RPG’s – relict of the past or an unexplored territory

Welcome to the shadow world, where at every step you have to track the location of your shadow as every moment of inattention will cost you to lose it forever. But before I let you go through the gates of darkness and get to know the true secrets of the RPG world, I need you to think deeply of why you are here. The path leading to uncharted territory is only for the bravest and most demanding seekers. Are you sure you want continue this expedition? Once you've crossed the gate an empty land appeared. The sterile earth was drawn in every possible direction with nothing besides a burnt sun above. The place where you stood was full of emptiness and in the depths of your heart you felt cheated. Is this the famous land of shadows? Death here is possible at most from boredom – you said to yourself. Once you have thought about returning and abandoning this topic, you have noticed two things. The first one was the lack of the gate through which you got here and the other was a strange feeling in your right leg. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw a 20 centimetre figure climbing up your leg. It had a characteristic red pointed hat and similar looking nose. There was a smile on its face, and its cheeks were the color of ripening raspberries. "Sure, a drunken dwarf, that’s the last thing I needed" you thought.

My dwarf, could you tell me why is it so empty here? Where's your house? Where is this land of milk and honey I was promised? And could you get off my leg?

The newly encountered companion looked into your eyes and jumped back on the ground.

I apologize the most, for a long time there was no living soul here, and as soon as I saw you I felt so happy I had to hug you. It’s empty here for a long, long time - when the land was abandoned by the last thinkers everything turned into ruins, including my home.

Thinkers? Who are they?

Those are people with amazing imagination. People who can change their environment by force of will. Some use magic, others use different technology. They create the seas, move mountains, save the princess who are trapped in the tower and some even enslave those princesses. Are you a thinker?

No. I mean I don’t know. How do you become a one ?

It’s simple – all you have to do is imagine what you want. In the beginning it is easy so give it a try. But be cautious the further you go the more you have to remember and you’ll have to apply to the rules you created.

Now that you think of it, it became quite logical. Applying to the rules that you’d made – it may be difficult in the long run but why not give it a try. Once more you look around you. Nothing here, not even a proper house for the dwarf. That’s it ! You’ve imagined a big-ass tree with wooden doors near the ground and some fancy looking windows every 2m. As you thought more of this image the ground began to shake and the dwarf jumped back on your trousers. Within couple of seconds a small tree started to grow from the soil. As you looked at it, it began to grow faster and faster forcing you to step away from it. You felt shock and proud at the same time. What was standing before you was the exact same house as you imagined.

I’ve got the power! – you shouted

I’ve got a house! – dwarf shouted

That’s how it all started.

So is the RPG a relic of the past ?

In my opinion yes it is, but a bloody hell good one. Nowadays people forget about the power of imagination and most likely if they want some creative plays the just look for video games. It is a shame in my opinion as most video games don’t give you even a little fraction of what you can get from RPGs. So what is that advantage I’m talking about ? Referring to the little introduction earlier RPGs force you to imagine what you’re doing. While playing videogames there’s mostly a strict story you must complete and even if the dev made a ton of different content it is possible to play the game in the same way again. You do not have this option in RPG’s – every scenario is different and unique as it depends on what you mood is, what you did earlier and a bazillion other things. The only thing that enslaves you is your own imagination. And as you play more it becomes extremely easy to use it.

If you ever felt disappointed with the option that were given to you in a game, if you found other interesting ways to solve some mysteries and they didn’t apply in your game I think it is about time for you to get interest in RPGs. In the following articles I will write about all the things you need to know, have to start a game. In the end it is worth mentioning that typical RPGs are played in face to face meeting but in the internet time there are many services which you can you to play online!
