Ladies, now that it is January 2013, summer will soon be upon us and of course we all want to hit the gym this winter so that we can look our best in our swimsuits this year! But with so many fashion options, it can be difficult to know exactly what to wear when we’re at the gym or running outside on the track. But this list gives you the basics so that when you hit the stores, you know exactly what to buy for your closet!

Good Running Shoes: First and foremost, your average tennis sneakers are not going to cut it. Hit a store like Modell’s or another athletic store and getting fitted for running shoes. It may be expensive, but brands such as New Balance and Sketchers make some great athletic sneakers that are comfortable and won’t break the bank. We recommend New Balance 890v2 and Sketcher’s women’s GOrun2 to start off with, as they are both excellent for running or the gym, and are relatively inexpensive compared to some other models.

Lower Body: If all you are doing is hitting the gym, then a pair of yoga pants such as Old Navy’s boot cut pants are really all you need in order to stay comfortable while you work out. You can also invest in a good pair of cotton or polyester gym shorts for the warmer months, too. However, if you’re going to be running outside or do intense workouts, you might want to opt for spandex pants or sweatpants that will wick away moisture so you don’t come home in a puddle of your own sweat.

Upper Body:Depending on the season and if you are working out indoors or outdoors, you will always need at least one or two t-shirts made of cotton or synthetic fabric; cotton is better for less intense workouts but a shirt made of synthetic fabric will wick away sweat better and keep you cooler. A good example of this is Under Armour’s Sonic Short Sleeve shirt. You might also want to invest in a tank top or two as well as a few long-sleeved shirts and a hoodie to keep pace with the change of the seasons as well.

Sports Bra: No matter whether you have large, small, or medium sized breasts, every woman needs to invest in a durable sports bra! For larger-breasted women, you might want to purchase a sports bra such as Freya’s Black Samba Sports Bra or Max Sports Bra by Shock Absorber. Women with medium sized breasts might want to check out Moving Comfort’s Juno Sports Bra while women who have smaller breasts should look at Moving Comfort’s Alexis Sports Bra.

Now that you know what you need to add to your closet, go out there and get shopping! And remember: have fun buying your awesome new workout clothes because it’s okay to splurge and pamper yourself, especially if it will keep you motivated while working out!
