Foraging for food - part 6 Blackberries

in #food7 years ago

In case your wondering who taught me what foods we could eat it was my Dad. He felt it was something all of his children should know. The person who taught my Dad was my Grandfather as he taught all of his children. So the information on foraging I am sharing with you was something that has been handed down within the family.

Who doesn't love some fresh blackberries to eat. The thing about foraging food is you get to eat most of them as you forage them. Blackberries grew along the sides of the roads and the edges of the woods. They are anothe thorny plant so becareful when you pick these.

There is nothing like a bowl of blackberries with some fresh cream on them. Or blackberry sauce on some pancakes.
We would can blackberries. Make blackberry jam and blackberry syrup. We would also make pies, cobblers and muffins and fruitbars with the blackberries. We would freeze the blackberries in bags and separetly on cookie sheets. My family would use the individual frozen berries in water and lemonade to cool the drinks and give them a different flavor.

Stay tuned for part 7- pine trees
