WHITE OAK TRAIL // Part 2
Back on the White Oak Trail at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley Long Island NY. We left off at the yellow circle on the map heading south and about 1/4 of the way.
Very large Pitch Pine
An even larger Pine that has a severe lean.
On the left between the trail and the river marsh complex I come across a burnt out bit of forest. Luckily it is only about a half acre. Could have been a disaster for the Refuge. Will ask about the fire next time I take my Black Tupelo trail walk.
The fire had burned up to a path that went from the trail to the river. This path may have prevented the fire from spreading.
Back on the Trail.
Came up to a man made pole platform, made for Osprey nests. This one has a server lean, like the large Pitch Pine. Could have been from the same storm.
The platform has a nest on it and will most likely be rebuilt this Spring by a pair of Osprey.
Coming to the south end of the trail, where it will loop back north further away from the river. At this point there is an overlook that takes in the broad expanse of the river/marsh.
That's it ........lets take a break ...... the walk back wasn't as scenic so all are spared. ..... I took over 100 pictures, so may have some individuals to post.
I will not cease to enjoy the beautiful pictures of this nature with you.
Enjoy all you want. @eii
Really like the nest hope something else uses it for a home @manorvillemike
They will and do.
Good walk @manorvillemike, I think I also went through it thanks to your description ... by the way that larger Pine that has a severe lean, it reminded me of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Greetings.
