La caverna sin fin

~

The Endless Cavern

~

The people who lived around that forest, tried as much as possible, never to talk about the incident numbers that had happened there. It was a taboo subject, which pretended to be hidden from the new generations, even so, the rumors never disappeared, and among the young people there was always talk of legends and myths about this forest and its enigmatic cavern. There was nothing else to do, to hide their existence, it meant exterminating all the people who lived close to it, the information that they had was irremediably transmitted from generation to generation, and the dangers they hid were practically inevitable.

Among one of the best known legends is the fateful description of the disappearance of a young newly married couple. A few days after their marriage, they decided to take a short walk through the forest, until they spotted in the distance the great and imposing cavern in the distance. As an adventure and distraction from the new marriage routine, they challenged each other to enter the cave and explore it. Finally they decided to enter together and see with their own eyes the geological wonders that might be there. Apparently that was the last decision they made, because since then no one ever heard from them again.

Although there had been a large number of expeditions of rescuers for the caverns, most of the time they were unable to find even the slightest trace of the disappeared, in other things, the same rescuers ended up being victims, and nothing was ever heard from them again. This type of expeditions were tried a few times, until the same people of the adjacent towns, understood that there was nothing to do, that it was better to leave the cave with its solitude, and rather to try to prevent as it gave place, that another person tries to enter it.

Approximately 100 years passed. The customs of the population were often very conservative, some others changed according to the fashions of the time, but what never changed, was the absolute and irrevocable prohibition that made the parents to their children, in relation to never approach the forest, much less enter the cave that had claimed so many lives in the past. All the children of the time followed each of these indications, and for several years, no new victims of the famous cave were heard of.

So much time went by without talking about these incidents, that each of the stories that their ancestors told in so many details became stories based on legends, myths, simple stories that ended up being used to scare the children when they didn't want to finish their lunch, or didn't want to go to bed late. The cave went from being an extremely dangerous place to being the protagonist of many local legends that entertained people of all ages, regardless of their religious beliefs.

It was such a disposition of information that a few years after opening the forest, it was no longer the danger zone that had been closed forever, now it was an area with great economic potential if it became the city's central park, would give the landscape a modern air, and would contribute to the economic growth of the area. Families strolled on weekends, children played with their pets, and teenagers took advantage of the opportunity to rest from their academic routine every afternoon, walking for a while in the new park. Some people had a certain respect for the great cave, but it was only a fact attributed to the stories their parents told them, nothing more than that...

One of those hot summer days, Robert promised his high school classmates that he would enter the cave, he thought he was brave enough, and needed to show it to the whole class, especially Sandra, the girl of his dreams, the one he had been attracted to for a few years. Most of Robert's classmates accompanied him to the woods that day, there had to be witnesses to the fact, so they waited from the outside for Robert to come in and come out with some interesting stone that he found in there.

Upon entering, Robert saw just what he expected to see, a pile of stones, some quite common, others much more eye-catching, there were some minerals, small wells and quite a few insects. Robert did not understand very well what was the origin of all the legends he heard as a child, if the cave they were talking about was nothing more than a simple cave, without dangers or extraordinary beings. Suddenly Robert felt as if the floor supporting his feet had disappeared from one moment to the next. It was a sensation of free fall that never ended, Robert inside was very scared, but impatiently awaited the blow he would feel when he reached the ground, giving an end to his fall, however this never happened.

The sensations experienced, escaped from Robert's reasoning, it was difficult to understand what was happening there, but he was sure that he was living it and that it was no hallucination. In the distance, he could hear the cries of his companions who urged him to come out of the cave, that he had already spent a lot of time inside and that the demonstration of his bravery had already become clear.

Robert ended up in a large room, with quite large blue-gray tiles. In front he could see a large wooden door. The first thing he thought was that this door would surely be the way out of his perdition, but he did not realize that he was not alone in the room. There was next to him a kind of immaterial being, a being without form or outline, it simply spread throughout the room, without letting itself be seen properly, but violently manifesting its presence in the senses of Robert, who tried to fight with all his forces against this creature, without success and already exhausted enough to fight with something that he would never defeat, Robert fell to the floor, and without any energy, he emitted his last sigh. In the village Robert was never heard from again, and the park was shut down.
