@reggaemuffin witness server update

Hey folks,

at some point I just need to make a cut and do a new update. Here is what I am up to lately:

The welcoming contest is going really well. That contest took months of planning and I am glad that my idea + 500 STEEM are in good hands with @inquiringtimes!

My witness server and my seed node are both running with 32GB of RAM and with the steem usage rising I took the time to switch to a 64GB witness server. So my old 32GB server will keep online as a backup server. With me being almost in the top 50 (currently place 56 after a tough ride) I have more funds available to setup a good witness. Expect me to expand that network once I rise higher in the ranks.

I used this opportunity to adapt my witness parameters. I tuned down account creation cost, as the steem price rises, accounts need to be cheaper in steem amounts.

There were also many complaints about bandwidth limits the last days and I finally brought it up with the other witnesses. After some discussion, @timcliff made a post that summed up the issue pretty good. I personally decided that my block size will be higher for the moment. And other witnesses are doing the same thing. It is a tradeoff between good first user experience and increasing the blockchain size.

My witness server is running smoothly and my seed node too. My servers are monitored and since now had no outages or missed blocks.

The buildteam rpc node will get a second server and @themarkymark is working hard on bringing that one up. Our node is the fastest in response time as shown by the rpc node monitor. And since people notice that, we are spinning up a second server to keep it that way.

I plan to review the source code of new hard forks and help with testing the test net. As @ned put it, this is one of the things we need more witnesses doing and I can brush up on my C++ skills that way.

Since I am currently writing on my bachelor thesis, I will have to cut down on helping users a bit. Over the last months I encouraged and supported many users in helping their fellow new steemians. I will continue to support them on a high level but will have to cut down on the amount of private messages that I receive from users asking for immediate help.

My current witness votes are pretty stable and am quite happy with my selection. Suggestions are welcome but since I am on 30 votes now, it is a question on who raises the bar. My witness vote does not count for much but I intend to vote for witnesses who support the network.

I am now in spot 56 and slowly climbing. I lost a few big votes from people who disagree with me and this is a good thing. It shows that people care about their votes and I hope that my supporters vote for me, because they support what I do. I got some unvotes because of MinnowBooster and that is probably something I have to accept. I am encouraging the community to hold discussions on voting bots and how to deal with them. Just saying that it is bad won't get the network anywhere, we need discussion and improvements. And as long as no one is stepping up, MinnowBooster will be the better bot of the lot.

voted your witness @reggaemuffin... By the way what's your bachelor thesis on? The only thing I feel bots should change is ban plagiarists and vet the content to some extent. It might require some more time and effort, but at least prevents abuse.

Thank you for your support!

My bachelor thesis is on runtime verification. My plan is to adapt a runtime verification language into ruby on rails so that it automatically verifies everything on new changes. It is a push to see if academics and real world use can be connected, while keeping the strong properties of the language.

MinnowBooster is working hard to ban all plagiarism. But as @patrice can probably confirm, it is a loosing battle. So we rely heavily on users reporting abuse they notice.

Sounds interesting and promising, all the best for your thesis! And yes that's very true, searching content as a curator gives an idea of the abuse that's rampant here. But your dedicated work for the community is notable, keep it up :)

I think it will be very difficult to implement! Checking the uniqueness of the content will be hard. Users should understand for themselves what they are doing!

Recommendation! Plagiarism can be tolerated, but with some limitations in the percentage. Moreover, it would be more effective if for plagiarism they simply blocked the opportunity to vote. To the post, which contained plagiarism was simply closed for voting.

Why is that?
Very often people copy some news, as they liked it, and there was no time for rewriting. In this case, I believe that it is just necessary to close access to voting on this post.

What do you think? Maybe I'm wrong from the programming position, since I'm not a programmer(
But, I think that it would be fair!

Yes, it would be nice if people would refuse payput on material they did not create. Unfortunately, there are many people who just want to get free money

Unfortunately, such realities of life (

Thank you for caring for the community above your personal interests. It clearly shows that your dedication to see SteemIt grow is bigger than just to be "in the top 50". With that said, here's to seeing you break into the top!

Thank you!

The funds we witnesses get have the purpose of funding our servers and support the community. And that is exactly what I do. I hope that other witnesses see this the same way. A top 20 pay could achieve a lot if used for the community.

Very good informative post friend

Please forgive me. This is my mistake on the tree. @reggaemuffin

Please don't steal other peoples comments. Comment your own things :) and be genuine

It will not be such a mistake.

It really is a good thing that people care about their votes. Not everyone will agree with you, and that's not a bad thing. I do not know much about the bot, so I got nothing to say about that.. anyway, best of luck!

Exactly! Witness votes are important and every steemian should think about their votes. If you vote someone for witness, use it as a tool to push the network into becoming how you want it. Like every government election :)

thr real efforts always pay you, best of luck and keep sharing :)

@sibtainali

Hello @reggaemuffin i just voted for you as a witness you have been of support to most of my nigerian friends i am suee they will understand if cut out on that a bit, concerning the witness voting i dont think there should be compettitions on this witnesses should support each other there still alot that needs to be achieved here its a good thing people are given out votes to those who deserve it.

Thank you.

Thank you for your support!

I will continue to support. It is just hard to keep up with all the messages :)

The nigerian community brought a great many talents to the blockchain in my opinion and I hope that my support can amplify that!

Well said my friend! The TOS of @minnowbooster and your strict dedication to follow through on them is what most other voting bots are lacking.

I agree this is a much needed debate (on a constructive level) and I appreciate your up-front position on the matter!

As always your support for users and this platform in general astounds me. You will be a top 20 witness in no time and Steem will be a better place for it!!

Thank you :) It means a lot to me hearing this from you!

You've got a good heart and ill try talking to my pals about voting for you as a witness.cheers!!

Thank you for your support :)

Do you have any comment about the BIAS and the situation with the SBD?

Sure thing:

SBD is still over $1 but it is slowly getting there.

There is a lot of correlation between STEEM and SBD now so it looks like the people pumping SBD are dried out. I think for users the best thing is to convert to STEEM, that will give good earnings and pull the price down.

My bias is pretty high and tied to the SBD price. This means that (simplified) more SBD gets printed and the price can drop faster. But since I am not that high up in the list and many witnesses disagree with a bias (or just don't know what it does) it does not make a huge difference it the moment.

Thanks man. Awesome answer and you have my support.

I'm planning on doing a post tomorrow about the BIAS and SBD. Can I quote you?

Definitely! If you have any more questions, hit me up :)

Your efforts are appreciable and I want to vote you as witness, but I don't know the background of witness system.

It is like a government election. You vote on the people who represent the steem network. So if you vote me as a witness, you trust me to make decisions that are good for the network.

This affects new user signups, bandwidth, steem price, SBD interest rate and that the network is stable and free. Witnesses are the ones to decide these things and the gatekeepers who accept/reject updates to the blockchain. So you want to vote witnesses you trust and who you feel make good decisions.

Thanks for the knowledge sharing of Witness System. Will vote for you.

Have a great day and stay blessed.

Vielen Dank fuer deine Unterstuetzung @reggaemuffin Viel Erfolg und Durchhaltevermoegen mit deiner BA Arbeit.
