La Última Esperanza
El destino de la tierra se decidiría en playa de esta pequeña bahía, este era uno de los últimos rincones del continente donde aun los niveles de toxicidad del mar no eran intolerables; del funcionamiento del sistema descontaminante dependería si, definitivamente, sería necesario dejar el planeta, o si existía alguna esperanza de supervivencia aun en él.
Se trataba de un sistema experimental, inspirado en los diseñado por Samuel Hilbert para la purificación de la atmósfera, pero este era capaz de descomponer a nivel molecular los agentes que estaban envenenando las aguas.
Si bien el dispositivo fue originalmente planeado para el proceso de terraformación, en planetas con grandes océanos en los que hubiere minerales nocivos disueltos y sus primeras versiones estaban ya en un viaje a varios rincones de la galaxia en las naves colonizadoras, su prueba de fuego seria realizada en los océanos terrestres y se iniciaría en este rincón poco contaminado, desde donde, si todo funcionaba bien, se empezaría a desplazar a regiones más profundas y con mayor concentración de agentes tóxicos.
Se trataba de una planta descontaminante, basada en nanotecnología, en la que grandes cantidades de agua eran succionadas de regiones contaminadas y expulsada, una vez purificada por nanobots, en regiones con un menor nivel de toxicidad. Si demostraba tener éxito en esta región y mantener por un largo periodo de tiempo niveles aceptables la toxicidad en esta pequeña región, sería un incentivo como para invertir tiempo y esfuerzo en ampliar el programa a otras regiones para así poder pensar en un esfuerzo de descontaminación global.
La iniciativa de filtrado funcionó durante más de ocho meses, sin embargo los niveles de ácido cianhídrico y de sulfuro de hidrógeno, que se filtraba desde el manto fundido de la tierra, eran demasiado grandes como para poder ser controlados, aun en una pequeña bahía como esta, poco a poco, los esperanzados equipos de científicos de la fundación oceanográfica, que lideraban la iniciativa, fueron notando como después de casi un año de buen funcionamiento, los niveles de toxicidad de la bahía empezaron a subir aun con el equipo funcionando a su máxima capacidad.
Este pequeño fragmento de costa fue testigo de la última esperanza de la humanidad por rescatar el planeta de su condena de muerte, pero ya la propia Tierra había decretado el final de la vida como se conocía, la última esperanza de los humanos y de las pocas especies que aun podían ser rescatadas, estaba en el espacio, en la estación Pegasus, las colonias del sistema solar y las naves colonizadoras, que ya estaban en su viaje de varios cientos de años luz, a mundos que pudieran ser habitables.

The Last Hope
The fate of the earth would be decided on the beach of this small bay, this was one of the last corners of the continent where even the levels of toxicity of the sea were not intolerable; the functioning of the decontamination system would depend if, definitely, it would be necessary to leave the planet, or if there was any hope of survival even on it.
It was an experimental system, inspired by those designed by Samuel Hilbert for the purification of the atmosphere, but it was capable of decomposing at the molecular level the agents that were poisoning the waters.
Although the device was originally planned for the process of terraformation, in planets with large oceans in which there were dissolved harmful minerals and their first versions were already in a trip to several corners of the galaxy in the colonizing ships, its fire test would be carried out in the terrestrial oceans and would begin in this little contaminated corner, from where, if everything worked well, would begin to move to deeper regions and with greater concentration of toxic agents.
It was a decontaminating plant, based on nanotechnology, in which large quantities of water were sucked from contaminated regions and expelled, once purified by nanobots, in regions with a lower level of toxicity. If it proved successful in this region and maintained for a long period of time acceptable levels of toxicity in this small region, it would be an incentive to invest time and effort in expanding the program to other regions in order to think of a global decontamination effort.
The filtering initiative worked for more than eight months, however the levels of hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen cyanide, filtered from the molten mantle of the earth, were too large to be controlled, even in a small bay like this one, little by little, the hopeful teams of scientists from the oceanographic foundation, who led the initiative, were noticing that after almost a year of good operation, the toxicity levels of the bay began to rise even with the equipment working at its maximum capacity.
This small fragment of coastline witnessed humanity's last hope of rescuing the planet from its death sentence, but the Earth itself had already decreed the end of life as it was known, the last hope of humans and of the few species that could still be rescued, was in space, in the Pegasus station, the colonies of the solar system and the colonizing ships, which were already on their journey of several hundred light years, to worlds that could be inhabited.
