Elderly Couple Who Claim Roundup Gave Them Cancer Are Granted Speedy Trial Against Monsanto
Several months ago, Monsanto lost in court and had been ordered to pay over $250 million in damages after a jury decided that they were liable for their products contributing to D. Johnson becoming diagnosed with non-hodgkin's lymphoma. There are other similar cases waiting to head to trial; Monsanto is currently facing thousands of potential lawsuits
Monsanto has looked to appeal that decision with the case involving Johnson and it could be many years before he ever sees a dime. The damages that they've been ordered to pay have also reportedly so far been reduced to $78 million.
Now, Monsanto will be looking to tackle the next lawsuit. A judge in California has recently granted an expedited trial for a case involving a couple who allege that their exposure to Roundup had caused them to become diagnosed with cancer.
Another trial on the same issue is expected to take place earlier than that, Feb next year in San Francisco federal court, involving more Roundup accusations.
For those who are still waiting for their day in court, they might be ill and feel as if they don't have a great deal of time to wait for justice. Meanwhile, Monsanto can reject to the request for a speedy trial to take place, knowing that these victims suffering from a variety of ailments don't have much time to live, and they can afford to carry out a lengthy appeal process.
There is concern for the financial exposure that Bayer might face with these lawsuits that Monsanto has gathered over the years, their shares have dropped more than a third this year.
Following the Monsanto takeover, it's now reported that Bayer will be looking to dissolve some companies such as Coppertone and Dr. Scholl's, that they will also be looking to cut at least 12,000 jobs.
For the Pilliod couple who are looking to take their fight to court next year, they had sought to fast-track their case because they were worried they didn't have long. Eventually, the judge granted their request for a speedy trial.
