The day I will never forget
I woke up feeling bitter and disappointed. First I had overslept and after all attempts to get me up had failed, my mother poured some water over me to wake me up finally.

Secondly, my fingers were numb but the one thousand naira note I had received as a present in my dream and which I squeezed tightly in my hand was not there. I felt this was not going to be a good day.
I was still in the bathroom when Daniel, my friend called. We usually walked together and got to school just a few minutes to eight already. I rushed out of the bathroom, struggled into my school uniform and then, alas! I could could not find one of my sandals. I was still scattering things about in my room looking for it when my mother called that my baby brother was playing with one of my sandals in the parlour. Breakfast was ready but in my attempt to rush the food, I burnt my tongue because the tea was hot. I spat out piece of bread in my mouth, snatched my bag and rushed out, almost colliding with a neighbour. But there was no need rushing because in the distance, the bell was already tolling.
As I passed through the gate, the teacher on duty called me. I was late and moreover, I did not comb my hair. I had to serve double punishment. During the long break, I divided my time between clearing the weeds around the office and watering the flowers on the compound. So, I could not go to the canteen and even if I had gone, I could not have bought anything because in my haste, I had forgotten the two hundred naira which my mother gave me at home.
In class, I could not understand what the teacher was teaching. I was hungry and tired. I scored the first zero in my life in mathematics that day. I wept bitterly and could not eat during lunch break. I sat alone in the classroom. Some friends came to call me for a ball game but I pretended to be asleep and they left me alone. I was still not myself when the afternoon session began.
We were in the middle of a science lesson when the principal sent for me. Fear and anxiety gripped me. "What have I done again? ", I asked myself. There were two gentlemen with the principal in his office and I was surprised when, unlike his usual Stern and harsh manner, he received me warmly and introduced me to the gentlemen. The older of the two got up and Shook hands with me, patted me at the back and congratulated me. I could not understand what was going on but the principal soon let the cat out of the bag. The older of the two gentlemen was the manager of a leading company in the area. The previous term, the company had organised an essay competition for the local schools and my essay was picked as the best. I had won the first prize of two hundred thousand naira and in addition I won a scholarship from the company, for my secondary education.

When the principal announced the good news to all the pupils, I felt as if I was floating in the air with my head growing bigger and bigger. The bitterness, dissapointment, sorrow and weeping which had followed from the morning just dissappeared. It was my happiest day. Before I got home, the news had already reached to my mother and there were a lot of people waiting in our house to congratulate me.

When my father returned from work, the whole thing turned into a joyful celebration. It was indeed, a day that would remain evergreen in my mind.
