Her Thirties Part 44 I Inherit a Stalker

Sunday morning I slept in—or at least, tried to, but ended up lying in bed trying to make sense of my convoluted life.

I pictured myself trying to explain to Cam—or worse yet, Abe—how I got a preview of my soul mate as a dream girl I couldn’t exorcise from my mind.

But as crazy as that sounded, my experience was somehow inextricably tied into Marilyn’s.

Because of her, I was starting to think there was someone else inside me called Joey—and who was he anyway? Was he her lover from the past, or some kind of wish fulfillment of my subconscious to justify her wild claim of being from the Thirties?

But the damnable thing about it—I couldn’t recall if she actually claimed to be from the Thirties. Did I draw that connection?

My head was starting to hurt, and I hadn’t even got out of bed. This was too much for me to deal with all at once, so I decided to just take things moment by moment and see where they led.

At that point, the phone rang.

“Hey Pal. Hope I didn’t wake you.”

How could Abe be so damned happy so early in the morning—was he always that way?

“Hi Abe—I was up, just lying here taking my time getting out of bed.”

“Ah, the joys of bachelorhood—when you get married all that will change.”

“I guess you’re right.”

Abe’s voice changed to a more sober note. “I’d like to drop by and touch base, Scott. Actually, it’s a beautiful day out—what do you say we grab some brunch and talk—maybe toss the pigskin around a bit?”

“Sure—sounds good. What time is it?”

“Just past ten. How’d it be if I drop by around eleven and we drive out to High Park? We can get a bite to eat in the restaurant there and throw the football on one of the sports fields.”

Sounds good. I’ll see you at eleven.”

Abe showed up early as I expected he would, and of course, insisted we take my Camaro.

I let him drive and he took the Lakeshore—the scenic route. He certainly didn’t push the pedal to the metal—he was taking it slow and easy, savoring the drive.

“I’ve got a buyer for your wheels,” he said casually.

“Already?” I was dumbfounded.

“Yeah, the guy’s a dealer and I think he might have an interesting proposition for you.”

“What kind of proposition?”

“I’ll let him explain—I don’t get into that stuff.”

My curiosity was piqued, but I knew it was useless to press Abe for details he didn’t want to give.

I leaned back and enjoyed the drive. There were fair weather clouds piling up above the lake and a slight breeze. The temperature felt like it was around sixty degrees.

It was warm and quiet in the park. We got a table by the window where we could look out at Grenadier Pond. Some of the trees looked like they were already starting to bud.

“Nice and peaceful here,” Abe smiled, “I brought Mitzy here on our first date.”

“How long have you two been married?”

“Coming up five years in October—but we aren’t going to have a fancy do at the Palais Royale, I can assure you. Maybe just a quiet candlelight dinner for two.”

“I’d prefer that myself. Cam’s a different kettle of fish from me—he’s sentimental, because we grew up together—but apart from that, we don’t have much in common.”

“You’re a real common man, eh Scott? I mean, apart from your Camaro ZL1 out in the parking lot there.” His eyes crinkled.

“Okay, I surrender. Buying that was a mistake. I think I bought it for Sam, more than me.”

“So, your next purchase should be for Marilyn, I take it?”

“Ha-ha. The way my mind works, that’s probably a safe bet.”

Our orders came and we dug into the country breakfast—both of us suddenly hungry smelling the bacon and eggs. But after a minute or two, Abe made his gambit, as I knew he would.

“You know the Sarge won’t sign off on any more overnight surveillance, unless as he says, there’s a credible threat”.

“So, we’re on our own?”

“Marilyn’s on her own, Pal—what you choose to do about that is up to you.”

“As if I’d abandon her now—that’s not going to happen, Abe.”

I knew in my head I couldn’t protect her, but my heart told me I’d die trying if it came to that.
