docu films and tv series. Il add it to the list now .
