Music Word of the Day: Q
Term: Q
Definition: Q, short for "quality factor"
is a term in music recording that refers to the peak resonance of an equalizer. Q determines bandwidth of the frequencies to be adjusted by the equalizer. The higher the Q the narrower the bandwidth and vice versa.
Although defining what Q is may be easy, understanding its affect on audio so simple. With a high Q (low bandwidth) adjusting the range of the Q produces a a distinct wah-wah sound.
Properly adjusting the Q of an equalizer is critical before adding compression or unwanted sound artifacts may occur.
Music Word of the Day
Every day I make an attempt to add a little bit more music knowledge to the Internet, one word at a time. Realizing there aren’t many comprehensive and complete online music dictionaries, I set out on a mission to compile my own.
