Skin Deep - Writer's Block Writing Contest

Andrea sighed in frustration, when would the mirror stop taunting her? Her reflection screamed at her; look at those thighs, you’ll never have a thigh gap. Couldn’t resist that oatmeal, could you? You should be ashamed of yourself. Andy scoffed and turned away from the damn distorting mirror; it’s just the anorexia talking. Before leaving the house, Andrea ran her eyes over her outfit; cream Joseph coat, black Christopher Esber top, Levis jeans, Gucci bag and By Far shoes. Perfect, as always.

There’s a car accident on the road; an upturned black sedan reeked of charred skin and blood. Andy shuddered with revulsion, thank God she wasn’t involved. Louis’ Café’s entrance entered her view. “Crap, Jean’s not here”. She better order her green tea before people noticed she was alone. Fifteen minutes later, he was still absent. Andy drummed her fingers on the counter top and her leg bounced restlessly, her watch felt heavy on her wrist. She needs to call him again.“Where are you? Answer your phone! What will people think when not even my boyfriend bothers to go out with me? Many men want me and I chose you, you should appreciate me… I’m leaving, call me when you’re finished with whatever it is you are doing.”
The nerve of that guy, no one had ever stood her up. Perhaps she should find someone else. A man who isn’t clueless about fashion, likes adventures and treats her like the princess she is. But Jean is so handsome and down to earth. Not to mention he’s the only one that doesn’t see her as a brainless bitch. Maybe she should call and apologize, it’s not normal for him to be late. Suddenly her phone starts to ring, Jean’s name flashing on the screen. “Finally! Babe, I’m so sorry about what I said...” Andrea’s apology got interrupted by a voice she didn’t recognize. “Miss, there’s been an accident...” She blocked the man’s voice and felt her legs buckle. Where’s a seat? She needed to sit now. Andy looked frantically around while people bumped into her but couldn’t see anything;she could feel her breathing speed up and it was getting hard to breathe. Amidst all the chaos she finally spotted a bench in front of the café and dived for it.

She doesn’t remember what happened after, it was all blurry. Brief images flash before her eyes, the hospital’s entrance, a doctor, an awful smell of disinfectant and people talking; they were asking too many questions. Jean needed a new kidney and somehow she was a match but that surgery would mar her body. She could feel how her reflection would haunt her; look at that ugly scar, who could want you with that on top of your fat body? But at the same time it was Jean’s life on the line. What was she supposed to do? In a blink of an eye Andrea was on a stretcher and next thing she remembers is waking up. She saved Jean’s life.
