Cigarettes and memories, a short story and thoughts
The smoke burns your nostrils but somehow it is also appealing. It is one of those things you know you should keep away from, it is not good for you. There is something with adults in a child's eyes.. Something that makes it feel ''cool'' to try all of those forbidden things.
Why does adulthood has such a strong control over childhood, why does every kid wants to be a grown up already? Do the grownup things, the ones that are restricted. It is how you see it, children feel like parents restrict them, they feel like becoming an adult would result in them being happy and free. We try to act grownup, to become adults before our time and the lost memories of childhood stay behind reminding us of happier times.
Dad smokes! I want to, too. If he can buy cigarettes, why can't I? I can not wait to be an adult when you won't be able to say a thing to me, I can not wait to be an adult and have my own house.
But that day comes and leaving home turns out to be harder than anticipated, adult life is more filled of rules than a child's ever was . I wish I would have never longed to grow up faster because truth to be told, childhood is when we have the most freedom.
Here is a 5 minute writing prompt by @mariannewest that I participated in with the top story
I had asthma as a child. It was horrible, my nose would run every day and because of the frequent nose-blows I would also have nose-bleeds daily. In my class, I had a carpet corner where everybody knew I would go and lay down during at least one of the lessons. It is funny, I remember how the ''appropriete method'' of stopping nosebleeds would change with years. First it was ''lay down'' then it turned out laying down was dangerous because you coul accidently swallow the blood and choke on it. They told me to put napkins in my nose after that. Then it was determined that napkins in my nose for such frequent occasions could make my nostrils permenantly bigger. Yes :D. Then I was told to lean back and after that to put something cold on various different places of my head.
My point is, even the nurses have no clue about some simple things. I had to find my own way of bleeding properly. I once went to a doctor who was supposed to burn the inside of my nose so it did not bleed anymore. He did one nostril but was kicking and screaming when he tried to do the second one. Never got that done. When my nose bleeds I have t blow it. If I do not, the nosebleed never stops.
Why this goes hand in hand with cigarettes you may ask? As a person having asthma my nosebleeds went hand in hand with it and cigarettes were not good for my breething ways. My moms second husband smoked like a chimney and for some reason, I enjoyed how the smoke smelled. I knew it was bad for you but when I cought the smoke it seemed somehow appealing. Today I hate cigarettes and their smoke, they make me cough, that is the only thing that has gotten worse since my childhood, everything else has mostly stopped.
My asthma is dorman, I do not carry an inhaler anymore. I do not have a lot of running nose situations and my nose bleeds maybe once or twice in a long while. The hell of the grips of illness is behind me and it miraculasly stopped just when I was around ten years old. It could not have been medicine, I didn't use any unless absolutely necessary. However, my mom did me give some chocolate vitamins and ''natural capsules''. Those that a seller sells from door to door. My mom had her own dealer :D Oh, and I also spent summers on tropical Canary islands, that was supposed to halp as the climate there was the best for asthma patients.
I do not know what changed but life is easy for me on the front of sicknesses and illnesses. I go down with the flue once a year tops, I have a little bit of asthma coughs in Autumns or Springtime once in a while. I have to drink water, little by little to stop it.
As for cigarettes, there was a time when I tried them and smoked every time I went out for a party but I never was reeled in by them. One thing I can tell you in, never tell your kid that they can not do it, they are going to want it more. My mom never told me I could not smoke, she just said that it was bad for me. And even though the smell of smoke was somewhat appealing, I went through my childhood and my teens mostly considering smoking a horrible habit and I am happy I did because I have seen so many teenagers getting hooked early and not being able to let go.
Hope this gave you a little bit of brain food! :)
Best wishes, now, tomorrow an forever,
Linda
Oh, that is a lot to go through for a child!! And you are so right! We really are free when we are kids - but some adults also have learned to be free in their life and follow their bliss.
I think learning how to enjoy every part of life is so important and we, as a society, have to figure out how to be fairer in our resource distribution that life can have less worries for everyone...
Yeah, but at least, surprisingly, nobody laughed about my condition back then. I was a frail child.
Yeah, I am learning to embrace the world as well, it was a little confusing there when I stepped from the naive child into the adult part but I had some things figured tout there as well. I have found freedom on steemit, I love doing what I do here and it makes me happy :)
I am glad that you are happy here on steemit. You really have helped me a lot when I first got onto this platform. I wished I could feel more comfortable on chainbb and do more with mapsters - but I haven't figured it out yet :(
I do not use it that much either, it seems clunkier to me and a little too much to deal with, I only use the discord part of MAP at this point, vote when there is something to vote on and that kind of stuff
me too. Every time I go onto the Chainbb platform, I am lost. Maybe people who were on reddit are more used to it - but I am not one of them. Oh well...
Yeah, I am lost, too there, unfortunately
I'm glad that you were able to heal. What a horrible thing to be exposed to cigarette smoke that caused asthma. It is true that we try things because adults modeling life are doing it. You have gained a lot of wisdom and I'm also happy that you have gained your health back.
Oh, the asthma wasn't caused by cigarettes, it is just not good to be around smokers when you have asthma, you already have trouble with your breathing ways and cigarettes do not help, at all.
You can never lose asthma, it an illness forever, but the lucky ones, like me, get it to become dormant. Then you can not feel it, there is just the tiny possibility for it ''waking up''
Thank you for explaining. The girl next to me at work was born with asthma. We work together in a call center and I often hear her having asthmatic fits. The air and the call center is not that clean apparently and it causes her much suffering. She has medication puffer and a breathing machine. I'm glad that yours is dormant.
Yeah, it is not a fun illness that you can never really lose. I was lucky as if I would still have the issues I had a s a child it would be horrible. I remember having to go to the hospital because I had snot in my body. They put a tube in my and sucked it out. When I woke up from the anesthetics, it was a rough day, I felt like I had a stick in my throat. Fun times.
I am sorry to hear that about your colleague, it is something I can relate to.
You did go through a lot as a child! I can't imagine that. I'm so glad you are able to control it now. My friend is an amazing woman like you! <3
Have a wonderful day/night.
Congrats on quitting! I quit a pack a day habit last year and haven't looked back.
Oh, I never smoked in the first place, just the occasional party cigarette.
That is amazing! Hope it keeps your health and wallet intact :) Cigarettes are very expensive in some countries.
Ideas, understandings, phrases, as well as valuable lessons. Speaking of cigarettes, I am a passive smoker, but after learning a lot about cigarettes, I stop now. It used to be a cigarette for me like a living companion, now my motto has changed that is, cigarettes kill you. And "Turn Off the Cigarette Before Your Cigarette Kills You" Regards @lindahas ;)
Glad to hear that you have thrown the habit away! I do not condemn people who smoke but I do think not smoking keeps you healthier and it is a great character builder, if you can drop the habit. There are, however other things that can mess with your health quite easily and we do not care about these
Thank you, when it comes to health threats is actually something that can happen, even in the circumstances of a high level of health care, but it is not our duty to think so, it is our duty to take care of things that are habitual to bring us to disease. Other health talk, crypto market seems also sick again, see the price of digital currency that fell rapidly. 😅 hope we can be good friends, I am from south east Asia that is Indonesia 🖐
Well, crypto market is like the ocean, the waves go up and they go down, things happen :D
Yeah, it is true, we should just take care of our bodies and not look for issues at every corner!
Strong woman
Amaizing :)
Thanks!
