Hi everybody,

In my opinion, Labeling is how somebody make hypothetical statement based on outer appearance/action/word of someone without an further investigation. It can be perceiving as distorting oneself reality or could be a motivation drive. It might be from a friend calling somebody "rebel" because he/she have a punk-rock hair and cannot dress well, might be from parent's action/word that lack of guidance for the adolescent and less appreciated to how the adolescent could be/ want to be or might be from it's current society itself.

As a social creature, We do sometimes notice a feeling while we interact with people or just take a glance at someone we unconscious that generate a 'label' that result of appearance and action of what we look. Be amaze by looking at people at higher status and dictated by feeling when we look this outer layer being projected by other person. being ruled by just a 'word' that can be a invisible that do burden that hold our thought to evolved just because some people did 'label' a bad things to each individual in the past. although ' labelling ' not always bad, it's can be a form to motivate somebody to be a better self.

Starting when we are born, we do always guess based on feeling the person that we often see in our early life. Curiosity made us start learning in early life to able to start identify and observing everything that tend to be a potential value in life. Based on this trait we always developed, may be different as a result of influence from close relative within our early life. As we are grew up tend to acquiring new skills and begin to less sensitivity of observing as we start to turn inward and more gain value based on how others see us. This is the stage that is very important in adolescent to be able find something that can be a motivation to strive on-going life. One of the main role-part is how people is label us. "are we good ?" " what i could be?" "how my friends/parent looking at me?" these question might be an answered by ourselves automatically and unconsciously by how people we tend to be a close a relative's action and how they interact to society. This form of intention might be a crucial part during adolescence.

Adolescence is a malleable stage of character forming phase. Suffer from identity crisis, They tend to seek many information and often to take it seriously as an apprentice to would might they will be in the future. Even as little as character labeling in in adolescence can take a simple but powerful impact to character building.

The Bottom Line :

While there's so many label to determent while it's good or bad (aside from politic label) such as ; "bad","evil","criminal",stupid","nerd","genius","clever" and so on. Tell it to somebody (adolescence) repeatable and it will become what they are. creating some kind of illusory effectthat can be carried for the rest of his/her life. this character labeling is always been in our nature, whether been approved or disapproved. and it's a phenomenon that can be used for good or destructive purpose to one-self.

Its so true, we let labels define us, pigeon hole our thinking and we create these little boxes for ourselves and others and we take it so seriously that it only serves to divide us. Sure we have differences but they not there to be marked and say this where I stand, its just to be understood as how it influences you as a person.

Interesting article. Labels can be good, they can be bad, as you say, but they are still adhered to everyone. It also creates an "us vs them" mentality - for good and for bad...
