I just find it curious how many people get obsessed with putting other people into 'categories', whether political, racial, religious... you name it. And I find it especially strange that many of those same people are also determined to strictly define themselves by one or more of those categories, instead of developing their own opinions and individual character.

These people's worlds are defined by those boxes.
Even though they preach that you should be free to do whatever you want, if you don't fit perfectly into their boxes, you are the most evil of evil.

It is identity politics
practiced by people who were indoctrinated in a T-F, multiple choice world.
Where you are wrong, bad, outcast if you answer the questions wrong.

So, the boxes are their life.

There is already a civil war happening.
Those with boxes vs those without boxes.

I agree, it's our natural tendency for tribalism being taken advantage of and now it is running amok. If one chooses not to participate in it, some people find that more abhorrent than if you were part of a 'rival tribe'. In their eyes, the rival tribe is to be hated, but at least they understand how it fits in their worldview. Something they don't understand or that is unknown/unfamiliar tends to elicit a more visceral response.
