The other day @ahmadmanga made a post asking what retro gaming systems people have and I mentioned I loved old point and click games like Sam and Max Hit The Road. See ahmadmanga's post here. I was asked why I liked this game so I decided to write this post because it is one of my favorite PC games ever.

I Love 90s Point and Click Games

If I had to name the top 5 point and click games I love and repeatedly played over the years they would be Maniac Mansion and it's sequel Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Sam and Max Hit The Road, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

I've always loved point and click games. These are computer games where you use your mouse to click on different things to select them to further game play. Each game has a story and as you figure out what objects in rooms and locations are useful you use your mouse to click and use the objects causing more of the story to be revealed.

Sam and Max Hit The Road Review

Sam and Max was the second point and click game I ever played. I got it when I was in junior high back in the 1990s. It was a MS-DOS game released in 1993. I remember having to go into DOS and type in commands to launch the game thinking it was so cool. I still have the game but have to use special software to get it to work on my mac since it's not compatible.

A Little Naughty and A Lot of Fun

Sam and Max has some adult humor and jokes while still being clean for kids to play. The plot of the game revolves around finding a Bigfoot named Bruno who ran away from a carnival with girl with a giraffe neck named Trixie. Sam, a dog detective, and his partner Max, a rabbit type creature take the case and try to solve the mystery of what happened to Bruno and Trixie. They travel all over the United States tracking the two who are in danger and are wanted by dangerous man who wants Bruno.

The locations featured in the game included a carnival, the worlds largest ball of twine, gator golf, Mount Rushmore, and more. The game is very fun and comedic. You can explore the different locations. For example at the carnival you can talk to different people and ride the rides. As you explore the world you find objects you can keep in an inventory to use later in the game. One object I remember is stealing Jessie James cut off hand from a jar at the carnival which you use later in the game to collect a mood ring lost in the worlds largest ball of twine.

Saturday Morning TV Series Opening Credits

Back when kids had Saturday morning cartoons to watch Sam and Max got their own cartoon series. I was so excited back in 1997 when Sam and Max came on television. I loved the game so much that them making a cartoon series was icing on the cake for me. It was cancelled after one season sadly but at least I have fond memories of waking up early on Saturday mornings to enjoy cartoons like Sam and Max.

A Game Worth Playing

Sam and Max is overall a fun game to play and great for both adults and kids. It has sequel games made in the 2000s for those who enjoy the first. Before it was a computer game, Sam and Max were originally comic book characters. With a cartoon series to watch a well it is a fun group of characters to follow in various forms of media.
