My Perspective: "The World is too Loud. We really need a New One."

in #writing8 years ago

For the record, of all the nagging and scolding that I got, my most favorite and probably the best one, came from my professor when I was in College. What happened prior to that was this: She left our class with seat works to answer and long notes to copy on the whiteboard since she would be attending a meeting at the dean's office. She came back after good long two hours and what she saw was a mess. The classroom was so noisy and messy with my classmates playing and making fun around.

"Do you see this?" she asked us while holding a bottled water in her hand. "When I shake this bottle full of water, you can hear minimal noise. But when there is lesser water inside," she says as she pours the contents, "the noise you can hear is much louder." We all fell silent. All that was left to hear is the cacophony coming from the half-full bottled water that my teacher shook.

"Most often, the silent are those who are brilliant, thinking and doing. Their minds are so full of ideas. They are so engaged and engrossed on what they do that they only speak when their opinion is needed and fundamental. However, the loud are those who keep on complaining and saying things that make little or no sense at all."

This wasn't her words in verbatim, but somehow this encapsulates the thought. By now, you must have understood why I like this rant best. It is an the insightful metaphor, unlike the usual rants which are annoying, discouraging and repetitive by nature.

True as it may be, the world that we live in is loud with cries, protest, opinions, comments and complaints. We are in the era wherein information has become free and unlimited. Just type whatever it is that you want to know and boom! There goes your answer. We are made aware of how bad things are - the climate being moody and unpredictable, the environment losing its balance and nearing degradation, the nations of the world grouping and turning against each other to push their interest, the government losing its hold in implementing and respecting its Constitution and the people radically challenging morality and human nature.

The world is loud and if you still disagree with me, try eavesdropping. Pseudo-critics are almost everywhere. They are people who are too quick to judge and comment, as if they know the entire story of how things came into being. They discuss with citation to facts and figures, but their arguments come off as fallaciesnor are off-tangents. They limig their remarks and rationales on their own perspective. They see the world in dichotomies, in blacks and whites, when in fact there are shades of gray and the entire color when that colors life.

The world is loud and if you need more proof, try researching. Research the probability of promises being the major causes of heartaches and mistrusts because they were not actualized nor acted upon. Research the number of bombs detonated to end innocent lives and fight for causes which are exclusively righteous and just for leftists and rightists. Research on the various theories and principles from different fields of knowledge and discover how they subtly contradict with one another, resulting to trade-offs. Why not meet half-way? Research on how people, who trample others down, boast on their own success, as if success is measured on power, money and fame and not on life satisfaction.

The world is too loud. Too loud that people sought the shelter of cafes, mountains or obscure corners to enjoy a piece of peace. Too loud that when silence comes, it is bethought as an apparition, a wonder, a luxury.

Communication, the very mechanism that is supposed to unite us, is breaking us all apart. Verbal communication seemingly loses its honor because the semantics and syntax are paid more attention rather than the very act of understanding its essence and walking the talk. Non-verbal communication is misunderstood and questioned because of too much reading between the lines when in reality, there are no lines to begin with.

The Earth can bear so much loudness, but we, inhabitants, cannot. Let us convert this kind of loudness into something more productive and beautiful. Let us fill the world with discussions of how's and solutions instead of just facts and information. Let's fill the world with understanding and respect to the things that we can modify and the things that we have to accept because they are permanent. Let us fill the world with love and raise it up as our universal language.

Soon, the world would silence itself not because it is empty, but because it is full.....

There is a twilight zone episode based on this with Buster Keaton.

I long for the day those screaming people realize,
Just because you say it LOUDER, doesn't make it more TRUE.

“Those who know don’t talk. Those who talk don’t know. Close your mouth, block off your senses, blunt your sharpness, untie your knots, soften your glare, settle your dust. This is the primal identity. Be like the Tao. It can’t be approached or withdrawn from, benefited or harmed, honored or brought into disgrace. It gives itself up continually. That is why it endures.”
― Lao Tzu

Thoughts being kept conveys more meaning. :)

Totally agree! I'm always more excited to hear what someone has to say when I can see them thinking about what to say before actually speaking. Usually I'm in for a treat! :)
