Monday Motivation: Dusting Off

in #writing7 years ago

Few things are impossible to diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance.
— Samuel Johnson

I've had a lot of things going on lately, pulling me this way and that. Moving, taking care of things in my new house, not to mention that during the summertime, the kids' schedules get a bit wacky. One of the things that tends to fall by the wayside in times like this is my writing. Not that there aren't tons of things I want to write – I always have a list as full as the day is long of ideas and half-thoughts that I want to flesh out. But then life conspires to pull me away with things like having to shop for a new fridge (not to mention install it) or ripping out the rogue bushes that are growing at the front of my property. By the time I feel like I have things at least a little under control, I'm too tired to even think about writing.

The good news is that it's never too late to dust off whatever it is you want to write. No matter how long an idea has been rattling around in your head, or an outline has been rattling around in your drawer, you can always pick up your pen or pencil or keyboard and renew your dedication to getting it done. In fact, sometimes you even find that it's easier to figure out what it is you really wanted to say in the first place. Or better yet, you realize that old thing you wanted to say doesn't matter so much anymore, but now you have something even more important, or urgent, or worthwhile saying this time around.

I recently picked up a paper that I wrote almost four years ago, and I've been going through it slowly, adding to it and fleshing out my ideas. It's not easy, but there's something there, and I know it will be worthwhile when I'm done with it. I don't have any idea how long it will take me to finish, but right now I'm more focused on the fact of just taking the next step forward. And the next. And the next.

Remember: It doesn't matter how long you've put something off — the important thing is that you pick it back up again.
