A personal take on insight and its usefulness in problem solving

in #writing7 years ago

What insight? Many people will have different definitions and examples. This isn't about what other people have to say about insight. This is my personal take based on my personal experience. To me insight is a way of perceiving differently. Let's say a 10 months old kid gets a piece of real money (AKA Gold). Kid perceives it as a hard shiny object with a specific color. It'll be just a another thing for the 10 months old. Give it to a 10 year old and the it's perceived differently. 10 year old understands that what he has is valuable and stores it safely. But that knowledge is still limited. Give the same piece of gold to a gold dealer and perceives it much differently.

Same can be said about a medical report. Different people perceive different amount of things from the report. A technical analyst can look at a stock/crypto chart and make so many predictions. How? The factor that make the difference is insight. When you have insight you can handle things better.

"If you get involved in any kind of problem-solving in depth on almost anything, it's surprisingly similar to problem-solving anything else." - Stanley Kubrick

The above quote resonate with me a lot. When you dig deep into a problem it all simplifies into a massive web of cause and effect. Seeing this cause and effect is the insight. See it better and your have better insight and with enough insight you can predict outcomes. Everything has a context. Everything is affected by so many other things. The ability to see these things gives a person a better understanding of things. Understanding leads to mastery and control.

Lots of discoveries in astronomy has been done by simply reading charts and reports. If you look at the financial world there are many people like the people from The Big Short, Porter Stansbery, Doug Casey who saw market crashes coming. They saw it because they looked into matters and dissected them.

"A perfect plan doesn't mean having everything go within expectations. A perfect plan is achieved when it has the plasticity needed to flexibly deal with troubles." - Makishima Shougo

Most people want those perfect plans with perfect execution. The communism is built on the fallacy that everything can be planned. But reality doesn't exist fixed in a vacuum. A so called perfect plan is always a house of cards. If one part goes wrong, everything falls apart. It happens with the lives of many people. They loose a job or a person or some money and they are devastated.

But if you have the insight to realize the elements involved in your current condition like a programmer looking for bugs or a filmmaker trying to figure out how to capture a difficult scene, then you can adapt and change. When you change the course of your actions accordingly the outcome will also change. This flexibility can make you invulnerable.

The imperfect becomes whole.
How true that is!
To become whole and
Return to the Source,
One must ever be in accord
With nature.
There is nothing in the world
So weak as water,
Nor anything strong enough
To overcome it.
The person of great wisdom
Is like water which,
Though benefiting all things,
Never strives.

— Lao-tzu (On a personal note: I've always loved the air and what it means to damage it. Even with nukes you can hardly damage much of the air. But a storm can carry the energy of hundreds of nuclear weapons. So I've had my own version of the above quote with air replacing the warter)

Zen teachings put a great emphasis on this understanding the moment had having flexibility while free from arbitrary notions. Human kind haven't spent enough time discussing spirituality/metaphysics. The usable vocabulary can be very limited and subjective. Personally I define the enhanced higher level perception as insight and processing the gained knowledge as intuition. The two are tightly linked. Figuring out/perceiving the used encryption is insight. Decryption part is the intuition. You can't really separate the two. It's a yin-yang connection. At least that's my take on it.
