This is a great initiative! I am all for using "volunteers" in this manner. They have to clear their community service and they really are doing a great service to the planet.

Thank you for sharing this!

It's definitely one of the better uses for volunteering. I've always thought of a compromise for free education would be public service. If you can hold a pen you can hold a trash bag.

Hey, do you know about the tag #cleanplanet? It's a movement here on Steem to get people to pick up litter. You take video or photos of yourself, something that you wrote the date on it, and picking up the trash and tag it #cleanplanet. You can find lots of examples on their blog @cleanplanet!
Thank you for doing this volunteer work! I agree that was pretty thoughtless of them to have single-wrapped plastic for the snacks, though! O.o

I think I heard of this tag before, but I've never used it myself. I'm one of those people who likes leaving a place more clean than I found it.

That's good! It's the ethics of scouts and Pagans and the forest service. :D

Come and visit our beaches in KZN South Africa for a real challenge!
We have a big problem with people who choose a beautiful beach on which to picnic and leave their styrofoam, plastic, broken glass and alcohol bottles lying around for the tide to suck out and kill our fish, seals and penguins.
I pick up litter every day as many people do........it is a heart breaking fact that many people, though educated to do better, could not care less.
Big sigh........but we soldier on regardless as we have a magnificent coastline to protect.
I encourage you to visit us anyway.

It sounds like you have a lot of animals there, but too much garbage. I bet they don't like that at all.
I think when it comes to cleaning up it should be up to the local communities or frequent visitors. If I go there to clean up, they will just trash the place again. It happens in areas here too. Fishing villages tend to be the worst.

Litter is really a huge issue - everywhere. We live on a corner and on a road that's relatively busy with pedestrians - espcially in summer. The kids walk past on their way to the dam to swim. It freaks me out that they just drop their litter wherever they are. Catch them at it and they get a million words from me. Hats off to you for getting involved.

It is really annoying. They've taken out the trash bins here because people dump household waste in them. Many snacks come in single service packaging.
Lecturing the kids is interesting, I guess their reactions are varied.

A little silly to be giving out snacks that way...

Huge applaud for you all for cleaning the river banks. Very important to keep our waters clean. The earth thanks you!

Thanks. I like not seeing garbage and trash when I walk or cycle past there.

Howdy sir abitcoinskeptic! That's a very noble cause you are helping with, good for you. Weren't you on high alert for snakes in that area?

I've seen the little green guys by that river. I assume they are harmless. There are dangerous ones here, but not so many. The older folk like to catch them amd but them into alcohol to make magic potions.

howdy today sir abitcoinskeptic! whoa...the locals catch the venomous snakes and do what with them?

It's called snake soju. You get a snake and put it in a bottle of liquor/whiskey then you drink it after a year or so. Apparently, it is good for 'male stamina', but the scientific data is sparse. I had a glass of it once and other than a slightly off taste, nothing happened.

Oh man, it sounds like a nightmare! lol. It probably costs alot more too right?

No one really sells the stuff. You have to find the snake yourself which is half the fun. Personally, I would rather leave the snakes alone. Poisonous snakes aren't really an issue in Korea. I haven't heard of a death from snake in a long time.

Howdy again sir abitcoinskeptic! How long have you lived there? I get the impression that it's been awhile.

Yeah, definitely. I'd say it's been over 10 years.

That sounds like a wonderfully productive way to volunteer! Ironic snack selection indeed - I wonder if they'll eventually change it up (or maybe use products wrapped in biodegradable plastic). I've always thought that using "forced" volunteers (people who need to do community service for punishment) to clean up areas was an excellent idea - glad to see it's happening in places. Best of luck with your future volunteer efforts!

Thanks.
We can recycle vinyls here, buy I'm not sure what that means. Recycling is sort of ambiguous and often mean separate disposal.
I do like watchimg the forced volunteers, they tend to do a poor job until they are reminded that they can get bonus hours by working harder. Some of them are so bitter. Maybe they will change later.

You're welcome. And what I meant was I've seen some snack foods lately that hubby's brought home from work (his manager has a table in the office set up with munchies for the team to grab on the go, and she's been trying to add healthy, environmentally friendly things lately) that had wrappers either made from recycled plastic, or were biodegradable... of course, at the moment, I can't think of a single specific example...LOL!

And yes, sometimes people are so bitter they can't see the opportunities presented to them. However, you never know when a small seed is planted, and years later, it helps them grow and change as a person.

Hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

I have definitely seen a healthier and more environmentally friendly options. Buying a box of cookies instead of a box of packages of cookies is one idea. And yes, not all plastic or paper is equally as bad. I'm sure most of the stuff is recyclable, however, you get people saying stuff like, oh a gum wrapper is so small, why recycle that?

I remember when I was younger, they used to have chain gangs (prisoners) picking up litter on the side of the highways. I guess that was too cruel, because I don't see them anymore. That's why are Texas 🇨🇱 highways are so littered. 😠

Chain Gangs seem like an excellent way to allow prisoners exercise while cleaning up the world =)
My guess is they were escaping or causing a scene. Better just have them do work inside the prison where people can't film and it's harder to escape.

That's awesome! I can't understand how people trash beautiful spots like this. They go there to enjoy the beauty of the nature and then treat it like a dump. They don't go to the dump to enjoy nature... so it makes no sense to treat it like a dump. I'm always cleaning peoples trash when I go hiking along the rivers and streams here. I can't not clean up trash when I see it in nature.

People tend to take am out of sight out ofnmind approach. If you dump it in the lake no one will see it. If you walk past you won't see it. If youbare packing up to leave you won't see it. =/
