The Death Of Steemit Grows Nigh

in #witness-category6 years ago (edited)

Will it be Lights out?

I came across this post, We are not Immune. Why ZuckerBorg is a threat to Steemit today in my feed by @valued-customer, one of my more loyal participants of dialoge on my own steemit.com post. I breifly commented on his post but I remained so rattled by what I read I could not shake it. I had much more to say and simple comment would not suffice.

image

As a STEEM investor and Steemit Witness I found the content of his post very disturbing.

Steem_divider.png

@valued-customer was summizing his take on an article at the Sovereign Man website by Simon Black. The post detailed how Facebook had banned ads for ICO's and cryptocurrency on it's platform in order to protect its users from frauds. Now this is not really news to the steemit.com community, it has been written about here already in many post. But @valued-customer remarked about how
Mark Zuckerberg was not just a threat to Steemit.com / http://www.bitcoin-insight.com/mark-zuckerberg-hints-at-future-facebook-cryptocurrency-connection-2/
but a threat to everyone.

image

That is disturbing, particularly to me, as an investor in STEEM and steemit.com. The fact that Mark Zuckerberg is likely developing a cryptocurrency to be used on Facebook similar to how STEEM is used on Steemit to reward upvotes and to encourage user based policing of content, Whoa!. The idea is almost exactly what we have here on steemit. But the Simon Black article outlines much much more that actually poses an actual threat to the existance of Steemit and possible STEEM, at least its actual value would be hammered.

Steem_divider.png

How Steemit.com fairs in the near term could depend greatly on how fast it can build and reward exFacebookers. We need faster onbording of new users. This is addressed in Hardfork 20 but no one knows when that will be rolled out by STEEM Inc. So far we have been coasting along on HF19 with two softfork revisons. It's been 8 months since Steemit.com saw any major upgrade.

Another thing we will need are whales to start voting on low level post made by plankton and minnows in a swamp filled with greedy old STEEM timers that incestuously self-vote and ONLY vote on other old STEEMers post. They need to make the swamp worth the swim. It's easy to see, just find an account with a rep score of 60+ and a wallet balance of greater than 50K SP and you will only see votes cast to and from the same group of STEEMers. Like i said it is incestuous!

The flag wars would have to be programmaticaly resolved and the Steemit community would have to be guided in a fashion that encourages rewarded good content by those that have the means to do so whiile discouraging the blatant flagging and abusive behaviour of some whales with a god complex that reward tehmselves for there self assumed yet missguided attemtps at "saving the Reward Pool from rape" while raping the reward pool with self-voting for their own comments on flagged post.

Even if the US Government were to try and use anti-trust laws to breakup Fascistbook as a monoply it is digitally structured in such a way that Dictator Zuckerberg could simply establish his home realm in Belieze or the Grand Caymans, or even China. Yes China. The Chinese are particularly fond of Zucked Fuckerberg as he has openly assisted them in siliencing online dissent against the Chinese government. They would welcome his kingdom with open arms.

It was once rumored that $RDD Reddcoin would be adopted by facebook for this very purpose but after this read I cannot imagine why Dorkerberg would use anything but his very own crypto. Fascist-Coin Perhaps?

The time grows near that Zuckerberg could flip the switch and make this happen with his vast reach into AI tech and his seemingly unlimited finacial stream of ad dollars with which to pay hordes of HB1 Visa blockchain programmers doing jobs Americans won't do . He could overnight create his crypto-kingdom that he will command as the Worlds most powerful.... Central Banker.

Yes, Mark Zuckerberg could in one fell swoop, destroy steemit.com

This Simon Black article needs to be absorbed by all the top 20 witnesses on Steemit; @furion @steemsports @pfunk @curie @thecryptodrive @buildteam @xeldal @anyx @netuoso @smooth.witness @aggroed @pharesim @pharesim @lukestokes @clayop @someguy123 @ausbitbank @blocktrades @good-karma @timcliff @gtg @roelandp and @jesta

It would not hut for @Ned and @Stan to have a peek as well.

Wake up Steemians, The barbarians are at the gate!

Actually there are more threats than you think.

Pavel Durov is going to launch his crypto TON over Telegram network. So, I think that Facebook is more aware of this competitor than Steemit.

First I have heard of this "Ton over Telegram". Thank you for bringing into the forefront.
I will be doing my digging into this venture for a portion of my day today.
I use Telegram I just was not aware of further development.

They already have investors and it looks big. Now comes the monetizing in Telegram. 😉

https://techcrunch.com/2018/01/08/telegram-open-network/

Steemit voting and reward pool allocation is broken. While I would never go to Facebook, I would definitely move to new Steemit competitors if they had a more democratic and merit-based reward system. Vote-bots and users using multiple personal Steemit accounts to upvote their own posts abuses the reward system. Downvoting is broken too; Steemers are not posting or commenting their honest opinions out of fear of being downvoted to oblivion by a zealot whale and his followers. The curation systems encourages minnows to upvote whale content (usually garbage), and to not piss off whales for fear of their downvotes.

Well stated silkrusty. I don't think FB is the biggest threat to steemit.com. The biggest threat is a social media site that "got it right"

No, the biggest threat to steemit is it and its users' own incompetence and short-sighted greed. There's a reason why everyone on the outside views the platform as a weird pyramid scheme, and everyone on the inside is just trying desperately to make money.

Not everyone is concerned with making money. Sure I would love to be able to not work and do nothing but steemit but I have a good income from my hosting. The servers, my witness and seed server are on are actually surplus company servers, since I own the company reprovisoning them for STEEM Servers was easy. I asked myself if I could use them and myself said sure, why not. So I am not out the investment capital cost of the equipment rackspace bandwidth or the power cost. All those fees outside of the original equipment cost are part of my COLO agreement with Tulix.com my data center provider in Atlanta. Those fees are unchanging, a fixed cost.

But I know as investment in STEEM, the value of STEEM it self will be damaged ireparabley when Facebook launches a crypto similar to steem. Now unlike most Blogging STEEMians I am a programmer that can write my own SMT's for other website platforms like forums and news based websites that have reply boards.

So steemit could disapear and I would still do okay with SMT's. But you better be sure Zuckerberg is looking at SMT's too. He will also run something similar to STEEM SMT's on his blockchain. This will pretty much bury STEEM and SMT's regardless of the survival of STEEMit.com. At that point STEEM ceases to be a worthwile investment for anyone. The party is over.

Even for @Ned and @Stan.
But @Ned and @Stan and the whales may see the door closing and jump ship before Facebook launches. Just imagine the flood of STEEM on the exchanges when that happens. You will be lucky to get 10 satoshi for a steem.

I think everything that you wrote is very possible to happen and probably will happen, so those factors combined with how crypto is inflated in price in general for several other factors give steem a very bad prognosis in the mid-term.

lolx, so true mate, there was once I tried to type lolz on a post and remember it might be seen as spam, i don't have much to say on that post only that lolx already implies it but menh i just had to write extra 😁,
and yes about the flag many just use it with out knowing what it should be used for, like that of Steemian account escapede that is the true definition of what flagging should be used for, cause they disobeyed everything and use user private details to perpetrate this act Flagging that account to oblivion is just an understatement an i support every flag they got,. but seriously i once commented on @littleboy post telling him the article he pulles up was good and he should be doing more of that 😁 😁 guess what dude flagged me, i started taking my pen writing in order to really find what i did wrong.

this days o just don't comment on whales post even though I read it, i am always online and read about 72 post or more sometimes i just drop little on no comments.

You say it so much better than I could, I always just degrade into a rant.

That pretty much puts it all in one paragraph.

God bless you for this sire, i simply understand and concor with everything you have said as a matter of fact this right here is so true like the gospel

Like i said it is incestuous!

apart from that sire, what steemit don't know is that facebook has a lot to win both the Facebookers and users, the only ones that will loss here on steemit might be the investors,

mostly comprises of the greedy whales, who flagged others post and upvote their comment on a flagged post, hypocritical whales saving the reward pool, why sucking it dry,

i noticed here on steemit no matter how good your contents are or how good you think you write, if you don't know any whales who knows other whales your post is as worthless as atlantis the forgetten city.

why i made this statement was because i have been a victim of many things you stated here, from flags by @grumpycat that was wrong as his/her claims did not match the reasons why my vote was flagged @firedreams can testify to that, hypocritical cat still got the nerve to upvote his comment worth halve of my pay outs.

secondly i made a project to promote, steem steemit and other related steem platform, @project-atlas

to campaign steemit on Twitter for 7days with mostly minnows who are lost on this platform from most of those greedy whales who. sees their post and behave like the post doesn't worth their upvotes , what i asked from the steemit community was an up vote to each successful reports i made each for the campaign in other to pay minnows that were involved in the campaign, i spoke to many whales about this but now gave me a go ahead but i did that any ways came out with an excellent results

final-reports-steemit-campaign-on-twitter-full-analysis

and paid them the best way i could, i know many would say i wasn't sent to do that but brothers what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

they should start spreading that sp to everyone and stop making it go round among them selves , they are lots of minnows with good post who needs it for self motivations, sometimes i get paranoid why i dont have high sp to help this minnows, with their good contents but this is life, i can not be more than what i am.
and again thanks for putting up this post, i hope whales read this and reflect cause if anything goes wrong with steemit and facebook finally finds a way to rewards its user they the investors has alot to loss.
thank you

Glad you agree with my post here. I have a lot in this and I am not a whale ,aking $100,000 in steem a month running my witness server and seed server. I do good to get 3 STEEM a day as a witness and yet I have a hefty investment in server equipment, bandwidth and rackspace, not to mentiuon the most costly itme in a data center. Electricity.

While I have a 56 score and almost 1600 STEEM I am still but a mere minnow. I truly so understand your point. Many people on facebook already have user bases of 5 or 10 thousand followers. Imagine when the Facebook coin gets launched. Those users will NEVER even come look at an article on STEEMit. Much less entertain becoming a STEEMian and supporting our community.

I will have to look at what you did with @project-atlas. I may need to be repeated, often.

Thank you for your heart felt comment.

yes i understand the fact of being a witness is costly and more costlier when not among the 20 witness,
but keep doing your good works sire the man above is your guild, your powers are strong 💪 💪.

many whales cause of the large amount of whales that troops in everyday thought steemit has arrived lol but it hasn't, cause they who came hasn't benefited like us so they have every doubts to run and to. run for lol
lets make steemit great

#LetsMakeSteemitGreat

and thanks for trying to take a look at @project-atlas well theirs no need for it to get repeated, cause its 7days of every month so its always on every month.
if you can support us the whole community do be glad,

our aim promote steemit and steem related website with the Crowd force of the community.

#Project-Atlas

The system is completely broke, your article and the first comment hits the nail on the head.
But the additional problem is that Steem isnt an FB replacement. Here on the old boy Steem network there is very little other than Crypto postsm holiday snaps, art and writing. Very few niche interests and hobbies are covered. This is like a private members club, and why would they want new members posting stuff about stamp collections or antique hairdryers when all the old timers are sat on masses of easily convertable steem. The first out of the door will be the whales and dolphins with their millions.
If you dont fit in here to a certain political or libertarian box, youre nothing. This is why the platform is screwed because on one embraces difference.

and Ive just read youre a witness in the other post. For this one article you get my vote.

I appreciate your veiw point on this, it has much merit and is pretty accurate with the current sttus of this, a beta interface. Many changes need to be made. Theundrlying blockchain needs vast upgrades and some major tuning in the area of the use of ram on the witness and RPC servers. It is a pretty expensive endevour to do this on your won hardware. A full RPC node can cost over $6,000 in RAM alone.

Your vote for my witness is also very much appreciated.

Good thing I haven't been in FB in a while. Though I use their messengers quite often to communicate for free.

As a newbie here in Steemit I came across few times with the fact which you so nicely reported - whales hanging (voting and caring only for each other) with whales. Somewhere along the line the great community spirit got broken. The massive influx of new accounts might well be from the likes of “go there (Steemit) and post post post and you earn tons of money...don’t know for sure but just my two Steem cents. But hey, everyone here is a banker :) so it’s all good...still :)

Please vote @xsorbik for Steemit witness!

They are not even the same thing, if facebook has a crypto it is so people can give each other cents for regurgitating content, very little would go to actual content authors. It would be more like what reddcoin is trying to do but using opengraph facebook can turn a like button into a here is one cent button quite easily probably have people pay out in local currency instead of the crap exchanges we have to deal with in normal crypto situations.

Steem is a great blockchain but steemit.com is still just a proof of concept, and I mention it a lot but steemit.com , as is, is only comparable to medium.com if the push is to get facebookers and the mob in you need steem itself to change a few things maybe too many things to facilitate people giving money to whatever they want without it being able to hurt the value, instead if they do "rape a reward pool" they should do themselves harm.

Just imagine the twats on youtube trending being on steem, makes your stomach curl.

No, I can't give concrete examples of what I think should change, this is just my opinion based on my limited experience on the platform and even less experience in crypto and my feeling that if you do allow any group of people to form a hive you will get stung to death.

This is exactly the kind of response I wanted from my post. I have ranted and raved long and hard about issues impacting minnows, but mostly been ignored, or handwaved away.

In November last year, @fulltimegeek and @stellabelle began delegating moderate amounts of SP, 1k - 5k, to various accounts they thought would use it to spread upvotes, engagement, and good posts. I reckon this has proved to be a very successful endeavor, and recently I also received a moderate delegation from @v4vapid, which has helped me to do those very things.

These delegations weren't made for payment, and there are million of Steem idling in various accounts that could be making enormous impact in improving the GINI (a measure of wealth inequality) of Steemit.

While I believe Steemit might survive a rewards pool empowered Fakebook, because of the censorship resistance, and anarchic userbase of Steemit, most of whom are not comfortable on platforms pushing propaganda like Twatter, and Youtool, there is no doubt that ZuckerBorg is looking to steal our thunder if he can, and any moves he makes will impact Steemit.

Thanks for taking the ball and running straight for the goal posts!

Glad to take it and run....
I was inspired byyour disclosure
But looking at the votes and the replies and the number of eyes on this post .... it leaves my still in disbelief.
I thought I hammered it. I was sure this would get lot of attention and would be seen, particularly by those top 20 witnesses that need to be planning for this enevitble calamity, yet It seems the tree I fell was in a forest absent of any caring witnesses as seen in the absolute lack of support in the form of an upvote. Not a single witness that has seen this gave it support in an upvote, Not one.
So I can only draw one conclusion, they really are not concerned with the Goose that continues to lay golden eggs. Just wait till said goose is cooked. No more gold, no more eggs.

Still running headlong at that damn goalpost though!
#NeverGiveUp

It's the weekend. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I dunno. I actually don't pay much attention to my rewards, TBQH. I bang on things with a hammer to pay the bills. I come here to engage with folks.

Well it's not the amount of an upvote but it's the upvote itself. No upvote is a show of ambivalence to the situation. As I stated earlier. I have a decent income. That being said it would be nice for the community of Whales to show they give a damn about the minnows and plankton.

Love ur comment! Im gonna have to read some of ur posts now..
following

I couldn't imagine Fascistbook having crypto rewards on posts. It's a place that don't encourage quality content at all. "Likes" mean nothing but to please you're so called FB friends. I haven't been on FB for almost a year and it's the best decision I ever made - made me less sad/ down.

And I would like to see whales going around in Steemit. Yes, for the past 2 months here I have also observed that some just upvote the same people. That's why I can't blame those who rely on vote bots because they feel they've got better chances on these, sadly. I personally do not use the upvote bots even if it's difficult because I'd rather grow organically. But sometimes it feels like only hardwork with no reward (and I just think of other nonfinancial reward to get going), that I need luck like winning a lottery for me to get noticed. I look up to the whales because there's a reason they became one. They should have their best interest in the long term health of Steemit because they will gain more from this long term. I still believe in Steemit so I'm still hoping that there will be improvements soon.

Onething is certain, Fascistbook deals with the lowest common denominator when it comes to quality of content. Als long as your mem does not butthurt some liberal snowflake or espouse a conservative viewpoint it can be as ignorant as a painted bump on the bottem of a frogs ass and it is welcome to stay in your timeline.
