PSA: Do NOT Send STEEM/SBD to @blacklist Account! It's an Insidious Blackmail Operation...

in #writing8 years ago (edited)

Massive shout out to @stellabelle who tipped me off about the scam going on perpetrated by the @blacklist account. You can click the image below in order to visit this account:

Basically what this account claims to do is place "black flags" on users accounts which is supposed to nullify all other bot votes for the user. Of course this is a complete fallacy and the user responsible for this account is trying to prey on un-educated new users for profits. The link in the profile pastebin.com/h1unSks2 contains the following false information:

@blacklist's Creed & Mission

The Steemit @Blacklist uses a range of metrics to determine who's a repeat offender of plagiarism, hate speech, bullying, ongoing power-abuse and so on. The Blacklist is computer-generated and is updated irregularly to make sure bad behaving accounts get a quick flag so that other upvote-bots can avoid upvoting the blacklisted accounts and simply skip to the next post. The @blacklist-project is a much wider and further stretching authority than any of the singular up or downvoting guilds currently running on steemit, it is also complimentary to current projects in the same genre which are to keep the steem-blockchain unattractive for scammers, spammers and miserable trolls who are caught bullying or go after steemians in a power-abusive behaviour and so forth and so on.

The @blacklist account is a very serious project who aim to grow over the years with supporting bots and guilds respecting the black flag as the black flag is computer-generated by a popular opinion from a wide range of always active members of the community.

There are one way to get off the blacklist once you are on it, and that is to change your behavior from evil to good over your next 40 posts. Once you have reached that number you must send 40 STEEM to the @blacklist account with "REVIEW" in the memo. Someone from our staff will then manually look at your blog within the next 24-48 hours and remove you from the list if your account now qualifies for it.

The Blacklist contains between 200-500 accounts at any given time. The list grows or shrinks depending on user behavior (1) and user-reaction (2).

@blacklist is a Scam Operation Masquerading as A Legitimate Service.

Whatever you do, do NOT send STEEM to @blacklist. The claims are bogus and the whole account exists from my perspective only to harrass STEEM users into coughing up their hard earned STEEM to get off of some made up list out of fear of blackmailing. Absolute garbage!

I'm fairly certain of the identity of the person behind this account. I have my own suggestions on how this can be handled. People who do this shouldn't have much of a reputation and probably shouldn't be earning anything on the platform.

What do you think?

Since i think klye is going to be skeptical on your conclusions, i wanted to mention that i came to the same conclusion as @ats-david, completely independently.

and we two don't usually agree on much.

EDIT to add -- also i wanted to mention that my original position, that people getting upset about asshole/blacklist flagging were being silly, has not changed. They can flag all day. they bought the SP, and they can vote how they want. Its when they ask for money to stop doing it that they cross the line for me.

What? We agree on a lot of things. We just don't always know it. :)

Approach everything with an open mind is the goal. Although sometimes I do have a hard time trying to understand all possible angles it seems what @ats-david was thinking resonated very similar to my own gut instinct.

To edit: I do think it is kind of silly how upset people get but at the same time I also understand the psychological aspect to it as well.. No one wants to be flagged or told that they suck basically. :)

The @blacklist account is something to keep eyes on for sure. Some shady Mafioso stuff there.

Please feel free to PM me on Steemit.chat David! I'd be interested in hearing your hypothesis.

I think I know just who it is as well. Also, there is more than 1 to my knowledge but I only know of 2. The 2 may be 1 tho, who knows.

Unfortunately not everyone is a good individual. :/

I really love the Paid to click for steem idea, pretty awesome

Was anyone so naive to fall for it?

Not to my knowledge yet. :)
