A Critical Review of Zappl
After many delays, Zappl.com has finally launched. Zappl was originally proposed as a sort of Twitter-like "microblogging" service that would be built on top of the Steem blockchain and let people directly earn rewards for their normal Tweeting behavior. Zappl raised money from the Steemit community some months back, and then after a series of delays, the website version finally launched a couple days ago. Apparently the mobile app versions are still delayed.
Now: Did we get what we paid for?
I realize that Zappl is still in Beta, and that they didn't actually raise all that much money, and that we only actually know of one developer working probably-not-full-time on the project. I also realize that on some level, I'm comparing Zappl to Twitter -- and Twitter is polished to an expensive shine. Also, I don't think Zappl actually raised much money -- maybe $50k or something like that? That said, I can't help but be disappointed with several aspects of the Zappl service.
The Good
The website seems to work. You can log in, you can post "zaps," you can post comments on other peoples' stuff, you can follow people, etc. Here's a screenshot of a zap I posted from my alt account @philipnbrown; check it out yourself at https://zappl.com/#!/@philipnbrown.
The Bad
I've been told that Zappl actually stores your password on their site if you log in with your Steemit password. so DON'T LOG IN WITH YOUR PASSWORD, because if Zappl's security isn't good, then bad guys can hack them, steal your password, and use it to steal all your money. If you want to use Zappl, LOG IN WITH YOUR POSTING KEY. If you don't know what that means, don't use Zappl.
If you're a POCKET user, even if you log in with your posting key, Zappl will have access to your POCKET tokens. So please keep that in mind if you're deciding whether or not to use Zappl.
Also, even though it works, the website doesn't really work well. You get a lot of the spinny circle thing:
The "Meh"
The entire thing seems really... un-creative. Here's part of what I mean. When you write a post, you get this dialog bog:
Why is there a "Title" field? Zappl doesn't display the titles of posts. It seems like it would make a lot of sense not to make users enter a title that's just going to disappear in the blockchain anyway. Maybe the dev thought we'd want to put the title in so that it would display nicely on Steemit? But then what if I don't want to litter my Steemit blog with little posts about how I felt about my breakfast porridge?
Zappl.com appears to be mostly a Twitter-themed clone of Steemit.com, and that feels disappointing to me. I was hoping it would be more of a Twitter clone that uses the Steem blockchain to store some stuff. It would be really nice to use my main account on Zappl without it messing with how it works on Steemit. What if there's someone who is an awesome Zapper that I want to follow on Zappl, but I don't want their Zaps filling up my Steemit feed? Then I'm completely out of luck, because if you follow someone on Zappl, you're automatically also following them on Steemit. It would have been super cool for Zappl to have a separate "follow" so that your actions on one platform don't screw with your experience of the other platform.
So there you have it. I had a picture of Zappl being a new app with interesting and innovative functionality, but it's basically just a new front-end for Steem's basic features. Maybe I'm being much too harsh, but it seems to me that we've seen some more interesting things come from un-funded projects (DTube, DSound, ChainBB, etc), and my hope was that the money that Zappl has raised would lead to some cool innovations.
I've been told that Zappl actually stores your password on their site if you log in with your Steemit password
zomg...
I know, that's terrifying. We have SteemConnect for a reason, folks.
New apps could go the route of Mangosteem (@mynameisbryan where are you man?) and avoid clogging up the steemit feed.
@mynameisbrian - You need to stop being so lazy, bro! Your services are in demand!
Mangosteem!
Mangosteem!
MANGOSTEEM!!!
Chant with me, everybody!
MANGOSTEEM!!
MANGOSTEEM!!!!
MANGOSTEEM!!!!!!
@teamsteem you like mangoes right? Care to up vote my comment at 100%? 😃
P.S. Don't forget @ats-david's comment too!
Yeah! That's exactly what I was thinking about, but I couldn't remember the name of the app. That would be decent solution to the feed spam problem.
I think Zappl probably chose to use top level posts so that the steem api could be used to search by trending, hot, new, etc. Had they 'hidden' zappl content as comments they would have had to roll their own algorithms, which they should have done in my opinion.
I've been doing a lot of thinking about steem app design so that I can continue with Mangosteem development and I believe that I have a model that could be applied to most apps not following the standard blog format. Maybe I should make a post about it?
That would make sense. And yes, I'd love to read that hypothetical post of yours!
Yeah, that's what I meant by "uncreative."
Of course you should post about it! Even if you have nothing close to a functional product/service!
Do it. I dare you!
I'm still here.
Another zappl problem.... It seems if you try to follow users you cannot get past the letter b.
You click view more and all it ever loads are users with names that start with the letter a and the letter b. over and over. Alphabetically.... nothing beyond the first two letters of the alphabet.
Just my two STEEMS Worth.
Yeah, I noticed that as well. But fortunately, since Zappl uses the same follower list as Steemit, you can just use Steemit to follow people and not have to go through Zappl's interface.
What's stopping anyone here on Steemit from posting like they would on lets say "Twitter"?
NOTHING.
Who's able to stop anyone from posting here on Steemit as they would on lets say for example "Twitter"?
NOBODY!
So my question is:
What's the point to having a clone of something that we already have here on Steemit?
We are all individuals and if someone wants to post short posts as they may have done elsewhere, that is their choice and that is what I find to be the beauty of Steemit, it is multicultural, international and because it is on the blockchain it is very individual to each and every one of us Steemians.
I fail to see the point in this Zapple or any other clone of what we already have!
Well if the zaps are gonna reflect on our steemit account too, then I guess it's not much of a use. But yes, I think that maybe they can use custom SMT tokens in future and make an independent platform which is based on steem and not steemit.
Thanks for the information sir @biophil. I will like to ask your main opinion about whether to join zappl or not. The part where my account could be vulnerable to hackers is so scary but I think using it with my posting key should be okay just has you have mentioned. If it make one earn through posting on it apart from the earning of steem, then I think it's worth trying.
Please can you explain what pocket token means in a lame man language?
Pocket is an experiment to see if I could build a cryptocurrency that people can use without anything other than steemit.com. It's a mini-cryptocurrency that you can send people just by posting comments on Steemit! I'll send you some in the next comment.

Thanks for using POCKET! I am a confirmer bot for fun, trying to raise awareness about a hackathon! View my source confirmer code here.
using private key, much better than master key, some new projects are still a lot of obstacles and lots of bugs, I hope if zappl able to give comfort to the user, I am sure they will be free to surf at zappl.com
I've tried 3 times, and haven't succeeded in getting a zap with a youtube video to actually appear on zappl. One of three did appear on steemit (until I deleted it). I'll check back in 6 months. Glad I didn't give them any money.
Yep, i was also desapointed with what I saw when testing the beta version. So many questions came in also. IMO, Zapp is still in alpha mode. I hope the team improve it by having a more agile development. It's best to have a minimum product that works well with basic things.
This is awesome
seriously ,, thank you for this info
just hoping that zapp could be much more better in the future ...
for now, i will not dear use my main account, i will rather use the alternative. once again, thanks for the info
