What's Lost is Lost and Gone Forever [original short story fiction]

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

This is a short story of love found and lost. And regret.

This is a submission for @steemfluencer's writing challenge, task #7.

In this challenge, we are given a small segment of dialogue and asked to expand it out with the topic of 'unrequited love'. I have tweaked the dialogue somewhat to fit my story, but left the intent intact.

What's Lost is Lost and Gone Forever

Adam woke up suddenly, his heart racing. He had been dreaming of something...something that danced just out of reach now, in the way that dreams do in the fumbling heavy-handedness of the conscious.

"Charles, are we still in the hospital?" His voice was a croak, and from where he lay on his back, weak and bedridden under a burden of hospital blankets and needles and bandages, he could only see the ceiling. But he knew his best friend, Charles, was in the room with him.

"Yes, sir, after my last story you fell asleep."

I like the perspective you took on this one, how the mistakes of one bad decision can haunt you for the rest of your life.

Thanks! It's something we've talked about before. You can spend your whole life trying to do the right thing, making good decisions and setting yourself up well to live a good life, but one wrong move can destroy it all in a moment.

You are so talented.

I know I should comment on the story, but the words I come up with aren't enough.

Even the love challenge ended this way!

💚

Thanks so much for reading. I'm always glad to see your comments come up on my stories!
