1UP System: A SMT Doing For Steemians

We are starting to notice different projects that solve problems on the STEEM blockchain that many view being overlooked by the Steemit development team. This is the beauty of blockchain, anyone with an idea can get a project off the ground and hang it on the blockchain.

I wrote the other day about User Authority, a new reputation system that is now part of this ecosystem. This is completely separate from the reputation system found on the STEEM blockchain which is based upon upvotes. The nice part of User Authority is that applications will be able to integrate it in.

Another issue many have is curation. There are a number of approaches to try and determine quality content. This is only going to get harder as more applications coming online bringing together people that have differing ideas about what is important to them. The 1UP system provides another layer from outside the Steemit development team that provides a solution.

If you are not familiar with 1UP, it is a curation system. The idea is to give 1UP power to the communities which allows them to upvote what they feel is important. The main account will place a vote which will enable all others to follow. This is similar to the curation trail we are familiar with via steemauto. There is one twist however.

The typical curation trail have the account vote first with the trailers all upvoting afterwards. This means that the large voting power preceded everyone else. While the author receives benefit of the large voting account, the smaller accounts that follow do not.

1UP completely reverses this. Through this curation system, once the main community account "upvotes", it is delayed. The reason this happens is the smaller accounts in the curation trail are placed in front of the main account by voting ahead of it. After the smaller accounts voted, then the main account follows behind with the big upvote.

This increases the awards that the curators receive, something that is not present with the existing system.

Here is how the present system looks compared to the 1UP curation system.

Since this is going to be a SMT protocol generated token, the 1UP rewards are on top of anything else that is granted either from the STEEM blockchain or the application itself. Since STEEM allows for payment up to 3 tokens, this is an added way to get compensation for the same activity.

This also empowers the communities. As the STEEM ecosystem grows, there are going to be a variety of diverse views, likes, and goals. This is moving away from just a blogging platform. With the 1UP system, moderators will be able to determine what content they feel is worthy of a large upvote. It is also way to reward those who are active on their application and another means to provide incentive.

The main advantage to this approach, in my view, is that communities can reward newer members. As it stands now, newer accounts are at an extreme disadvantage. With the "reverse" curation system, the smaller accounts will actually grow faster than the larger ones. This will help to spread the distribution out in greater quantities to more accounts.

It is nice to see @flauwy and the rest of the 1UP team take on this important project.
