The Philippines is rich in traditions and beliefs, most especially when it comes to monsters and mythological creatures.
Different stories from different places, in every town and every province. Monsters like "manananggal , kapre , aswang , tiktik and a lot more. It has been a part of our childhood when our parents used to frightened us just to obey them because if not the mumu or ghost will take us.LOL! I still remember when I was a little kid, I lived in the province with my grandmother. She always says to put salt and garlic near the window when the night falls to keep the monsters away from our home. I was very scared during those times. I felt that were in a great danger every night before going to sleep.haha...

Since Halloween is just a matter of days to go. I just want to list down some of the scariest monsters (aswang) that i know to give some more highlights to the essence of this upcoming Halloween.

10. KAPRE

This mythical creature is characterized as a tree giant. It is said that it is about 7 to 9 feet tall and has a hard muscular dark body with a long beard and always holding a giant cigar that never burns out. It is usually sitting on a big tree looking for a lady to marry. It was believed that if Kapre fell in love with a girl, he will then take the girl's soul to him in his mythical house to live with him forever. Kapre also takes revenge to those people that destroy the tree where he lives.

9. NUNO SA PUNSO / DUWENDE

imgsource
These are tiny-human like creatures that lived underground or in an ant hill. They only interact with humans if they are disturbed like destroying their house. It is believed that will give sickness to the person who ruined their homes and can only be healed if you ask for forgiveness and give offerings to them. There were 2 kinds of Duwende, the white who were said to be good and the black one who were evil and bad.

8. WHITE LADY

imgsource
This is a ghost lady who got killed in a specific area or places. Often told to be dressed in white and floating on the air. This creature keeps on reappearing on the same places because it said that it still has an unfinished business to take care of. And because she was a spirit/ghost, she can't touch you physically and can't harm you either but sometimes it can be causes of a car accident because she often shows at the backseat of the car covering her face with blood. Seeing someone like that will freak you out of fear and brought you to accident.

7. TIKBALANG

imgsource
The tikbalang is described as having the head of a horse, the body of a man and the hooves of a horse where human feet would be. It enjoyed making travelers lose their way and made them imagine things that don't exist. They say that if you turn your shirt inside out and ask them to stop, then they will stop bothering you and eventually find your way back.
If there was a time that is raining while the sun is bright, elder often told that there was an ongoing marriage of Tikbalang happening not far away.

6. TIYANAK

imgsource
This tricky monster often lures its prey using a voice of a child. Then after picking up by some concerned individual to rescue the child, it will then shapeshift to a monster killing the victim by its sharp teeth.
There were stories that this is actually a baby who killed by its mother through abortion. This creature seeks for vengeance for what they did to him.

5. TIKTIK

imgsource
The tik-tik is described as a creepy monster with very long tongue. Its favorite prey is a fetus. Tiktik can easily sense if there's a pregnant woman around. Its tongue used to sip the flesh of the baby out of the mother's womb during the night. The tongue can extend in a thread like thing to penetrate to the mothers navel unnoticeably.

4. MANANANGGAL

imgsource
The Manananggal is a kind of a Filipino monster myths that detach the upper part of the body and leaving the lower part behind whenever it planned to get a victim. It is said that this creature is like a tik-tik because it also had a very long thread-like tongue that it uses to get the fetus from a pregnant woman. It also attacks its victim by its pointed nails and powerful and sharp teeth and eating the body organ after killing its prey. Unlike Tiktik, the Manananggal has a large bat-like wings allowing it to fly to easily find its prey.

3. SIGBIN

imgsource
Depending on region and storyteller, the sigbin resembles either a hornless goat, a reptilian crow, or something vaguely along the lines of the Chupacabra. What is most common with all accounts is that its head hangs between its forelegs which are much shorter than its hind legs. Whether because of physiology or because it makes the sigbin seem scarier, it is also known to crabwalk backward. The sigbin also has a long whip-like tail that emit’s a foul stench and two grasshopper-like legs on its neck that enable it to jump far distances. They wander around at night in search of children to devour but they keep the hearts to make amulets. Most stories and sightings originate from the Cebu region.

2. BAMPIRA / VAMPIRE

imgsource
This blood-thirsty creature is very well known for its pointed and sharp fangs. It was very powerful in terms of strength and speed. You'll probably can't escape if you're the target. They sip the blood of its prey till the last drop. The victim will then after dying from the attack will resurrect after a while and turn to be a vampire like them. Vampire weakness is the sunlight so they only attack during nightfall and sleep in coffins during the day.

1. ASWANG

imgsource
The Aswang is probably the most common of Filipino monsters since there are so many different kinds. In general, they are shapeshifters who are human by day and then at night turn into a dog, a pig, a bat, cat, snake… the type of animal depends on the regional lore. They break into funeral homes and steal recent corpses. They are also known to enter homes to drink human blood and can turn people into aswang by tricking the human to bite them in return.
