Nikka Rare Old Super Whisky Review

in #whisky8 years ago (edited)

Welcome back, malt-y Steemians! Today we dive into Nikka's fantastic Rare Old Super! But first...

If you have missed my previous whisky reviews, please find them here:

With those preliminaries out of the way, let's dive into the Rare Old Super!

Nose.

Solvent. Paint thinner. Sweetness. Vanillas, cinnamons, and candies meld with butterscotch flavors and chemicals.

Mouth.

Immediate oils and a very oily, yet enjoyable mouthfeel. Malts. Cinnamon. Vanilla. The sweetness of the nose does not come to a full arrival, but waits pleasantly in the background while a moldy Japanese leather, book-binding and glue finishes off the arrival of the more saccharine elements. The faintest intimations of smoke.

Finish.

A quick finish of slight spices, oils, and gum sugar.

RATING: 3/5 Stars. A great, surprisingly complex whisky for the price.

After tasting and nosing this fellow I went back to the Ardbeg 10 Year just for a comparison. The Ardbeg literally smelled like dirt. Exactly. Like. Dirt. And peat. In the most beautiful and sexy way.

The many varieties of tastes, smells, feels, and levels of quality, keep me ever interested and delighted on this path of malty discovery. Stick with me for more, and thanks for tuning in! I hope you'll enjoy my tasting video above, at the top of this post!

Okay this is funny, every Wednesday I do a thing called Happy Whiskey Wednesday, where I leave a backstory on how this phrase came to be and what it entails then post a video of my brother playing guitar and singing, either in his living room or at a bar. It would be awesome if we could collab, and you do whiskey reviews on that day, make happywhiskeywednesday a real tag :)
I have to tell you that you actually made that sound appealing. Despite my happywhiskeywednesday I actually do not favor that particular brand of alcohol. I am a beer connoisseur (or I fancy myself one anyway, ha) I have a 'gradually growing from immature to more mature' wine palette, I enjoy rum like Captain Sparrow, and occasionally gin; but whiskey...I need to make a greater effort. My brother keeps insisting that, and really, you did make it sound delicious. I think it would help if they had descriptions like that on the bottles like they do with good beer. It puts it in your head before you taste it.
Anyway, it's Thursday now so Happy Belated Whiskey Wednesday, and perhaps we can start a new thing next week? (@merej99 would be down for it, she's a whiskey lover) :)

I'm down. Sounds like fun! Thanks for the story and the comment. If you are into wine and rum, I can guarantee you you can get into Scotch whiskies.

Would you consider tasting requests? I've got a bottle of Talisked Port Ruighe at home which I love, To me for it's price, it's top notch, I wonder how you would feel about that one?

I'd be glad to if I can come across it here and fit it in the budget. Thanks for the recommendation!

Have you gone on a long binge with Sake? Seems like a better dinner / party drink compared to whisky, vodka, etc.

I enjoy Saké immensely, but it can give me a pretty good headache. Definitely better for pounding down than whisky if you are out on the town to go out drinking with a bunch of friends.

Ah I shall try that out - I read from a Japanese DJ recently who highly recommended Sake instead of the others, exactly for the purpose that you've mentioned - sounds awesome :D
