Wednesday Walk! Clathrus Ruber!

It is Wednesday!
Time for @tatoodjay’s Wednesday Walk Challenge. What a great challenge. We all need to get out and move every day!
We love to walk and simply enjoy nature, seeing something different every day. Today we discovered some interesting finds on our walk. Rainy season is upon us, it rains at some point each day.
Mr. Bird spied something beside the sidewalk. At first I thought it must be a child’s forgotten toy. It looked plastic and was quite colorful.
Upon close inspection we decided it had to be a type of fungus! The detail was incredible. This my fellow walkers, is a Clathrus Ruber, or Latticed Stinkhorn. This fungus feeds off of decaying woody plant material. The fungus first appears as a white egg shaped fungus which bursts upon to reveal the fungus we discovered. It is called a Stinkhorn due to it’s odor. A slimy substance which covers the membrane and smells like rotting meat attracts insects. The insects will help disperse Stinkhorn spores for future fungus development.
As we continued our walk, we found another fungus. This fungus is more common but yet still interesting.

Just when we were about home we spotted this little construction site! This was not here this morning, so these little guys have constructed this in a few short hours. Amazing isn’t it? I am always amazed at the perfectly symmetrical shape!
