Art Word of the Day: Scriptorium
Term: Scriptorium
Definition: A room in a monastery
in which books and scrolls are written, copied, illuminated, and housed. This was especially significant during the Middle Ages, when scriptoriums (another plural form is scriptoria) served as the principal European sites for the production and preservation of manuscripts. They were found in almost every monastery after the 8th century. Also see bookbinding, calligraphy, codex, illumination, manuscript, miniature, monasticism, palimpsest, paper, parchment, rotulus, and vellum.
