The Unofficial IBT Book of Universal Records

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

The Interactive Battle Tournament (IBT) series, created and hosted by @lordnigel, is currently in it's 4th edition. What is unique about this series of contests is that many of the players who participate also contribute to help the contest become better, whether that be by providing content or bots, or otherwise helping the contest run more smoothly. I currently serve as the field judge, assisting @lordnigel with rulings, and assisting players with resolving errors and/or informing them of their available actions.

The IBT Book of Universal Records was originally a joke concept that was conceived between the 2nd and 3rd editions of the IBT. A lot has happened throughout the history of the IBT, and I have been asked to take the joke concept and begin a chronicle of noteworthy events. And so I shall begin with providing the initial content for this "book".

But just like the IBT itself, the book cannot be made successful (or even accurate) with the work of just one person. This is where other talented Steemians involved with the IBT come in. You can help provide content by commenting on this post -- the best and/or most accurate info will be added into the book and posted in future editions. There's also no book cover at the moment -- is there an artist among the IBT players who would like to show the world their talent by making one? The possibilities could potentially be endless.

With all that being said, let's get on with the content for the initial edition for the IBT Book of Universal Records. (Content will be periodically updated during the 7-day timeframe after the initial post, as my schedule permits.)

The People's Turn

Obviously, this work is not all my own content -- it is a compilation of content assembled through the contributions of IBT players. As such, you the players should feel free to use the comments to point me towards other content that may be bookworthy. (Comments may also be used to provide suggestions/feedback.) Everyone who authors new material that is officially accepted into the IBT Book of Universal Records deserves to, and will be compensated for said contributions. With that being said, here is what I plan to do regarding post payout this time:

Everyone whose contribution(s) are either part of the initial post or accepted into the book will receive an equal share of the SBD portion of the post payout (the rewards are set to 50/50). I will distribute the entire SBD portion and keep no share for myself because I get the full SP portion by default.

The following people are in the initial share pool for this edition of the IBT Book of Universal Records:

Love this!

What a fabulously fun idea.

I was going to reply that I tied @cryptonik's record but you were to fast! Thanks for adding me!

Some great light reading while we wait during Bot intermission :)

I leave a comment here hence on all the other IBT posts are too many comments for this to be noticed . I enrolled to play IBT as i thought it would be interesting to earn something in return for my skills to writing and the time i dedicate for playing and composing

The caracter comment was upvoted which led to think that it will worth the exchange.

Playing on stage one prooved otherwise, no upvote from the creator of the contest @lordnigel nor steem earned . Quite disappointed about that as no appreciation been shown for the input.

I tried to play second stage, and the bot doesn't work now. Fair enough about that, as it may be quite difficult to deal with bots. But i was asked to head for stage 6 and follow some sort of instructions of about rolling the dice, but kinda sugesting to skip all those stages inbetween.. And as well probably the comments of playing the game will not be upvoted by the game creator, as how it should be polite and/or common sense as a sign of appreciation for involving.

If you think otherwise about that, feel free to express . Personally i do and i like to get involved in projects and things with the expectation of course that the project is a 2-way highway rather than a 1 way highway.

**Edit: just saw i received by transfer 0.027 steem about 40 mins ago. Comparing to the fact that all players that write 2 words and a line receive same reward, i wonder what is the point of thinking and writing an insightful comment as being part of the nature of the beauty of ibt, instead of just saying 2 words that anyone can write ? I thought that this tournament game would promote storytelling, imagination, and creation. It looks like is not really the case unfortunately..

Hello Viog37,

Thankyou for taking the time to enrol, participate and for leaving this important comment.

The fact it took me this long to read and reply, just goes to show how busy I am (which I hate to say, but it's just a fact). An unfortunate consequence is I just can't get to everyone and give them the close attention they deserve.

One of the great things about IBT is many people like @cryptonik and @doughtaker (whom are also crazy busy) some how find time help out and try to steer new people along the way. They do this of their own free will and expect nothing in return (although yes I may reward with an upvote to a couple of words here and there to say thanks on behalf of all players). I may also occasionally upvote at the end of a trail or as a way of indicating or highlighting a particular comment to grab attention.

It's really important to read the rules and learn what other people are doing. With IBT the players don't expect to receive anything, up votes or prizes (this is the same across the whole steemit platform).

The interaction from IBT doesn't come from me? I am just the current host of this developing Steemit Community event; interaction comes from all the players, volunteers and yourself. In this sense if your post/reply/story is of a quality that people liked, every player has an equal opportunity to upvote you, reply to you etc....

Still, you are correct as host I need to be more respectful and try to get to all the players (in particular the new ones). All I can do is say sorry, I'll take it under consideration and try to do my best.

In the end, IBT is an experimental self manage, progression based competition. This means you do need to read the rules, progress on your own, think creatively on how to post quality and then interact with others as well. The whole thing is developing and helping in a developing project means things go wrong or people get overlooked.

If it matures into a polished piece, it will be much easier for participants, volunteers and myself to focus on the storytelling aspect - and this might be a better time for you to join.

Joining now and you are more donating your time as a tester (and I may not have made that clear enough for new participants)...as a tester you must be prepared that your quality content may not get the kind of look in it deserves.

Thank you for the feedback, I will attempt to re-enforce during enrolment and information posts that this is not a polished product and that it is in development only, plus lift my game a bit to helping new players.

Cheers

Hello. I understand what you mean here. What i was saying was not referring about the rules of the game and about what people are doing in their free time. But about improving the quality of the game by rewarding those who provide better quality to the interactive game through what they post. As i've seen many ridiculous few lines comments from participants, which only took half a minute barely to write; compare that to dedicating up to half an hour for fully engaging and integrating as much possible the character into the world created by the game and reacting to it and to its dynamics. That's how i see this thing.

No worries, now I understand where your coming from.

Unfortunately no this is not a creative writing contest in that sense...but I do like the idea. You should try hosting one, seriously, it's a good idea :) and IBT is about spawning other ideas and supporting others, so if you wanted to do a comp like this I'd be happy to try and help.

IBT is a fun, break from the standard Steemit posts. The way value is measured is different. If someone does a fun or serious description of their attack and then backs it up with a picture it will likely get an up-vote. You don't need to to do short funny one line replies, but if you do and it amuses me or others, you may get an up-vote..In many ways it is more suited toward funny, one line replies with a picture then a serious one, but it will equally be up-voted.

Still, If you consistently posted a serious, creative story on each stage you would have been rewarded though.

Let me have quick look..Yep, your stage one post was good and it got a decent upvote by many players..nice, like your enrolment though it lacked a picture.

You hit stage two very late...If I recall I was waiting to upvote you after you completed the round, but you didn't (even though the bot was down, you could have played on at that stage using the rollthedice or gobbo method). You probably needed to just do a reply at that point that you were lost and someone would have helped..never mind.

Unfortunately we did not expect the primary bot to go down...it created allot more work and allot of uncertainty for us (it was late in the game though and you must have been way behind in posting? which is ok, it's just easier to get noticed if you track and post early).

All the best

Oh i see. I presumed that being on Steemit then automatically is by default to encourage novelty and quality as much possible.

It may be indeed a nice idea, but i would really have no clue how to do that or where to start. I would appreciate your help in it, though i realise how stretched your time is, and having another thing to incorporate in your schedule, won't make it easier for you.

And yeah, i understand. I tried to make something to stand out through your interactive game, and as well to earn some steem. But i'd rather don't do something just for the earnings themselves; there're too many doing that already and i don't want to be part of that group.

Anyway, i like your initiative and i was glad to be part of it. I appreciate your input and effort that you put into the community. Cheers

No worries mate, all the best!

Should @lordnigel provide a response, I'm sure he could explain things better than I can. (This is also why I waited this long before giving you a reply, to give him the chance to respond. He probably didn't receive any notification that you were addressing him -- Steemit is still in "beta".) This is my understanding of how the rewards on comments in the IBT were supposed to work:

My upvotes (which at 1%, were indeed worth nothing) during the stages had nothing to do with who made what comments, or the quality of the comments. As the field judge, I made those upvotes to indicate who successfully completed a stage on their first attempt -- the requirement to win a stage payout. This was intended to make it easier for @lordnigel to audit and verify who was supposed to get paid -- anyone I upvoted was verified to be eligible, and that's how you got your 0.027 STEEM award.

Now if @lordnigel read over any of your comments and he was truly impressed by how one of them stood out, then one or more of the following could have happened:

  • You could have received a direct upvote from @lordnigel.
  • You could have won a TROPHY token, which would've come from a reply to the winning comment.
  • You could have won a free item of your choice from the shop, which also would've come from a reply to the winning comment.

I can't say much beyond that. I don't know what @lordnigel did or didn't do with respect to your comments. I can only hope that the explanation I could provide here makes things a little clearer.

Ok, it's payout time. The reward from this post was:

As previously stated, the entire SBD portion of the reward gets distributed, so that's 0.198 SBD to be divided evenly between 5 eligible contributors. I'm going to round it up to 0.2 SBD, meaning 0.04 SBD each for @lordnigel, @cryptonik, @doctorcrypto, @canadianrenegade, and @fronttowardenemy. Payments will be coming shortly followed by a screenshot showing proof of said payments.

(EDIT: Payments made.)
