How do you perceive your ideal self in the technological future? A DeepThink ChallengesteemCreated with Sketch.

I am a (Star) Trekkie! I have watched every episode of every series of Star Trek The Next Generation and Star Trek Voyager at least 4 times! Those of us who are also Trekkies will, I'm sure, relate very well to much of what I am about to write. Star Trek is to me one of the best examples of how a good moral compass and ideology can take us into a highly technological future with grace and humanity. Our humanity is what defines us. What our humanity is exactly is quite a difficult question to answer, so for now I would like to say that it is Our Humanity that should be honoured as one of the guiding pillars for all our technological advancements.

One of the most significant differences between the Star Trek future and our current paradigm is that Earth is a money-less society. This is the golden nugget really. What you will find, time and time again, is that many of the fundamental advances made in the 'Golden Age' Future go totally against the systems of capitalism, and power obtained through control and manipulation of money. Once you remove money totally from society and State we can then all benefit and be uplifted by technology instead of manipulated and controlled by it.

What also stands out to me in the Star Trek Future is their moral code, and their great respect and understanding of it. The moral fiber of planet Earth is in good shape and they have very few problems compared with the myriad of issues we face today. Whilst they have incredible technology both on their planets and Space Ships, they do not indiscriminately and ubiquitously monitor everything. There is very little crime, drug problems, poverty etc and in general people can be trusted. Even on a battle ship people's movements (whilst trackable) are not actively tracked or looked at except for in exceptional circumstances. There is a very high respect to individual privacy and plenty of room for freedom of expression.

Society is still hierarchical, but in a different way than today. Whilst i do believe in decentralized power, i am also pragmatic and realise that there are times when it is needed. When a power structure has integrity and truly has the best interests of the people at heart, then some centralization of power can be a great thing.

So with all that said, i can now answer the question of what technical advancements i would like to see. I will list them in order of importance, with the most important first.

Replicators
Anyone who's watched Star Trek knows about the replicators! These are amazing machines that can make pretty much anything out of thin air (using power). They take this to the extreme by also replicating food. Whilst i don't like the idea of that, i can see how it will be a great option for emergency situations or long distance travel. Other than that, I can see the machines being a great liberator and cornerstone in removing the shackles and burdens of having to find money to pay for products and consumerism. These machines would knock capitalism on its foundational head! Hence we will never see them until money ceases to be a cornerstone of society. We can make great strides to removing poverty when we all have equal access to resources, products, water, power and food.

Holodecks

The holodecks are like next generation VR goggles. On a holodeck you can enter any kind of world or space that is artificially generated by computer holograms. They are fully interactive to the extent that you can eat, drink and partake in just about any activity that you would in the real world. These holodecks can be used for any number of uses such as recreation, problem solving, technological development, education etc. As a gadget of the future, I think im all in favor of holodecks. One of the other nice features is that several people can interact with each other and are not isolated or cut off from the environment .. instead, you are immersed in a new one!

Transporters

Instant travel to almost anywhere on the planet or beyond... with no carbon footprint or damage to the environment. This is a no brainer! i can't say that we'll have that option in just 100 years, but you never know! They are working on it and making some progress!

Universal Translators

What better way to foster global Communication and understanding then to be able to talk totally naturally to anyone and in any language. The universal translator already almost exists so this one is sure to be make even more progress in 100 years. This device IS almost an implant (it lives in the ear canal), and this is one implant that under certain circumstances, I would probably be comfortable with. It isn't a tracking device! I think its pretty obvious how this technology could build bridges between so many cultures and international affairs.

Com Badge

Isn't it interesting how people don't have embedded microchips in the Star Trek future!? How wonderful that they found another option! What they have is simply a removable badge that you wear to communicate to others with. If you don't want to be contacted or tracked you can just take it off! It works a charm!

Whilst these are just a few examples of technologies that I would welcome, there are many more! I can not even imagine some of the new gadgets that will be available to me in 100 years or more, so its also quite hard to answer this question without inventing some of my own ideas! Rather than do that, I would like to say that what is most important to me are the core principals of our world rather than the details.

If we keep our morals and ethics in check, and start to behave in a synergistic way with ourselves, each other, and the world, then we no longer have to worry about the specifics of what precise tech we would welcome or not. We won't have to worry about AI machines going bezzerk and killing everyone because they wouldn't even be armed! We wouldn't need killing drones or micro bugs because there would be no reason to kill for. It may be hard to imagine right now, but that is what happens when you remove the predatory, survival of the fittest attitude that pervades the world today. Therefore, I am not for or against any particular kind of tech. It is how it is used and for what purpose that is key.

I would like to conclude by saying that when centralized, competitive, capitalistic systems make way for the new resource based economy.. then and only then will we not even have to ask these questions. Our fears today about the future are mostly based on the assumption that our systems will remain the same for much longer. I do not believe they will last long now! From a broad perspective that means 100-200 years. Whilst that seems a lot to us in this present day moment, it is but a flash in the pan in terms of the amount of time that has preceded us. It is somewhat paradoxical that we move at light speed in our development, but are often unable to see it. We live in a limited perspective of our senses and our time frames and our personal desires. When we can let these go, we can see clearly into the inevitable future! The Golden Age Is Upon us!

Of course, the Star Trek universe begins with nuclear destruction of human civilization on Earth, followed by efficient cultural conquest of the Vulcans, under whose technological and cultural dominance the humanity is subject. One could even argue that the Federation is not a "human" civilization, as all that defines humanity seems to have been Vulcanized.

With infinite resource paradigm of the Star Trek universe, conflicts may decrease. Replicators are essentially a religious artifact that provides for material needs, much like the shamanic rituals of the our past provided for material needs of rain, wind, snow, etc. Like religious institutions, the replicators require ever-increasing energy to function. Much of the technology of Star Trek require energy; I surmise that the massive fleets of the Federation patrol the galaxy in constant search for antimatters and dilithium crystals.

The most wise faction in the Star Trek universe is the Ferengi mercantile consortium who recognize the finite nature of resources. While the Federation live on borrowed time, as it depletes ever-diminishing supply of energy without much thought, the Ferengi wisely allocates the limited resources to those who most efficiently utilize them. At the end of the day, when cheap energy runs out, the Federation members will be eating each other.

im assuming u speak klingon!!
;-))

ur definitely a Trekkie!

I like most science fiction. I like Star Trek: TNG because Picard solves most hostile encounters with diplomacy without compromising the principles of the Federation (as much as I despise the Vulcan empire). Janeway, though, treats principles like tissue paper to be thrown away at a moment of convenience and seems to solve her problems with photon torpedoes.

i agree with you about piccard.
but hey dont diss Janeway or ill flag you!!! (joke!)

she was the best in my opinion..
i mean she wasnt THAT bad at flouting the prime directive.. and man she was 70,000 light years from home!

Voyager had some good moments, but when I looked back I noticed that a lot of the writing was nonsensical day-time-soap-opera drama. This was at least the case until 7 of 9 showed up. I did like Janeway on her good days though. Would love to see a series that takes Star Trek to the next level (passively teach real science and not just the limitations of what a screenwriting major tends to know). IOW, combine rational fiction, Star Trek, and Cosmos all into one.

Dude!
Great post!

I don't consider my self a trekkie but as far a shows go it was one of the better ones. I also liked how the show always had a solid moral compass. It highlights how important it is to live according to ideals before anything else. They even used their technologies for it to try and create "utopia"
Great post, great show!

thanks quinnnnn!
i can only watch star trek and stay engaged ;-)
what to do.. im from the future!

Well I hope you share some of that conscious tech with this period of humanity for it is in dire need!

Oh i dooooo! The best tech is heart -mind manifestation power. Works a charm

Your right, its like super powers~*~

A great, interesting and thought provoking article!

I haven't watched Star Trek myself, but I do remember seeing the 'Transporters' and thought how amazing that would be and often think 'if only I could just tele-transport to my destination right now'! Would be so cool, no pollution, queueing waiting, customs!! Big yes to that one!

Universal Translators - interesting to hear about this. I actually believe that the universal language of the future will be feelings. People will be in tune with their hearts and soul and will empathically feel and know what others are feeling and thinking and virtually all communication will be telepathic and through feelings!

The concept of micro-chipping people is one that I find really freaky! Having computers or evil people in control of the computer doing crazy things through mind control - seriously not good and needs to be stopped.

If humanity was based on integrity, compassion and honesty then life would be so different, so I agree with your resource based economy.

Thanks for the great post! :)

thank you michelle.. you know you make me think also.. i didnt mention it but i thought about it.. that the greatest technology is our own great divine creative power. When we start to rely more and more on tech, we let go of our own great potential. I think the best answer in fact would have been that our own body and mind is the best tech we have and all we really need! But you know when you have holodecks, maybe that can be Great fun also!

Isn't it wonderful to spark thought and new ideas in each other!
Yes it is true that being in our full Divine creative power is the most powerful technology we could have, and we do need to stay heart and soul centred and tuning into feelings to not let technology get out of control.
The holodecks sound fun, but also have a feeling of being separate from feeling the experiences. Take holding someone's hand, it has physical beautiful sensation and all those kind of feelings would be missing through a holodeck, unless I'm missing understanding the concept of holodecks?

well you are right, on the soul level.. but in fact the holodecks are indistinguishable from the real world.. and even people have totally fallen in love with holodeck characters!. so only if you are an empath would you really notice!!!

You can touch and even make love with a holodeck character!

Wow that sounds really creepy, and feels it too!

"On a holodeck you can enter any kind of world or space that is artificially generated by computer holograms."

Ultimately someone or some entity is controlling this artificial holodeck, so you're giving your heart to artificial. Sounds like this is an attempt to stop The Power of Love and Divine Creation from being in it's full power. When two awakened souls connect in Pure Love, Light & Truth then that power is literally Divinely magical . . . . so instead people are going to fall in love with a controlled artificial character - not feeling good!

yeah totally.. im really not promoting this for relationships ;-)
but the other aspects are quite compelling.. sport, travel, eco Tourism, education, collaboration.. many great things can be done with this

Yes I can see it could be good depending on how it was used. Would be an amazing way to learn for sure!

Let's hope that the concept of a 'resource based economy' will grow in people's consciousness. It will change the world.
Technology can be used for good or for bad. I'm worried myself with the merger of technology and people on a physical level. Unknowing and unwilling we might become the most dreaded enemy of Captain Picard; the Cyborgs.

yup! let's see where that goes.. im sure there will be some degree of cyborg ness coming . but i hope not too much!!!!!

Technology advancement is indeed exciting and enticing. Though I am more a Star Wars fan than a Star Trek one, but I find Star Trek techs are more relatable to our current technology development. Holodecks is something that I am keen to have. The trend now is going to the direction of more interactive which means larger screen to the extent of the whole piece of glass. With this kind of instant interaction, the experience of distance communication via voice or video call can be improved dramatically.

Transporters is somehow still far away from anything we have now whereas universal translator may soon be real. However, it may not be portable just yet due to the large amount of data that need to be stored and analyze to produce accurate translation.
As for com badge, our mobile phones are literally the com badge of the present. Data are being tracked and collected from our mobile phones almost 24/7 and we may not be aware of. Thus, it is utmost important that we understand the cost that we are paying to use the free service of technology.

Ultimately, all technology can benefit the human civilization but also can be destructive. It all falls back to the morality of the users, which is us. Hence, it is important to not forget about liberal arts, moral, social value education while we continue to advance to the future.

Good deep thinking @eco-alex!

While I am with the OP on the overall picture, indeed I would love most of Star Trek's society, I have one major gripe with the Technology. Transporters. While they may one day be technically possible, let us think. You dematerialize a person, transport data by (let's say, radio) link, then rebuild them. That basically means you make a copy of a person, then kill the original that stood on the pad. That's not good.

yes! this is a good point!..

Maybe the transporter of the future will instead just literally transport the matter as well.. and also worth mentioning is that IF we are the soul and not the body our soul can shift also instantly and so we are still the same person.. Bit deep that but also i feel is true.

Perhaps you are correct, IF we are the soul, then it may be. As you say, a bit deep.

Didn't know you were a trekkie! How d'you get time? The Earthship Enterprise....

hehe.. we MAke time for our real joys in life!!
