Safety - preventing slips, trips and falls

Safety is very important in our everyday life, be it at home, work place, playground etc. Slip occurs as a result of reduced friction between the foot and the walking surface. Trips occurs when someone in motion collides with an obstacle. While fall occurs as a result of lose of balance.

Some of the factors which causes slips are wet floors, smooth slippery with surface, highly polished floors, wearing inappropriate footwears and dirt or debris on the floor. While Factors that causes trips and falls are trailing cables, damaged floors, left opened drawers, sudden change in floor elevation, poor lighting of the work area etc.

Some of the simple ways to reduce slips, trips and falls includes staying alert and being aware of your surroundings. When you are aware of your surroundings, you will notice if there is obstacles ahead of you, water on the ground or cables flying around.

wearing of appropriate footwears is a very important approach towards avoiding slips. In an environment that is always wet or has a smooth surface, wearing a footwear with grips in necessary.

Making use of the rails on stairs will provide support to an individual, and help in preventing them from falling. Make wide turns at corners in order to prevent collision with others. Making wide turn at corners will give a clearer view.

Ensure appropriate lighting within the environment to ensure that all individuals get to see their environment clearly so as to avoid collision with obstacles.
