This is the longer of the 2 trails at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The other, "White Oak Trail" I covered in a 2 Part walk which if you missed can find links below.

ARE YOU READY, WELL LETS GO

Map shows the visitor center circled in white. Indian Landing being the destination with the white x.
The Black Tupelo Trail runs south on the east side of the Carmans river, starting from the visitors center. The Trail is named after the Black Tupelo tree, also known as Black Gum (nyssa aylvatica) that grows predominately along wet lands through out the eastern part of the USA.

As you can see, the trail starts out wide with fine granite stone making it seem tame. It is a 3.2 mile trail, about the limit for me. Luckily it was about 70 degrees, 21 celsius.

The trail quickly loses the granite stone and is a soft forest peat brown. The trail just recently reopened for tree and brush removal. Seems passed fires had killed a great number of large Pitch Pines. These pines were now a hazard of falling, some on the trail.

Heavy equipment was used to cut and knock down the once large Pine trees. Parts looked quite devastating.

This is the home of the nesting Osprey, Which I got a few photos, flying high over the river. They have a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet, (1.5 to 1.8 meters)

Getting down towards Indian Landing much bulldozer work is seen.

I like these walks in nature, they are really de-stress ... What a pity that some of the trees have been burned and knocked down; but, the nature is very skillful and soon it will recover ... With that temperature of 21 celsius and 3.2 thousands, it's fine for me ... "Without hurry but without pause"...Greetings @manorvillemike

These walks do take you away and change your mood.

Looks like a fantastic place to take a hike. Reminds me of a place we used to go occasionally when I was a kid; 'Dawes Arboretum'. It has different kinds of hiking trails, some easy and 'tame', and some are much more challenging.

Long Island's south shore is mainly flat, easy walking.
