Her Thirties Part 104

Abe had shown up Saturday morning as the harbinger of bad news informing us that Charlie was planning another attack on Marilyn.

My natural protective instincts clicked in and I volunteered to be with her when Charlie made his move—not that I could defend against him, but I wanted to be there as moral support.

Charlie didn’t carry a gun apparently, but he liked to use a big stick—I only hoped Abe would carry a bigger one

We spent the rest of the day endlessly talking about Charlie and speculating on when he’d make his move.

We concluded that the earliest he’d try would be Tuesday since the shop was closed Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

I planned to cancel my afternoon lecture and spend the rest of the day with Marilyn trying to keep her calm and adding another set of eyes to keep lookout for anything suspicious.

It probably wasn’t the best way to spend our Saturday because we exhausted ourselves obsessing about every possible threat.

I convinced Marilyn to let me sleep over again and she seemed relieved but still worried about appearances.

In the end, practicality won out and we ate a quiet supper and watched Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments on TV.

Marilyn insisted, however, that she spend Easter Sunday with Ella—taking her to mass at the Cathedral, and I agreed to accompany them and treat them to brunch afterwards.

Easter Sunday dawned bright and sunny, looking more like mid May than early April.

We picked up Ella at her home and drove to the cathedral for the eleven a.m. high mass.

I had never seen so many Easter bonnets in one place and that and the pomp and circumstance of a cathedral high mass overwhelmed me.

Afterwards, we drove to Le Petit Dejeuner for Sunday brunch and spent a delightful hour dining and conversing with Ella.

After brunch, Marilyn tried to coax Ella to come back to her apartment, but she surprised us by saying she had invited Harry Greenspan to Sunday dinner.

Marilyn’s eyes were twinkling but she refrained from teasing Ella and after we dropped her at her home, we both agreed that we were happy that she and Harry seemed to hit it off.

But Ella’s sudden change of plans left us with nothing scheduled, and since it was a beautiful day, we decided to go for a drive.

“So where should we head,” I asked Marilyn, “east or west?”

She didn’t hesitate. “Go east, Joey—let’s go to our favorite place.”

I knew instantly what she meant—Scarborough Bluffs—but it had both joyful and horrific memories for me.

It was the special place where Marilyn and I would light a fire and lie together under the stars.

But it was also the place where I leapt to my death in another time and another world.

Marilyn read my thoughts, and consoled me.

“We need to do this, Joey—put that terrible time behind us—like I did going back to Havelock Street. If we don’t, it will always haunt us.”

I nodded and squeezed her hand. She was right. We had to break with the past in order to go forward, and that meant confronting my fears.

But I had no idea how I’d react standing on that narrow peninsula of cliff, three hundred feet above the lake.

But I was determined to find out.

Oh dear, what if Charlie is at the bluffs! He could be following them, (or one of his cronies) I wonder if Scott will suffer any traumatic emotional episodes like Marilyn did. Would Marilyn be strong enough to handle it?

That's what I was thinking - I suspect she's mentally and emotionally tougher than him - these strong women and weak men LOL

Could Charlie be waiting at the bluffs. Perhaps follow them there:) Methinks.

hmm... I'll have to consult my characters - interesting possibility
