SCP-3???: Their Faces Are Faceless (SCP-Wiki Fan Fiction)

in #writing6 years ago (edited)

Hi everyone... @lemony-cricket here with something a bit different today.

Some of you may have heard of the SCP Wiki. If you haven't, I have three things to say:

  1. I'm sorry,
  2. You're welcome, and
  3. I'm sorry again, because if you're like me, you're about to lose a few hours of your time.

If you don't feel like checking it out, here's the rundown: it's a wiki full of psychological horror fiction presenting itself as a repository of articles, records, protocols, transcripts, etc., describing some really weird shit and how to handle it, secretly, without the general public finding out and losing their heads.

Think Harry Potter's Improper Use of Magic Office meets the Weeping Angels of Doctor Who.

I've been an SCP fan for a long time, but I've never contributed as an author, and still don't really plan to for now. I feel like I can't really give enough time and attention to the details of the overall canon and lingo to write a truly SCP-worthy article. They also have a bunch of rules that I'd rather not risk breaking.

However... as I read a recent post by @NoNamesLeftToUse The Writer/Artist Himself, I was inspired. I found that the creature he was describing would fit perfectly in an SCP article.

I started writing this post as a comment on his post, but it got way too big and sort of took on a life of its own.

Enjoy then, if you wish, my SCP fan-fiction.

Item #: SCP-3???

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: At least three Class D personnel are required to observe each entrance to SCP-3???'s enclosure at all times, and civilians must not be permitted to enter.

Personnel assigned to enter SCP-3???'s enclosure for any reason are strongly cautioned to wear peripheral blinders at all times, and never to look it directly in the eyes under any circumstances.

No weaponry or other cautionary measures are necessary aside from the avoidance of direct or indirect eye contact. As long as these procedures are followed, SCP-3??? is not dangerous.

Description: SCP-3??? is a shadowy, ethereal female figure of superhuman size and relatively unknown appearance. Information gathered from survivors of direct observation is extremely limited for various reasons, some of which are explained further below.

SCP-3??? was discovered in early ██████ 20██ at the ███████ Zoo after multiple civilian casualties and is currently contained on-site.

Various civilians (especially before containment) as well as SCP Foundation personnel have occasionally found their way into the enclosure without adequate peripheral blinding and/or avoidance of eye contact. In each case, the subject has disappeared promptly from the enclosure.

After disappearing, the subject reappears, supine, exactly one minute later, in the exact centre of a shallow artificial pond (formerly a part of the █████████ exhibit) located ██ metres due south of SCP-3???'s enclosure. The subject is presented alive (NOTE: see Addendum 20██-A-01), unconscious, and apparently unharmed except that its face has disappeared entirely, and it is struggling to breathe. All ocular, nasal, and oral cavities are replaced with solid bone.

Addendum 20██-A-01: A single direct subject fatality was recorded in Incident I-3???-A-03, wherein an █████████ was occupying the artificial pond in the same location where the subject reappeared. Both the subject and the animal were instantaneously superimposed, then immediately killed as they were blown apart in the resultant explosion. This incident resulted in several civilian and animal casualties, as well as the permanent closure of the █████████ exhibit and increased intervention by the SCP Foundation in the zoo's administration. Class B amnestics were administered to all non-Foundation witnesses, an alternate explanation of the explosion was formed and delivered to the media, and an aerosolised calming agent was airdropped in the vicinity for several weeks.

In total, █ civilians and █ Class D personnel have died of asphyxia after eye contact with SCP-3???. As a result, in 20██, Emergency Procedure 3???-Delta-Iroquois was established and has been largely successful. All █ subjects from SCP-3???-related incidents since the establishment of this procedure (all of them Class D personnel) have been successfully stabilised after emergency tracheotomy.

Subsequently, these subjects (lacking eyes) remain permanently blind, and must receive both oxygen and food via tube. Their ability to hear is unaffected. They are able to communicate only through typing or other non-verbal methods. Interestingly, all subjects report the same olfactory hallucination-- a highly unbearable putrid smell, not unlike that of rotting flesh, but much more powerful-- which does not subside and in some cases even worsens over time.

Subjects invariably display extreme and sustained ████████ urges, apparently as a result of the hallucination, and subject movement must be fully restrained when not under direct supervision. Hourly administration of a Class B antipsychotic in combination with a Class C amnestic has been occasionally successful in treating these urges to the point where limited freedom of movement may be granted for communicative and ████████████ purposes.

A transcript is given below of one Mr. Edward ██████'s medical debrief after undergoing EP-3???-Delta-Iroquois. Mr. ██████ is providing his responses via a word processor, and they are reproduced in the transcript exactly as typed, with spelling and grammatical errors included.

TRANSCRIPT OF INCIDENT I-3???-C-07 MEDICAL DEBRIEF
LEVEL 3 SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED

Dr. Wei ███: Mr. ██████, here is a keyboard; can you type?

[Dr. ███ places the subject's hands on the keyboard.]

Mr. Edward ██████: yes thakn god pleas e████ ██

W█: Please just tell us how you are feeling.

E█: █ ████ ██ ███

W█: Please try to calm down, Mr. ██████. We are going to do
whatever we can to help you, I swear this to you. Please
just try and answer the questions for now.

E█: the smel l it is terrbile

W█: You are experiencing olfactory hallucinations?

E█: not halucinatign its realy ther it smels like deat hwors
    than you can imagin

W█: That is... impossible, sir. Your... your nose has gone.
It does not exist anymore. You have no nose, nor eyes,
nor mouth. You are breathing through a tube. Please try
    to relax.

E█: eplease just fkn ████ ██ just ███ ██ please pls

W█: I can't do that. Please, try to calm down. As I said, we
are doing everything we can to help you. Your wife is on
her way and she would like to see you.

E█: you dont undersnantd i cant tkae it anymore pls pls
    pls pls plsp lspls...

<transcript ends>

After the end of the transcript above, the subject continued typing "pls" indefinitely. Dr. ███, in violation of protocol, left the subject unattended momentarily to retrieve a Class C sedative. Unfortunately, upon his return, the subject had asphyxiated, apparently due to an ███████████ obstruction of the breathing tube. Dr. ███ attempted to resuscitate the subject for several minutes but was unsuccessful.

Dr. ███ has, as a result of this incident, been put on indefinite administrative leave pending a full investigation of Incident I-3???-C-07. 🍋

How to get an upvote from me today: How did you like it? Should I do more like this? Did you check out @NoNamesLeftToUse's post? (If not, go do it now!) Think I should probably never attempt to write in the SCP style again? All comments are welcome.

Sort:

This was awesome. Probably one of the most unique works of fiction I've seen on Steemit. ...and I'm not just saying that because you mentioned my name twice. I really enjoyed this.

Thank you so much. That means a lot. I was a bit nervous that you'd be upset that I just kinda took a piece of something you created and ran with it. I figured you'd understand, but my worry-brain wouldn't shut up.

I wasn't just mentioning you for no reason. If you hadn't made that art and written that story and posted it today, I would've never had this idea, and I'd have spent those 4 hours doing something completely different, and this whole thing would never have happened.

Weird.

I don't get upset when something I do inspires something else. This is considered loosely based and you gave me credit. Handled it perfectly. Well done.

I boosted your comment over on my blog to the top. Maybe the last remaining views I get from that post will trickle in here. Teamwork!

I like this because it caused emotions. Interest, fear, nervousness and sympathy. Great job redacting to leave the mind wondering...
Could be a very good format for SteemIt readers.
The introductory picture was a great hook, and thanks for a semi-comfortable ending.

I'm not sure I took so much comfort in the fact that the subject in question spent every remaining moment of his life begging for death... so much that he sprung at the first opportunity, even though he was told his wife was on her way.

Of course we know his wife was not on her way. She'd been detained, given a Class A amnestic, and reconditioned into a new identity as soon as friend Edward had met with his little misfortune... but hey, he didn't know that!

Keep in mind, he was alive for quite a while. Without a face. In incessant olfactory agony we cannot even begin to understand. Imagine a smell so bad you want to die. How terrible would that have to be?!

Yeah. There is nothing comforting about this. ;)

I like it. It seems real, like something copied from a redacted file of a secret
government program. I love spy stuff.

I like the way you make a horror story funny, removes some of the fear out of it. It's good.

Thanks! There's a whole world of this stuff (probably better written, too) over at SCP-Wiki!

Yeah I checked it out. The landing page was weird, really. There's a whole lot going on there.

I found SCP a good while back from some forum boards I frequent attached to a RPG called Unknown Armies by Atlas Games.
There used to be a player around our table who introduced us to it. He had also written some pieces for some expansions. A few years after that introduction I got my writing credit in the 2nd edition. They've just released the 3rd last April. Kickstarted the hell outta that thing!

Got a little off base there, but SCP is a great site to dig through, and what you've written here would easily fit along side much of the strange and maddening pieces there.

At the same time it reminds me of the 'Case Files' I used to write up for a character I played in Conspiracy X... that was another one that SCP could easily slide right into, or Con X directly into that!

amazing post bro

Did you read it though?

Amazing, I felt like I was watching a movie in my mind.
