When Roger went down for breakfast the next morning his father was busy poring over city maps. He had woken up late and barely had time to eat before rushing out the door for school, “Roger, remember you’re not off the hook with me yet, so stay out of trouble. And don’t go near that fountain without talking to me first, and straight home after school, okay?” his father said peering at him over the rims of his reading glasses.
“Yeah, okay Dad,” Roger replied halfheartedly. Now that his father knew everything, and had confiscated the fountain key, Roger felt tired. The energy that he had needed to deal with this crisis
on his own was no longer available. Adrenaline let down was the best way to describe it. Joey was waiting for him.
“Hey Dude, did you see the news last night?” Joey asked, excitedly, “I guess we know what our next wish needs to be about, huh?”
Roger thought about his answer then decided there was no easy way to tell Joey, “My Dad has the key, but it’s cool. He was waiting for me with the journal when I got home last night. I told him everything. I feel a lot better. He’s home trying to work out what uncle McCreepy’s plan may be.”
“So your Dad is joining the order? Cool, wish my Dad would understand,” Joey said.
“About that, my Dad said he’d give you guys until tomorrow to tell your parents, then he’s calling them. Sorry,” Roger apologized.
Joey thought about it, “That’s okay, I was about ready to tell them anyway. This stuff is getting a little heavy.”
They met Thomas and Leslie sitting on a bench in the park and filled them in on the latest details. As they were leaving the park the black limousine pulled up to the curb. The rear window rolled down, “Roger, may I have a word with you in private?” it was Benedict.
“You guys go ahead I’ll catch up,” Roger said.
Joey looked at the limousine darkly, “I don’t think it’s a good idea.”
“It’ll be okay. I still have twenty-four hours. Besides, even my uncle’s not crazy enough to try something in broad daylight.”
Roger walked over to the waiting car as his friends watched. The door opened, “Sit with me, we have some business to discuss,” his uncle climbed out and Roger reluctantly slid in. Benedict tipped his hat to the remaining members of the order and climbed in shutting the door, “Driver, take us to the house!”
Roger’s friends watched speechless as the limousine carrying their leader pulled away from the curb and sped off up the road and out of sight.
Roger was scared, “Where are you taking me? I thought I had twenty-four hours!”
“Oh, you do, you do. I don’t change deadlines, just tactics.” His uncle snarled.
Roger turned to his left and found Mayor Wish huddling against his door trying to hide behind his briefcase.
“Calm down you idiot, he’s just a boy! Besides he’s already seen us together in the park,” Benedict snarled. Roger turned to face his uncle, Benedict continued, “Surprised? Oh yes, I knew it was you. I dare say if I had the eyes your father stole from me I would have been looking right at you.” Benedict Pine laughed maniacally.
Joey rolled after the departing limousine, “Hey, you. Come back here, scumsucker. We had twenty-four hours this isn’t part of the deal!”
“Save your breath,” Leslie advised, “you’re going to need it. Come on we have to get Roger’s Dad.”
She grabbed her cell phone out of her backpack and dialed it as she ran.
James answered on the second ring, “Hello? What? He did what? Why did you let him get into the car? Where are you now? No! Stay right there, I’ll pick you up,” he hung up the phone and turned to his wife, “Okay, no freaking out, promise?”
She had never seen him like this, “I promise, what is it?”
“Roger’s been picked up by Benedict in his limo. I’m going to try to figure out where they went. I need you to stay here and wait in case they call or come here looking for that.” He pointed to the key-box, “hide it in the freezer, and lock the door behind me!”
“ They might be coming here and you’re leaving me to…”
“No freaking out, you promised.” She regained control and James picked up his cell phone and dove through the garage door. He was suddenly glad of the fact that Wishful only had one cop as he broke seventy on the way to town-square. The kids were waiting right where they said they would be, he screeched to a halt. Thomas was already holding Joey and Leslie had folded his wheelchair ready for
storage. He hit the back door button, thanked God for minivans and set the chair into the back as the three kids buckled their seatbelts in record time.
