20180903 Twenty-six Wild Turkeys come for a Visit - dTube

in #youarehope6 years ago (edited)

This is video I shot standing on my back porch, after my husband excitedly called me out to see the wild turkeys, which had come out of our woods and were busily foraging and stripping seeds in the tall grass near our home. There were initially twenty-three, then another three joined them from the woods, while I watched on and admired them from our back deck.

They started out about a hundred or so feet from me, but kept coming closer and closer, completely unperturbed by my presence, finally passing within maybe thirty or forty feet of me . . . maybe less. This was incredible to me . . . I've seen wild turkeys on our place many times, but never in anything approaching these numbers.

I believe that this group represented several smaller family groups. I was feeling very blessed as I was witnessing this spectacle. These are incredible birds, a whole lot smarter than they are generally given credit for, and turkeys tend to be very good mothers, and formidable foes when chasing predators away from their brood.

Part of what is incredible to me is that we might never have seen this had our riding mower not broken down, as normally this grass is kept considerably shorter, which would have left them with far less to forage, and likely, would have kept them deeper in the woods.

Enjoy!

thanks for sharing this, I was hoping you would, they certainly looked very content with the food in your yard, great reason to not keep the grass cut, guess that mower did you a big favour xx

Lolol, no doubt!

I'm not sure why, but I'm just now seeing your comment, but I agree, we invite more wildlife when we leave part of our pasture unmowed.

Not to mention the multitude of benefits for fireflies, bees, wild rabbits and ground-nesting birds.

Of course, this season, that includes the bulk of it! ;-)
