Her Thirties Part 45

We were sitting in The Grenadier restaurant in the middle of High Park—it’s Toronto’s version of Central Park, without the muggers.

Abe was telling me that the higher ups were puling the surveillance team watching Marilyn and me.

He said we were on our own now—at the mercy of her stalker.

I didn’t protest—I kind of figured it was coming. It was hard to justify ongoing protection on vague suspicions we were being followed.

I had seen a burly man lurking outside Marilyn’s apartment, but outside of that, I had no proof—nothing that Abe could go on.

Abe looked worried though and I felt sorry for him.

“Like I told ya—it could get dangerous. I do believe the girl’s in danger. Do you want to take that on?”

I sighed. “I think it’s past that point, Abe. I’ve fallen for her—big time. We’re in it together.”

“Well, since you mention that, Pal, I gotta tell you—this Doctor Lambert, the psychiatrist she’s seeing—he wants to meet you.”

“Fine. I’ve got no problem with that.”

‘That’s good, but do me a favor, will ya? Leave me outta it. If he asks if I’m involved, just say we’re friends—that’s all.”

I knew what Abe was getting at—he had been warned off Marilyn because her doctor feared he could interfere with her recovery.

But somehow the doctor must have suspected there was some collusion between Abe and me, and I warned Abe.

“He’s obviously drawn a line connecting me to you and Marilyn.”

“That’s because Marilyn told him about you—she met you because I happened to mention your class on the Swing Era.”

The pieces fell into place.

“So he figures you’re trying to get in through the back door?”

Abe nodded. “Right. As far as he’s concerned, all he needs to know is I’m keeping my professional distance from Marilyn as per his instructions. I think he’s afraid I could traumatize her or cause her to conjure up some false memories—something like that.”

“No worries—I’ll tell him you’ve been a good boy.”

Abe’s eyes crinkled. “Don’t tell him that—he ain’t stupid.”

“So, when do I see the doctor?”

“I suggested Wednesday at five—I know that’s your light day.”

I chuckled. “You never cease to amaze me, Abe.”

“C’mon,” he said, throwing two twenties on the table, “let’s go throw the football around.”

When we got out in the sunshine, I was glad we came. The sky was filled with huge white cumulus clouds and although it was March I peeled off my coat and Abe did the same. I couldn’t believe the biceps bulging beneath the sleeves of his tight red tee shirt.

“You must work out,” I said, pointing to his arms.

“Naw—back in university, but not lately.”

I suddenly felt very inadequate. Compared to Abe I was still a schoolboy. What help would I be fending off the burly man I saw lurking in the shadows?

Hmmmmmm.

Waiting for the next episode patiently. I wonder who the stalker is, probably some one from Marilyn's past (perhaps from the thirties)

Good reasoning - that would make sense - poor Scottie, he can't rely on Abe even for criminal background checks - come to think of it, neither can the government, lol

I have to wonder if poor Scottie is cut out for this protection lark!

I don't think so either - I think he'd like to protect Marilyn, but I think he really wants to possess her :)
