Changes I'd Like To See
The main issue is that most Steemit witnesses for their thread link they just write their seed node stats. I know it's important, but we need to have a better underSTANDing of what you STAND for. We also need more updates and communication. There is a big lack of presence for witnesses on Steemit for sharing their knowledge. Some share their personal stuff like photography etc., which is awesome and rounds them out as a person but as authorities they should be providing some more value to the people on Steemit.
Another big trend I saw was that there are too many for tags to subscribe to and use. So many witnesses have a tag for you to use, it defeats the point of tags if all the ones you use are for a vote from a witness for more money when we should be using tags to describe the content. Everyone has a different tag so if you want money, you use 5 branded tags, but if you want to have your content where it would make sense and where it was supposed to be you should technically use categorical and niche tags. So use tags to provide SEO, indexing, and information.
I will start a project and dive more into exploring improving communication and trust between users and the witnesses.

Inactive Witnesses And Using SteemPlus
It's important to make sure you are voting for active witnesses and if you don't want to have to go through with checking that kind of thing you can get SteemPlus which I've talked about many times. It's an extension for your browser with a crazy amount of add-ons for Steemit, one being witness information on your profile and it will show you if you've voted for someone inactive!

Anyways it shows your votes and you'll see a red line through their name if they are inactive. I was previously voting for @roadscape for the work they did on Steemd.com but realized road was inactive and unvoted. I figured I'd use the example to teach and show you though.
It's important to actively keep up with your witness votes or you should be proxying your vote if you are not at all actively participating in the political system built here. I instead urge and encourage EVERYONE to vote to have the best representation on the Steem blockchain.
I am going on a 4 day vacation from the 22nd-26th so I'll have brief hiatus then come back and announce my witness campaign. (I won't be taking another vacation lol) People have started voting for me, so I am accepting votes and will come back in May with my proposal with sometime to brainstorm on my vacation.

hi @scottcbusiness and thank you for the witness vote. You make some interesting points about the tags. But I think each whale likes different types of content so have a tag so they can find it
but that is only beneficial for whales really and the people following them around for a hopeful upvote. As Steemit scales we should have it growing around the actual correct usage of tags for informational purposes.

Good points Scott, but running a witness node (just from the plain simple goodwill to support this platform), correct pricefeed, pay for server costs etc...time-to-time it might get a little bit too much for a minnow...of course the top 20 witnesses are closely watched by the community and it probably makes more sense to have more information about your top authorities, but for smaller players (read extra small) like us - it's a bit of a struggle, don't you think? Like, what place are you on witness list at the moment? Looking through steemian.info looks like not even in the 400 list yet...sad, isn't it? I will give you my witness vote though...out of solidarity, because I felt the same excitement at first when I started here and it slowly faded, but the belief is still there :)

Great article, I think bots take away value it sucks because there are useful and harmless bots but that opens the door for a ton of bad ones. I take my vote serious and have only voted a handful they all happen to be on your list and Jerry is awesome helps with so much. Cheers

Great work, that sheds some light on the obscure workings of witnesses, everyone stresses how important that is, but its really difficult to come up with a decision, as there is so little knowledge out there.
