Kuala Lumpur WednesdayWalk in my new neighborhood

in #wednesdaywalk6 years ago (edited)

In this view you might think you are looking at a parking lot, but it is actually a road. There are two of them in fact, one going up and one going down a fairly steep grade.

This is my local shopping street in the Wangsa Maju Township of Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. This is only one of the many places I can shop, but it has the biggest concentration of stores, services, and restaurants.

This place is only a few minutes walk from where I live now and also leads to my LRT Station. I am here almost every day and this photo set is from one of the first times I tried to negotiate through the scene. I am still not exactly familiar with this place, but on this day I was highly confused. I think my photos show my state of mind and body well.

I made the mistake of going out too early in the afternoon. It is better to go very early or as the sun is going down. I'm down near the equator because I like to live in heat, but that does not mean I should be wandering around in it.

This next photo shows you a place lower down on the road. The view across the street is pretty much the same as the side I'm on with shop after little shop running up the road. All of them are filled with things I have never seen before and not often telling you what they are in English.

If you look where my logo is on this photo, you see the opening of a flood control raised ditch sort of thing that is very common here. This is known to me as an "obstacle."
wfv6u9h9oz.jpg

The cement things on top can be pulled off to clean out the ditch, or might be broken or missing, but normally you can walk on them and people do. This particular ditch thing is too high for me to climb, and I will go around it and find another way to get up there where the shops are.

This second photo is higher up on the road and you can even see the road in this view. The red car is moving and the white one behind it is parked. The motorcycles all randomly parked is how they do it here. On the left are more flood control ditch things and some of them will be low enough for me to get over.

My goal is to get to the covered walkway on the extreme left. Only a conplete idiot would be standing out in the heat of the street taking photos.

Here is the same place of motorcycles, but now looking in the direction of the walkway. The curtains are down to protect normal people from the heat and glare.

Notice how each storefront is higher them the last. Plenty of random stairs help you as you climb in there. The arch in the middle of the frame is repeated at each change in shop. These are structural to hold the second floors above and indicate where the level changes with stairs.

Now I'm a bit closer to my goal and deciding which path might be easier on my arthritic hips, knees, and feet. If you count and look closely, you can see about fifteen levels of pavement here. Some are steeper than others; and no two steps are the same height. Some places have grates; some places are on a tilt; some places are too high for me to climb. But I will find a way somewhere here. I have confidence now.

I'm in! And now I need to find something to drink before I keel over.

I will post more of this place in future posts and show you what I have figured out so far. On this first day I knew almost nothing about what I was looking at and was just trying not to trip or fall.

My post is for the #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay. I plan to post more of my walks here since I love my new home so much and I am endlessly photographing it.

I know I have already taken much better photos of my wonderful street, but I wanted to start with my first look to remind myself how far I have come in both knowledge and skill of navigation. I can jump in and out of these walkways like a champ now!

howdy there from Texas fitnfun! now this is an interesting post! so many shops crammed into that little area though, no wonder you like it to shop, very convenient. Glad you like the heat there, here it was 96 degrees today but I don't know what that is in Celcius.
I see you alot, like all over the place! lol.
very good post!

I see you just as often in the many curie comments @janton. However I am not up to your caliber.

Texas is one of my favorite places in the States although I have only been to Corpus and San Antonio. I was a Navy Contractor and spent a lot of time in Corpus at the Port there.

Soon I will be showing details of what is in those stores and that will be about 1000 posts. It's endlessly fascinating to me, so I hope you will be interested too.

Trust me, I do not know Celsius temps either. It is extremely hot most days and that is the way I like it. But it is not good to get caught out in it when you don't know what you are doing. It was hot every day I was in Texas as well :)

howdy there fitnfun! so you aren't a native Malaysian? What does a Navy Contractor do? And are you still working an outside job somewhere or are you retired?
It sounds like you're in the right place if you like heat!

Well, I'm a nomad since birth, so I am a bit unusual in that way.

I am an accountant, MBA, and CPA. Now I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and cannot do the 9-5. I never know when I will be down for the count for a few days or weeks, and every morning and bad news for stiffness and pain.

When I worked for the Navy I was the Financial Analyst for the Port of San Diego. I am Canadian and had to leave in 2008 because of 911 and new rules for my position. No foreigners are allowed to do that work now.

I was there 6 years and loved every minute of it. They were supposed to get rid of me a couple of years earlier but the local brass liked me and wrote exception letters as long as they could.

So I was a fat four year old and never lost weight in my life. Once I left the Navy, I decided to get healthy or die trying since I was very sick by then anyway. In 2011 I got to my goal of losing "half my size" and and have stayed like this easily since then. My news skills of eating and lifestyle work for me and are not hard. This is after a lifetime of never once being able to lose weight at all.

Now I coach, blog, write books, film videos, and anything else I can do to help others have the same weight loss success as I did. I've pretty much lost everything I had in this effort and came to SE Asia in early 2016 for the cheaper and healthier living and also to get going on seeing the world.

I was in Thailand for most of this time and just moved to KL on Aug 2. I love it beyond belief here and hope to stay for a good long time. But I have learned not to predict the future and just enjoy each day :)

howdy back again fitnfun! oh my! wow what a story...so I know you have all kinds of information on how to lose the weight but since I don't have the time now, what kind of eating change did you make and was it a specific type like Keto or vegan or something that worked so well?

It had to be something different than you tried before because you said you were never able to lose weight. I love those photos you have on your posts, what an inspiration!

If you had the money would you live in San Diego?

Yes, that's where I saw you, the curie comments feed. I had to give that up because I was falling so far behind on keeping up with the people I'm following but man that's a great way to make some steem!

I'm so sorry to hear about the arthritis. Some times it literally is bad enough that you are bed ridden?
thank you so much, I have such a better understanding of your situation now!

My basic strategy for losing weight was:

  • remove poison from my diet (colors, flavors, gmos, etc)
  • add nutrition in everything I eat - no empty calories
  • exercise daily within my limits
  • get enough rest and sleep
  • don't make excuses.

I still do all of that today and so far, so good. This works for any diet - vegan to paleo. I do not care what you eat - only the quality of your food. Same with exercise. I don't care what it is - just do it.

Yes, in the past I did all kinds of stupid stuff to try to lose weight and nothing ever lost me even one pound. It was not until I cleaned up my food supply that the weight dropped off. I gained on slimfast - go read a label on it and you will see why. Our bodies cannot process that garbage - the sicker you are the harder for your body to tolerate it.

All stopped up.PNG

I hope never to see San Diego again and probably not the states either. But never say never. I had really bad experiences near the end there and they don't stop since I am still in touch with people who remain.

Yes, I get bedridden with my RA. Sometimes it is very bad. I'm in about the 5th week of a flare up right now and it needs to stop. But I try to get up and move or at least stretch in bed and get fluids and other strategies when things are bad.

I like the curie commenting a lot. Now I know why most posts never get those votes and I see a lot of cool stuff!

Thank you for the complements about the photos. I need to make more posters soon. These are getting stale for me :)

howdy there fitnfun! wow I'm so sorry about San Diego, I thought you loved it there! And the United States, you don't like us anymore? alot of times the government sucks.

So interesting about your amazing weight loss and so simple to finally start losing weight. Your story is so inspirational.

About curie, yeah I love doing those and it's so easy to make steem but I had to drop off because I couldn't stay in contact with the people who were following me. I think I did one this week just because a regular of mine got curied, for the 5th time! lol.

they don't follow their own rules very well, they play favorites and reward some real mediocre stuff, shockingly so!
But, there is also such amazing posts on there that you have to wonder how many hours or days it took them to make the post! lol. and some amazing talent as well.
it's so good to hear from you!

I'm picky on curie - No videos, no creepy stuff, no monsters or gaming, no fiction. So that mostly leaves cool art, travel, and food. So far, so good and you are sure right about those huge posts. I used to post only 2-3 times a week and do long posts like that. HUGE waste of effort. None got curies at all lol. I like mostly short posts now.

SD was fine in the beginning. I should have left before my kid got to hs. We were in a small, rich town with great schools so I stayed for that. Now about 15 of the kids he grew up with are dead and many more are very damaged in many ways. He is only 25. For awhile there kids were dying monthly and it was very traumatic. They were his friends and my babies that grew up hanging out at our house.

I pay zero attention to news or politics so that was not my problem, but at the same time the police state was really getting to me, unhappy people, bad food, too expensive etc. After 911 I had to stop telling people I was Canadian or they would give my grief about it and tell me to "go home" if I did not like something there. I always had the plan to see the world after my son was grown so that was that.

Everywhere I have been in SE Asia - no matter how poor or out of the way, the people are friendlier, the food is healthier, it's cheaper, and the lifestyle is more relaxed than in the states. I'm really glad this is where I came.

You hit the nail on the head about my weight loss and this is why I fail as a coach. As soon as someone "gets it" they don't need me anymore. I teach them a few skills and places to look for healthy food and they are done. They call me a year or two later to thank me. If I am lucky I made $79 for a few coaching sessions and maybe they bought one of my books and I made $2 :)

Ah... but the sunlight makes for better lighting in a photo.

I think the glare shows up pretty well here :)

No so in Genting Highlands where I was at between Sunday to Tuesday. Many a times it was raining. :-)

We are having that stormy weather too now. These photos are from August when it was not raining.

Then it looks like Thailand down to Malaysia down to Singapore is the same.

Very interesting #wednesdaywalk @fitinfun I love looking at all the storefronts trying to imagine what is inside. Looks like you will be covering some of that in future posts haha. 7-Eleven is there of course. I think I would be checking out JoJo Little Kitchen it looks inviting.

I'm so glad to read this! I will be showing you the insides as I go in them one by one and now jojo is on the top of the list! Thank you so much :)

Really cool… I like how the motorcycles kind of just pile park and how the steps are all different. Almost as if each student from a 6th grade class engineered and build their very own. Very cool!

lol - great way to put it! Now I will think of that idea for every obstacle I encounter!

I like how you said, "I like to live in heat, but that does not mean I should be wandering around in it." I live in Southern California, where there is lots of heat and sun and I feel the same way. Enjoy the day! :)

I was in San Diego for years and it was too cold for me there! Are you in touch with @mariannewest and socalsteemit? They are active for meetups over there.

Hi! Yes, I am a part of socalsteemit discord group, and she is too. I have to make it out to a meet up soon. Thanks! :)

When I lived and worked in Singapore for a few years I often visited Malaysia and KL, so this post brought back memories of vists there and the busy streets and what to me at the time was strange sidewalks and Monsson drains

Thank for the memories and joining Wednesday walk tip!

Haha! I remember the first time I saw them in Penang when it was dry. They are mostly open up there and I could not imagine what they were. But then it rained for three hours and I got the picture. Thanks so much for the vote and tip. I am committed to posting more of this spot until I run out of interesting sights - so I guess that will be many posts :)

Yes KL has some really cool sights so I am sure I will see more of you

as for the drains I was the same when I first got there why the heck do the need such deep drains, a couple of hours later it started raining and I understood

I know! You can't believe it until you see them in action. If I get caught out there I will be sure to take photos :)
