WWI Armistice centenary.

Reading pieces about the end of WWI and looking at the restored films that Peter Jackson did and some colourised photographs just makes me incredibly sad and angry. That particular war was just so awful, as was the second one. And both of them can trace their origins to the veneration of the nation-state. WWI in particular was the result of the same sort of economic nationalism that has become resurgent in recent years.

Terrible war things are happening in Yemen as we speak.

The 100 years has seen amazing wonders and advances that improve people's lives, as well as unspeakable horrors that continue to this day. Tailwinds and headwinds.

Even if there is nothing we individually can do, I feel we must take note, we must pay attention. Fight darkness with light.

Markets, trade, and a globalised, cosmopolitan world are not just the long-standing liberal vision, they are the path to peace.

The mutual thank-you of the market is a much more humane and prosperous way to live than the mutual fuck-you of barriers to trade and migration.
